Quote

Nike launched a serious new ad campaign on Sunday touching on themes of race, equality and discrimination, and Tiger Woods appears to be along for the ride.

He's largely avoided being political int he past, but he has commented on race a little in the past.

He's not in that commercial, from what I could see, but he's tweeting about it.

I doubt money has anything to do with it.  I guarantee his recent winnings (or lack thereof) have anything to do with it.

I'm a little surprised only because I got the impression that Tiger had actively avoided similar things in the past, but this is also relatively non-controversial.  It's not like he's boycotting golf clubs for their policies or anything.

I think we'll start seeing more of this kind of stuff from Tiger as he moves into "Phase 2" of his career. Not to a huge extent like we see from other athletes but I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes more active with these issues in ads, events or his new business.

From what his father said early in Tiger's career, it seems like he expected Tiger to be more vocal or more of a catalyst for change as he got older. Tiger does do a lot of good work with his foundation but his father's "prediction" hasn't really panned out yet (yes I know he's only 41).

Nike will pay Tiger until the sun explodes, my dude. He, as a person, is still one of the top brands on the planet.

On the back of that: Tiger has "**** you" money. If he really disagreed with Nike's position or their decision to run ads of the type, he could easily take his near-billion dollar estate and go home.

I agree.  Let's remember that Tiger molded his PR and commentary after Michael Jordan (both Nike, so no surprise.)  Jordan was famous for not making any sort of controversial or political comments during his playing career.  A quote that is attributed to him (but not confirmed) was "Republicans buy sneakers, too."  Tiger has made his multi, multi-millions so he can be a little more free to do things like this if he chooses.

I'm fine with this.  Athletes are free, like any other American, to publicly endorse or support whatever cause they want.  We are also free to embrace those endorsements or dismiss them.

I can't get past the fact that he golfed with Trump between the election and inauguration.  I don't want to make this political but how much weight does this (already pretty trivial) gesture carry if he's willing to golf with someone (anyone) who has been so public with their prejudices?

I like the general message, and I like that Tiger supports it.

However, if the message was more universal, I think it could be more meaningful for the "rest of us".

The main message also needs some clarification as well.

At face value, the first thing I think is if you can imagine Steven Hawking throwing the winning touchdown at the Super Bowl, or Tom Brady solving the Grand Unification Theory? That doesn't make any sense? :hmm:

OTOH, maybe I'm overthinking it, but that's because I'm an engineer and not a Liberal Arts person?

He's a golfer, that's what keeps us (golfers) together. I'd certainly enjoy playing a round with anyone of any persuasion. . .

Tiger is free to do and say whatever he wants...

That said, I think/hope he's smart enough to not let himself become the pawn that Lebron et al have become for the Soros divide and conquer propaganda machine.

Well, he did play a round with Obama and visited him in the White house multiple times.  Perhaps he's just sticking to his new mantra...giving each side EQUAL time.  :-)

I know it's more comforting to assume that there is some sort of hand behind the movements of the world, but unfortunately, there isn't.

But I totally get it. It feels nice to have an enemy.

Or maybe, just maybe, he knows the guy well enough through his personal dealings with him that he doesn't believe that Trump is the monster that other people think he is? My Aunt is a pretty good judge of character and has had some interactions with Trump in the past, and she likes him just fine. I don't see any problem with Tiger being a part of this advertising and/or him being on good terms with Trump.

Last I  heard was that he's worth approx. 700 million. They estimate he will be the 1st billionaire golfer. Plus he is still being payed by his sponsors. I seriously doubt it's about money. Politics doesn't belong on a golf forum.

As tight a line as I'm asking people to walk here, make sure the discussion involves Tiger and not general politics.

So… more GOATs and less "sheep."

    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
    • I would guess putting grooves in it might make it non-conforming. I am not sure how stringent the USGA is on restoring golf clubs.
    • If PT doesn't work, then all other options (shots) are just temporary bandages of the pain. You may do more damage. Pain is the bodies way of telling you to STOP. Once you get rid of that, you are just now using an already damaged body part and put more stress and strain on it.
