Starting out our Senior Club Championship on Saturday, I hit a nice drive on the first hole.  Then, from just under 90 yards, I hit a wedge to inside 6 inches.  That's the way to start a round of golf!

I didn't have too many good shots on Sunday, but I still managed to scrape together a decent 89.

On Saturday, however, my best shot was on the 11th hole, a long par 3 playing to 198 yards.  I hit a hybrid that leaked out to the right on me, kicked off the side of the green and finished about 15 yards off to the right.  I was a good 6 feet below the level of the green and since the pin was on the right side, I was short-sided.  The ball was sitting up in the rough nicely, so I opened my 58* lob wedge and hit a massive flop onto the green.  The ball landed about 3 feet shy of the hole, hopped once and hit the pin and then rode the flagstick down into the hole for a birdie.

I was able to complete my round (shotgun start) by playing 11 through 14 in even par (birdie - par - bogey - par) which allowed me to post an 87 and be only 1 stroke behind the leader heading into the second day of the tournament.

On Tuesday during our Fourball summer match play event, my shot on our par 3, 4th hole lipped out for a hole in one.  You could see the ball rolling towards the hole and hit the edge of the hole and go left about a foot and a half away.  Closest I've been in a long time.

Playing a Thursday after work round at my home course, I sprayed my 17th hole drive right on to the adjacent 18th hole's fairway. I had 160 yds, somewhat blind shot, over the trees to a middle pin and I ended up smacking the pin dead centre and it ricocheted down wards and left me 3 ft for birdie.  My ball had a decent sized dent in it, but I was still able to roll in my birdie!

First hole at Lanier Golf Club; par 5, 525 yards from the blue tees. I hit a massive drive off the tee, but I laid up well back because of water short and right of the green. I had 85 yards to a back pin; I choked down on my gap wedge and took a full, easy swing. The ball landed in the center of the green; I was expecting it to check up, but instead it kicked forward. I'll let the photo speak for the result.

Played kinda all over the place today, some horrific shots mixed with some solid ones.  Last hole is a par 5 which I hit a decent drive on but the hole was still a couple hundred yards away and uphill.  I thought screw it, gonna grab a 3 iron and experiment... wider than normal stance, took the club back further than normal and... smoked the ball dead straight to about 10 yards from the pin.  Easily the best I've ever hit a 3 off the ground.  It made me realize I'm probably hitting the longer irons (and maybe all irons) wrong so I'm looking forward to tinkering with this some more and seeing what's up.

Yesterday I drove the fringe on two par 4s. With visions of birdies in my head, carded a 4 and 5 respectively.

Ouch!

Played a shotgun tournament yesterday.  When I got to #2 (my 7th hole of the day), I pushed my tee shot slightly right into the rough.  The hole turned a little bit to the right and there was an overhanging tree branch in front of me.  I had about 140 to the hole and it had to carry a hazard.  Behind the green, to the left of the flag, there was a tree.  I told my friend who was in the same cart as me that I was going to hit it over the overhanging branch at that tree beyond the green with a bit of a fade and the wind should hold it up and help the fade turn a bit more.  I managed to hit the exact shot I had called and the ball finished just left and a yard or two long, but left me about 16 feet away.  I couldn't convert the putt for birdie but pulling off the shot exactly how I'd called it was a nice feeling.

Shot of the day, on the 4th hole at Bunker hill GC, a par 3.
Sadly, I was taking my third shot, hoping for a 5. A sand wedge from next to the cart, as seen in the picture, arced through the air, hit the flagstick in the distance about 4 feet up. Ball ran down the stick as if on a rail, right in the hole to make par.
Of course I was playing alone, but a shot of a lifetime to be sure!

approach on a dogleg par 5 - 100 yards to a back flag - a good 15 yard drop in elevation - medium wind from the left

hit my new 54/14 SW aiming just a couple feet left of the pin - clean pick from the short rough - it actually flew like visualized - maybe even better

ball mark was 1 foot short of the flag and the ball stopped about 2 feet to the right of the hole, pin high

On 18, tied with a friend of mine. Duff my 2nd shot into a fairway bunker. Then hit an 8 iron from the bunker 140 yards out to about 25 ft and 2 putt for the win haha

10th hole at my home course is super tough. Par 5, over water twice. Pin was cut two paces on front of green. Hit my third shot with a 60 degree wedge from 72 yards out and landed it three feet from the hole. Controlled aim, trajectory, and spin perfectly! And made the putt for my first birdie ever on that hole. For five seconds my short game looked like a pros!!!!

This was at Indian Creek GC in Dallas. Hole is a par 3, 226 to the pin. A good drive for me is average 215, so I said what the heck I will hit my Driver. Sun was directly in my eyes so I couldn't track the first shot and couldn't see if I had hit the green or not. Hit a provisional just in case. Drive up to the green looking all over for a ball. As I come around the back of the green, fully expecting to park and walk all over looking or drop, I see it laying there on the green about 45ft from the pin. Of course I couldn't convert the birdie and ended up with par. Still great shot for me!

    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
    • Day 204 (22 Nov 24) - Weekly men’s group round today.  Temps in the upper 40’s, WNW winds 5-15mph - was the old man in the foursome (next youngest is my junior by 10yrs) - held my own against them.  Iron play getting more consistent -seeing predictable ball flights and distances. While the consistency coming around still had sone solid negatives as I had two dbls and one triple. On the plus side - eight pars and one birdie.
    • I don't think anyone will really care.   It's your call.  Just be consistent.
    • I agree, until we are watching the 18th hole in the dark or waiting for the champion to finish and it's been 5+ hours
    • Question for the group. The course I normally play at has 27 holes - 3 9s that they use to for 18 in the various combinations. Is it okay to declare* if I’m playing front or back when I play 9 on this course? I’m figuring I need to declare before I play a shot. *meaning just say to myself that this is the back 9. Curious what people think. Of course, my only holes left are 13 and 17, so I’m going to declare the back 9 for the rest of the year. Probably only one or two more rounds though.
