Hey everyone, a friend and I are planning on making a sunday trip to the final round of the Travelers in a couple weeks.  Since it's an easy enough drive (a little over 3 hours for us) and the field looks packed with top players we're excited.  Has anyone gone to this event before?  Just looking to discuss the tournament, best places to watch the action, good vantage points etc, also if anyone knows of a good place to catch a bite after the tournament before we drive home we'd appreciate the advice and suggestions.

Jim "Mr 58" Furyk just shot up my list of favorite golfers.  (Someday, that list will have something to do with golfing ability.)

(I assume this photo was taken at the Traveler's... the PGA Tour's Facebook feed didn't specify)

Unusually absurd field this week with Rory, Day, Justin Thomas, and Jordan Spieth all deciding to play in it this year. Thomas almost won last year and Day's played in it three times, but it'll be tourney debuts for Rory and Spieth. Should be interesting.

Big names... thing these guys are going to start grouping starts...They need to play "X" amount of tours. every year and they also want long breaks.. 3 or 4, and then a month off, etc... Money is no longer a reason to play for most of them and it is about the Majors... Win a major, set for life... Finish 40th every week and get no exposure, you will be playing for a long time to pay the bills..

Look at the money these 20 years old have vs guys that have been on the tour for 20 years... Absurd...

Good thing someone created another thread for this tournament, mine was getting loney lol ☹️

I've got tickets and am going to the final round, super stoked.  Haven't been to a Tour event since The BC Open in 2005.  Now watch Speith and Rory miss the cut so I don't get to see them lol.

If you're heading back on I-84, Nardelli's Grinder Shoppe or Frankie's Hot Dogs are my favorite spots to grab a quick meal.  Both spots are in Waterbury just off the highway.

If time is no issue, I'd head back up toward Hartford and go to Carbone's.  Diamond in the rough as it's in a tough area of the city, but just throw the parking lot attendant $20 and you're good :-D...well worth it because the food is fantastic.

Anytime...wish I could help you with the course but I've never been there.  I'll be spending Saturday night in Portland, CT (next town over from Cromwell) after playing a scramble, so may try to snag Sunday tickets if the big boys are in it.  I'm right there with you hoping they play well!

Ted's Restaurant. There's one right in Cromwell and then there's the original location down the street in Meriden. They're famous for steamed cheeseburgers, which you wouldn't think are good but are some of the best burgers I've ever had. If you're looking for a little local place, that's the one spot I'd absolutely check out.

The Cromwell Diner is also quite good. It's not a tiny little rail cart diner, but it's the best diner in CT that I've been too.

Never heard of Ted's, but I'm sold and know where I'll be eating Saturday night...thanks for sharing that.

On another (random) note, a longtime baseball teammate/friend of mine was invited by Travelers to play in the Pro-Am on Wednesday.  He played with Russel Knox, but also had a good picture with Spieth afterward...jealousy meter went through the roof seeing that on Facebook haha.  He plays off 2 so I'm sure he had a respectable showing! Just a cool thing to see and thought I'd share.

I see a name at -2 that I haven't seen in years....Hunter Mahan. What in the name of golf has happened to that guy? Tim Clark is another name that has vanished off the face of the planet.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
