Masters Bush League Bullying - Everything I hate about Augusta

I love the slow play penalty . .I wish they would assess strokes every week.  But they don't.  In fact, they almost never do.  So my only issue with this ruling is that it seems unfair to single out this amatuer - who is not even a tour player - to assess the first penalty stroke for slow play in 17 years (or something like that).  So he was put on the clock and didn't get back into position.  Am I to understand that he is the first player not to do so in 17 years?  Love the penalty - disagree with this particular application.  If this had been one of the tours many chronically slow players . .or any regular tour member, for that matter, I would not have any question about it.  Now that they have broken the seal on the stroke penalty . .this better not be the only time we see it this year.  I expect to see this penalty weekly . or I am definitely calling BS on the whole thing . .and I know the folks at The Masters are really nervous about what my opinion is, lol.

You can say what you want about playing a 6 hour round, that doesn't matter. What matters is that he constantly took over 40 seconds per shot, and was routinely warned to speed it up. If Tiger's group was held up because of the groups ahead of him. Hmm i wonder what group was ahead of him holding up everyone behind them, oh wait the one with the 14 year old. Why penalize the groups behind this kid because was holding everyone up. Sorry, but if you know anything about supply chain, the fastest a group in a Queue can go is the slowest group at the front of the pack. No matter how fast Tiger can go, he can't play ahead of this kid. So stop Bitching about how long tiger took to play 18 holes, he wasn't taking over 40 seconds a shot. They don't count how long it takes you to walk to your ball or how long you wait for a green to clear up. Its how long it takes him, for when he is able to proceed with his shot, to play his shot. That is slow play, that is all he can control, that was what he was penalized for. Even Ben Crane doesn't get hit with slow play.

Well, first, whether he is a "kid" or not is irrelevant. From what I heard in the media, it was not only about slow play. He was warned 3 times and was only given the penalty because  his group was out of position due to his slow play.

He didn't get singled out because he was 14, he didn't get singled out because he was Chinese.  He got penalized because he refused to act on the MULTIPLE slow play warnings he received and speed up his pace of play.  I don't know why that is so difficult for some to comprehend.

Disagree. You don't pick and choose when to enforce rules. He was backing up the entire golf course behind him. And it wasn't close to being bigger than the Tiger penalty.

What would be so "enormously detrimental" to the greater good of golf if a 14 year old kid from China got penalized for slow play and didn't make the cut?  He chose to ignore the multiple warnings and forced others in his group to run to their ball to make up for his slow play.

It doesn't matter that he's a kid or from China, if you're warned multiple times about slow play, you pick up the pace or risk a penalty.  He was defiant and got hit with the penalty.

No way was this or would it have been a bigger story than Tiger.  Once the Tiger story broke no one even mentioned Guan and after his 77 today he's likely not going to be brought up tomorrow.

The reason this rule is so rarely enforced is because most people follow it... The rule is enforced beyond this guy, I've seen it enforced several other times this year alone. He was warned 3 times, he ignored the rules to benefit himself, he took a penalty. This has nothing to do with him being Chinese (there are a lot of nationalities out there), this has nothing to do with his age (I think we all agree that a 14 year old playing is good for golf), this is not them setting an example... This is the rules of the game being enforced. As mentioned, if bubba would have incurred this penalty, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Kid had unusual circumstances. Shorter hitter, first to hit, most likely hybrids and fairway woods,  clock starts on the first hitter usually and that was usually him.  Caddy not necessarily fully in tune w/ the kid's way of playing and the club distances,  very windy day when the kid was on the course, fast greens.  Kid isn't conditioned to a course found to be difficult/challenging, even to greats like Lefty - no big deal.  Looks like he's kicking PGA Champ Keegan Bradley's ass even with the penalty. He has yet to three-putt a single green during this tournament.

I'm a fan of the kid now - and hope that he becomes the world's number one some day.

Everyone has unusual circumstances... not going to treat him differently because he's a kid.

Be interesting to see Guan paired up with Rory Sabbatini;-). Seriously though, it would be good to see more slow play penalties called on some of these guys. I love Snedeker's game, knows what he wants to do, steps in there and gets on with it. I wish more of them would play that way.
