A good video.  The USGA and/or PGA need to create some public service videos aired on golf telecasts. The "While We're Young" campaign was pointless fluff.

I doubt they’d accomplish anything. Slow players often don’t think and/or care that they’re slow.

The only way this video would have been better is if Seven-Time ADAA All-Star Legend Patches O’Houlihan had been the narrator.😜

We could show slow players this video, but they already don’t think they’re slow.

Part of the problem, in my opinion, is that too many people watch PGA Tour golf and think everyone plays at that pace and, if they do it on TV, then it must be OK. I also think they could have improved their pace of play in the video if they'd used GPS instead of the lasers. When I get to my ball I already know how many yards are left. By the time she finds her laser, gets the yardage, returns the laser to the bag and takes her practice swings my ball is already on its way. I also think it would have been faster if they'd left the pin in the hole but maybe the video was made before the rule change. I like a fast pace of play but I try not to get too miffed when the pace slows down. Being retired helps keep me cool!

I am being hypothetical here, as I have no stats to back this up. Humor me.

Let's say that 60% of all golfers are considered fast pace players. Let's also say that 35% of all golfers are considered average pace players. Average being  4+/- hours for 18 holes. That leaves the last 5% of all golfers to be  considered slow players.

Now lets say 20% of those golfers considered average pace of play players are actually considered slow by all the faster paced players. That might mean 25% of all golfers are considered slow paced players. I know, the math doesn't work out, but just saying......

Based on all that mbs stat nonsense, if a course was to get rid of 25% of it's revenue, (slow players) could it stay open? How many golfers could afford the higher green fees being charged to make up for the lost revenue?

Also of that remaining 75% of those left over players who are average to faster players, how many of them would now be considered slower players by the faster crowd?  Would this start the whole vicious circle of slow play all over again?

I don't care for slow play any more than anyone else. When it happens I just deal with it. However, slower golfers do serve a purpose. They help to keep green fees lower, which keeps more golfers paying to play, buying equipment, which in the long run, is good for the game of golf.

An interesting take on the issue.  I wonder how many potential and current players stay away from the game because of the 25% or so of slow players? Like you, I don't think we can afford to lose the marginally slow players from the game; we just need most of them to pick up the pace a bit.  The tortises can stay home if they won't change.

Had someone in the 4 ball group in front have a go at me today.

I was playing single and in a cart (wife was caddying and driving the cart).

I'd caught them up and was behind them waiting on 3 consecutive holes.  When I say they were slow, they were slow.  I'd just got to a 210yard par 3 and on that hole the group behind also joined me at the tee box waiting for the group in front of me to finish on the green.  These guys in front were taking about 2 minutes per chip/putt.  I waited on the par 3 tee for over 15 minutes.  So they finished, I hit my shot, chipped up, 2 putted for a bogey. Walked to the next tee.  They had only just finished their drives and were walking 50 yards up the fairway, so I just stay in the cart and wait.

One of them turns around to me and says (aggressively)... "move on to the next hole and stop putting pressure on us".  i.e. not play through, but miss the hole and go to the next one! I had neither motioned, signalled or done anything other than wait patiently.  I was actually ok with waiting.  Couldn't believe it.  I just glared at the guy and didn't say anything, just went back to waiting, joined again by the group behind.

I think one of the other members of the group ahead must have said something to the guy because they let me play through on the next tee.

I do like to play fast - 2- 2 1/4 hrs in a cart is plenty of time for 18 holes. But at the same time if it takes longer because of waiting, I'm fine with that.  I must admit, I've never has anyone tell me to miss a hole out on a course because of quick play! Especially when the group in front were holding up not jus me but another 4 ball behind me.  I guess some golfers just don't consider others.  If I feel like I am holding up anyone behind me for even a couple of minutes, I always let them play through, especially if there are less players in their group.

Yes, they are. Now what? C'mon, if you're playing in 4.5 hrs and there's nobody in front of you, YOU ARE SLOW.

This is why I have no use for you people that say 4.5 hrs. is "deathly slow". Yeah, of course if I'm by myself I can finish 18 holes in 2 1/2 hrs. Were talking about the general population of golfers who play in 4-41/2 hrs. and you're calling them "slow". 5-6 hr. rounds are slow. 4 hrs. is "average". 4 1/2 hrs. is "above average" If that's to slow for you then quit the game or quit bitching.

and while we waited on every single shot, we still played in 3:20.  Slowish by our admittedly fast standards, but if 12 guys, all over 70, none of whom were likely to have broken 90, can get around in that kind of time, there’s absolutely no reason anyone else can’t!

While there is no reason I can't play in 3:20, I prefer not to.    If i'm out on a Saturday with a group of friends, we like to keep a relaxed slow environment.   typically that means 3:50 to 4 hours.

an afternoon weekday round, however, is another story.  I usually just play with 1 other person and 3:30 or more only happens if we get stuck behind someone and we're not able to quickly play through.

And that, boys and girls, is why we have pace of play issues...

I accept that the "average-above average" pace is 4-4 1/2 hrs. Even though if I was playing with 3 others that played similar to me we could play as a (4) in 3 hrs. easy. I don't begrudge someone, tell them they're slow, sit there on every shot behind them with my hands on my hips, or the second there foot leaves the green hit my shot to prove a point, because there pace is 4 hrs. instead of 3.

They need to do another video with carts (or "buggies").

I was thinking the same thing.  Immediately in the video, "walking towards your ball".  Not many that I play with do that from the tee box anymore.  We are all just OLD.  The video has a bunch of common sense that everyone should know.

Oh...and the gal who was slow in her pre-shot routine (red cap/black outfit), she needs to get a different golf bag.  She struggles to get her club(s) in and out of it.  😃
