Yep.  That happened yesterday.  In a tournament.  

I hit nine greens in regulation yesterday.  

Bogey - Par - Par - Double - Bogey - Par - Par - Double - Bogey

The longest putt I made all day was two feet.  Not a single hole where I had just one putt.  

Yes... those doubles were a pair of four-putts.  

The putter almost found the bottom of a lake yesterday.

It was just a bad day.  I haven't played or practiced much recently.  I went into the day focusing on my irons and it helped get me back on track after my previous round.  I hit a bunch of greens.  I just had no touch on the greens.  

On one hole, I had 55 feet for birdie.  I just wanted to get the ball within 3-4 feet.  I blasted it 15 feet past and it resulted in a four-putt when I hit the collar of the green with my putter coming back.  

On another, I had 33 feet for birdie and I left it 12 feet short.  It was uphill and I just didn't hit the putt.  

I've been keeping stats since 2004 on a spreadsheet.  That was the worst putting round for me since I've been keeping stats.  

It just helps to type it out so I can look back on it and laugh later.

I've had days like that.  As frustrating as it is to "give away" shots on the green; letting it get into your head only makes it worse.  After all...you can't have a bad day putting if you don't do better most of the time.

How was the ball striking? I know we love to blame the putter but if you had 40+ feet for birdie multiple times then it may not be your putter's fault. 

I once played with a guy who spent a couple years on TOUR. I was bitching about being the worst putter on the planet when he corrected me and said, "Your putting is fine, Brad Faxon (it was a few years ago) would have had a hard two putting from where you hit it. You want to putt better? Try hitting it in the same area code as the hole."

Harsh, but good advice.

It wasn't bad... but it wasn't great.  For the year, I average 27' from the hole on greens hit in regulation.  Yesterday, I was at 37' from the hole on average.  

Typically... 40' or so is two-putt range unless I've left myself in a difficult spot.  The course we played didn't have crazy greens and I didn't leave myself in bad spots... I just had no feel for the speed on the greens.  

Very true on the advice though.  My game has been an all-around mess for the majority of this year.  I've had a few flashes of my old game pop up here and there where I've posted 80 (+8) and 74 (+10) but... I'm averaging just shy of 93 for the year.  My expectations are based on my game from this time last year instead of the game I've currently got.  

The good thing is the kids are headed back to school next Monday so... I'll be able to get out of my home office more often to practice.  Hopefully I can fix my issues sooner rather than later.

Were your wearing a red shirt?  The guy holding up play in front of us on Sunday was wearing a red shirt.  Three or four putted every green, and I mean every green, no matter how close he was.  So if it was you, pick up the pace!

45 putts would be a good day for me. Of course, that's an exaggeration, but it isn't a very good part of my game. I have recently improved a little by moving the ball back a few inches in my stance. This has stopped me dragging the ball to the left. The problem is that once you have made a few bad putts it gets in your head. Every inch feels like it is a foot, and every foot a mile

My putting is almost as bad as the rest of my game, but there are definitely horror days that happen from time to time.

The guys here will say (and rightly I think) that the mental game is vastly overrated. But missing putts can really turn into a runaway train. Maybe its fast, undulating greens, bad reads, a lousy stroke and by the back nine that hole looks the size of the ball itself.

I don't always count putts during my round, but the highest number I can recall is 42. That often happens away from the slow greens of my home courses. Basically duck out of water.

Hah. Played on Monday. 

 

The first picture shows a par 4 where I hit the green with my tee shot. Managed to 4 putt for a bogey. 

 

The bottom one is tour average putts in relation to distance to the hole. So if you are averaging 2 putts from 40’ you are right there.

I think that for me, leaving that uphill putt way short would be the most annoying one.  Overshooting a very long putt into the fringe, well that is just because the distance is long and not one that gets practiced often.  But the uphill one.  When I do that it just ticks me off.  A moment of focus before you even putt the ball should prevent that form happening.

 

You will kick butt and takes names next time.

My average around 40 feet it´s more like 2.30. 2.0 it´s better than pga average. 

You were +7 on 9 GIR holes from 40 feet. thats´s an average of 2.77 putts. For a 13 handicaper I think it was just a bad day.

Or miss the green completely.  

That always does wonders for my putts per round.  ;-)

      Day 52 (30 Apr 26) - Had planned a solo round, got invited to be part of trio that included a fmr mini tour pro.  Was fun playing back a set of tees and having to stay in my game plan. Both were very engaging and encouraging in the round.  A good day in working through and making smarter shot choices.

      I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.

      Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."

      I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
