We all have seen or played with people we would describe as "that guy" who draws attention to himself in a variety of ways on the course.  I thought I had seen most every tactic or thing somebody could do to attract attention on the golf course.  Saturday, I think I witnessed the most "look at me" thing I have ever seen on a golf course.

Played with a guy that at first I thought was using one of those poker chip markers that are so popular these days.  It was about the fourth hole that I realized it was an ACTUAL THOUSAND dollar poker chip from the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Wondering what others here would describe as their most "look at me" thing they have seen when playing golf either by a stranger or somebody they knew.

That's a hard one to beat, especially when I consider how often I lose ball markers.

I guess it was one of the guys I joined up with at a local muni.  He was tall and dressed like a "Tour Pro" as opposed to the rest of us muni schlubs.  He spoke in a loud voice and was very profane.  His bag was a staff bag with his name on it.  As he walked to the tips, everyone watched with anticipation, this was going to be impressive.

Duck hooked it into the trees.  Probably shot 90 with generous self-granted gimmee's and several do- overs; "That guy dropped the flag as I was in my back swing!!"  Fortunately I was walking so I could avoid all the whining and excuses.

Probably the tip off was his staff bag was ... Top Flite.  😉

I have to go with my latest round, played this past Sunday.

Long par 5, dead straight, wide open.

I said to my partner "I'm gonna get every bit of this next one." and promptly topped it for a grand total of 40 yards.

Always remember, the same country that invented golf and called it a game, invented bag pipes and called it music.

Ha ha! I've seen these electric "push" carts regularly here in San Diego.

I always wear pants, not sure why that's considered "look at me"

Just my opinion but it may be because it's how the pros dress.  It's got be pretty brutal to wear pants in summer heat so you don't see many recreational players wearing pants.

Never really bothers me to be honest. Most of the new golf style pants are light weight and breathable enough that they are comfortable in the heat. I have never be much of one for shorts, even when I was young. Given that I have had a foot brace for a medical condition since I was 18, it just reinforced that.

Not sure if the intent was "look at me," but I recall back in the 70s I was playing at an air force base golf course in Florida, and one summer several older guys wore hats with 18-inch, bright, multi-color umbrellas attached, I guess to avoid sunburn on the back of neck and top of the ears. It was often an entire foursome, and you could seem them from three holes away. The goofiest thing I ever saw. This was long before EBay, so I have no idea where they bought them.

What's in the bag:
Driver: TaylorMade Rocketballz (non-adjustable), 10.5 degrees, stock graphite shaft R flex
Hybrids: Kasco, 17 and 25 degrees, stock graphite shafts
Irons: Golfsmith Tour Cavity Forged, 4-PW, graphite shafts R, 2 degrees upright
Wedges: TaylorMade Black Oxide, 52, 56, and 60 degrees, graphite shafts
Putter: Rife Barbados w/SuperStroke grip
Ball: Bridgestone RXS

Ditto for me.  I always wear pants to keep the sun off of my legs.  I hate greasy sun tan lotions so I prefer wear pants over putting on a greasy sun tan lotion.

The best (or the worst) "look at me guy" was a guy I played with about 7 years ago.  He dressed like Payne Steward.  Unfortunately, his play resembled nothing like Payne.  I think he shot over 100.

My first response would be "bikinis in back yards", 'butt' I am sure that's not what the OP is looking for.

Golf wise it's the guy who shows up with  couple of grand worth of equipment, and dressed to the nines from head to toe. The one who talks a great game. Who, for some reason, has lost his "A" game for the day. The one who can't easily break 100.

I see these guys quite often in my golf travels. They are very entertaining for the most part.

We were having a discussion the other day at the 19th about the various stereotypes we see on the golf course. Talking about it we were suprised at  how many we could come up with.

Only because a lot of recreational golfers don't realise that wearing long pants made out of the correct material keeps you cooler and more comfortable. I play high 30 degrees C weather in long pants and have never for a moment wished I was wearing shorts.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
