This was posited in the strategy thread with him too, and I just don't buy it.  I get that it is easy to say that he had to have not been trying to win because nobody could be that dumb, but if you're going to do that, then you have to keep going.

Why would he do that?  Why would he not be trying to win?  Look at what he (didn't) have to gain by not trying to win and I think you'll see what I mean.  Here's my post from that thread:

It's much easier than that ... it's an Occam's Razor situation.  PGA Tour players are insanely talented but not always too bright.  They do things like lay up to their favorite yardages instead of getting closer to the hole, they pull the flag out unnecessarily when off the green, and a perfect example because Holmes does it ... they plumb bob their putts.

Make no mistake, Holmes was trying to win the tournament ... he just made a really, really dumb decision.

Bottom line:  It's a lot easier for me to buy that he is dumb than it is for me to believe that a guy who makes 7 figures every year and is sponsored by a private jet timeshare company didn't want to potentially "lose" 30 or 60k by risking going after an extra 300k or 900k and a trophy.

I just think that he's not so stupid as to think he has a better chance of holing out from 100 yards than he does hitting the green and making a putt. I could be wrong, but he'd have to be monumentally stupid to think his odds are better with holing out his wedge shot.

But don’t you think the alternative is even more idiotic?  The idea that a millionaire really wanted to protect a few thousand dollars?

Question - let's say he really was trying to ice Noren, and Noren realized it. Could Noren just have played ahead and started walking to the green and left JB standing in the middle of the fairway with his thumb up his arse?

I'm always impressed with how well Touring pros can play during really slow rounds. I can't ever seem to find a rhythm when it is slow.

That's a good point. And I'm surprised that I don't see them on their phones playing Candy Crush or posting on The SandTrap during waits. It would be very difficult for me.

It is not as idiotic as it sounds. There are a lot of people who are misers by nature. Heck, there have been and actually are, even today, millionaire and billionaire misers who will look to save every penny. It is eminently possible that he was aiming to play safe because you can't realistically hole out with a wedge from 100 yards or so. Not when you don't read the green and know where to land it specifically. JB is an idiot

If that had been me in one of my tournaments, I'd have absolutely played my shot and headed out.  If he didn't like it, well I could always go with the one finger salute.  But then my tournament club actually has a pace of play policy, and we actually enforce it with penalty strokes.  That being the case, I'd be justified in trying to avoid being penalized for my fellow competitor's folly.

Either way, that response is just  There aren't many people out there that enjoy 6 hour rounds of golf. And for Jason, that's got to be a 10+ hour workday for him, with his warm up, work out, media obligations, and any other practice he wants to get in on top of the round of golf. That would get old quickly.
