I haven't been able to play golf for a couple of years due to physical infirmities.  I probably won't ever be able to play full blown golf again.  But I still get the itch.  I'm pretty sure I could handle pitch and putt since the stroke is much gentler.  Unfortunately we have no pitch and putt course anywhere near.

So I'm thinking of doing my own version.  I'd go out with my son-in-law to a local course and pay the full regular greens fee.  But I would just ride along with him until we got to within 50-75 yards.  Then I would drop a ball and play the rest of the hole in the normal manner.

So my question is, if you saw someone doing this would it bother, irritate, or annoy you?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

No, not at all. You paid your fees to be on the course. How you play the course is up to you. It's not carved in stone you have to play from tee to green.

You are out there to have fun.

In fact my wife and I do the same thing. She just chips pitches, &  putts. She drops a ball some where, and what ever par is for that hole, that's her par from where she drops the ball.

I even do the same with my Granddaughters when they want to go, and "hang with G-PA"  for a while. .

Not a problem at all. If anything people behind you would see you’re actually playing faster probably. Do as you please @turtleback. As long as you’re enjoying yourself and you paid your fees, not causing undue delay...anyone opposed can well....you know what I’d say....

As long as you didn’t slow down the group you’re playing with, it wouldn’t bother me at all.

But, sadly, I don’t see how it couldn’t slow them down....

He’s not hitting tee shots or approach shots. How do you figure it’d slow down the group?

You’re basically adding an extra approach shot to every par-4 and par-3.   As if someone duffed their first approach shot.

Probably not an enormous difference.  Probably quicker than adding another “full course” guy to the group too.  Unfortunately, a group following won’t understand that....

But he’s not an ‘addition’ to a 4 ball for example. He pays his green fees and his group is played as a 4 ball yet one player isn’t hitting any tee shots or approach shots. So it’s not a 3 ball with an expected 3 ball pace + an additional ‘1/2 player’, it’s a 4 ball - 1/2 player.

I can't imagine this being a problem, by only playing from that far out you it barely slows down that one person, so you should be well ahead of any groups behind. If they said anything you could show them that you paid and that you weren't playing for free.

Again long as it doesn’t slow things up I’m fine with it.

But when everybody else is driving up to the Green and he’s dropping the ball 100 yards out…

and btw, @turtleback, good to hear that you’re finally back...at least partially!

It could slow down a bit on a par3. On  a par4 and 5, you would be faster then a normal 4 ball. And a lot faster then a 3ball or 2ball.

So, no problem, maybe a bit strange and some people in the flight behind you might get irritated because they don’t get what was happening.

All good to me.

@turtleback is an experienced player so there would be no pace of play issues.  It is safe to say that he could join any of our groups with no issues.

Play on!

I don’t think it would slow anybody down. I had to have arm surgery last winter and couldn’t take a full swing for almost 5 months but I would do the same thing. I’d go out with my usual group and would chip and putt when they got near the green. We never held anybody up and we never had any complaints.

I say go for it, no reason they shouldn't let you play that way. It really isn't that different then the way I know may folks get their kids starting to play...have them hit shots from somewhere from 75-150 yards depending on the kids game.

Again, as long as it doesn't affect pace of play, who cares what someone thinks if you start 100 yards out. It really doesn't make the group play slower than if you were hitting drives & full approach shots.

on a side note: my brother and I are trying to convince my Dad (88) to ride along with us for 9 holes. He doesn't get outside that much and he does struggle to walk. He used to play, but probably hasn't in 20 years or more. We are hoping that if we can get him out once that maybe we can convince him to hit a few putts. It would be a local muni course, at a time that with few players on the course. Hoping he could get a little golf therapy

Players play, tough players win!

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
