Theoretically, a player can have a higher world ranking than another player, yet have been beaten more times than not by that other player (finish #20 in a tourney to the other player's #7, etc.).

Think about it.  If that's happened, which stat matters most?  Player A has a higher world ranking? Or that Player A is beaten by Player B more often than not?

I'm too lazy to go thru results to find out if it's happened.

It may not be a big deal to you, but to deny that it's a big deal is just ignorant. It is a big deal in general.

The only big deal thats going to happen in golf from now until the masters is when Tiger shows up at Torrey Pines to officially begin the 2019 tour season. 😂

Im sure the PGA, NBC or whomever else with a financial stake in it wants us to believe its a big deal. Some do, i think its silly.  It Its an exhibition that networks blew up into some kind jingoistic competition over the decades that we're supposed to care about. Or maybe its like the olympics in that people only care about it while its happening. I think Tiger or Mickelson said this once, but tell me anyones Ryder cup record without googling it. You cant. But i bet you can say how many tournaments they've won. Its a fun event thats done every couple years, but important its not in the overall world of sport and golf.

Umm, my experience living in a country that is involved, is that it's akin to football world cup in terms of relative importance. It gets attention from those that don't even watch majors.

Well England also thinks cricket is important so....

You're not getting it.

In the world of golf, it is a big deal.

That's not an opinion. It's not something the media "tries" to make you "believe." It's a fact.

Tell that to the thousands of people who were chanting USA as Tiger and Rory were near the 18th green on Sunday. They know what is coming up next week. They are primed to be rooting for USA against Europe.

So, don't try to gloss over the Ryder Cup's importance. It matters to a lot of people. It's a pretty big deal.

The reason people don't remember individual stats is because it's a team format. People remember which team won. So, you are not even comparing apples to apples here.

Along with a couple of billion from the other countries that play it. Remind me how many nations compete in the world series of baseball?

All the cool ones.

I still question the Ian Poulter pick. I know he's got the Poultergeist nickname and all that, but it really didn't work out well for him back in 2014. He was winless, 0-1-2, and only Stephan Gallacher and Thomas Bjorn scored fewer points than he did.

I think people have either gotten used to his antics or he's forgotten how to replicate his past success. The US could've picked someone like Keegan Bradley if they wanted a pick who would get inside the opponent's heads, but I think they made the smarter choice of going with players who have been playing well.

Talking above about the statistical likelihood of who would have a hot week vs not.......I doubt the presence of a guy that's gotten hot once in the last decade would get into any of the Euro's heads.

Phil was always my ???? pick for this year.  I hope he has one more at least left.

You do know Furyk picked Phil Mickelson? Not sure if he fits into the "playing well" category.

Personally I love the Ryder Cup, I look forward to it with great anticipation. I sure wish I didn't have to wake up at 2:00am to watch it though...

Just look at the picks vs the world rankings today.  Not too bad really other than 3 people don't line up......the coaches do know what they are doing, considering the level of talent in the top of the game, the system does pretty decent for the automatic picks too.  not surprising

  • To pick Phil we had to pass over Xander and Patrick Cantley
  • Points to Thunderbear, but net result they miss Fitz and Rafa,
  • To pick Poulter passed over Rafa

What do you all think about the possible Tiger/Phil pairing? I’m not a big fan of that idea. I think Tiger would be good with BD. Obviously Tiger and Phil are very competitive but I’m thinking there’s too much going on with that pairing and it would distract both of them from playing their best.

NOT ME, I don't need no stinkin' sleep!

I'll DVR it and when I get up at 2:00 I will get to fast forward through all the commercials. I am not staying up all night to watch commercials!

I'm talking about how people say Poulter will be a factor because he gets into people's head with his antics. Keegan Bradley has a reputation for pissing off his playing partners similarly with his behavior on the course. I don't believe either is a solid pick in terms of the golf they'd play.

As far as Phil goes, he had good finishes in the Northern Trust and Dell, which is likely why he got picked since he had those good weeks plus his WGC win earlier this year.

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
