Correlation Between Pace of Play and Unpacking Clubs in Parking Lot

I might be onto something.  While on the practice putting green I noticed a guy drive up and unpack his clubs in the adjacent parking lot.  It took him about 20 minutes to accomplish everything... removing clubs, putting on shoes, fussing, fussing and more fussing.  Don't think I would have wanted to play behind that guy.  It made me remember I have a golf friend who does the same thing... 10-15 minutes at his car before navigating to the pro shop.  And he's slow on the course.  (FWIW, I'm about a minute at my car)

Does anyone here think there's a correlation between this type of behavior and pace of play?

Bigger question:  Are some of us just built to be slow?

Slow is slow.  Very few people who move slowly in the normal course of events, speed up elsewhere!

That explains the person in the checkout line at the grocery store... looking for change, using coupons in the extreme, chit-chatting (I do that with the checker if nobody is behind me), asking the checker to go back into the store to replace an item, not being ready when payment is due, etc., etc.

Takes me a couple of minutes to pack everything in the car. I can switch shoes during red lights. Every minute you're in the lot is 2 minutes more in traffic.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

If I put on my golf shoes at home, it takes me like 1 minute to leave my car and start heading to the clubhouse 😉

I played with this lady at my course once, very very nice and a great golfer, but she is slow, as if she is in slow motion. Everything was just a second too slow, even the way she talks. She is in the medical field and I found some online reviews of her and everyone said the same thing: she is SLOW...

There is this group of senior men at my club who plays every single day. They are known to be slow and never lets people play though. I got caught a few times behind them and instead of asking me to play through, they said I am playing too fast. Uh no, I am not fast but you guys are really slow. The problem is they don’t think they are slow...

About getting ready at the car, I have seen a few guys who’d turn up the music and take their sweet time getting ready (changing, putting shoes on, sunblock, comb hair, fix hat/visor, chitchat, listens to more music). I could finish hitting 100 balls at the range and they are still at their car getting ready.

This one doesn't make sense to me. Sometimes I grab my clubs and throw them on a cart and I'm gone in 15 seconds. Other times setting up a push cart, taking a phone call, waiting a little for a friend, etc. it might take me ten minutes from the time I pull in until I'm ready.

I'm always fast on the golf course.

I always allow anyone setting up a Clicgear golf cart an extra 5 minutes.   😄  And I get it if you're waiting for a friend or your tee time's not for 30 minutes.  Unless you like to warm up first.

Probably a big bit of conjecture to say that someone taking their time in one spot is necessarily going to be slow in another.

One of my habits is to get some place stupid early.  After getting to the course an hour early, obviously there is no rush to do anything. Taking my time at the car or in the pro shop helps pace out my warm-up. Ideally, I get to the first tee close to time without having to stand around and get cold waiting.

Speed-wise I do fine, particular when I'm playing worth a crap.

Mcanadians, you may play in my foursome, too.  Just bring your "Worth a Crap" game that day... 😊

Damn. Why didn't I think of that?

That would make this game easy. It would be like cheating.

I do the same. I basically walk out of my house ready to step onto the first tee - shoes on, tee, ball, pitch mark repair tool in my pocket. If I take my pushcart, maybe 2 minutes to leave my car instead of 1 minute.

Five minutes? I pop mine open in < 20 seconds.

Maybe 30 if I have the wheel cover on.

Situational for me, if i have time to kill i'll relax at my car and fuss with my gear a bit. If i have to, i can be on the first tee a couple minuets after i pull in. I hate the later,  so i'm usually early, getting my mind out of home mode and into golf mode.

Bigger question.

Why are you looking at some random guy for 20 minutes in the parking lot?.....I assume you were either really bored or had a very unproductive putting practice session.

I could understand if you saw a woman in the parking lot and were checking her out if she was Hawt or just golf Hawt.😂

Unfortunately there are too many of these old goofs out on the course.

I know you wouldn't do it....but yelling at these old clowns to play faster .....normally has resulted in a positive outcome for me.

This is an interesting topic. I believe that there is a correlation. Somebody who takes half an hour or more unpacking their stuff will take absolutely forever on the course. For me, the time between when I’m getting out of the car and when I’m standing on the first tee is usually less than five minutes. And on the course, the time between when I get to my ball and when the ball is rolling/in the air is 30 seconds or less, again with very few exceptions.

Dagolfer... you seem to be good foursome material as well.  My "speedy" foursome is now up to 5 golfers.

I was on the putting green next to the parking lot.  I'd make a few, miss a few and then look up again... and he was still fussing at his car.

How quick does your 5some play 18?

OMG, that foursome sounds like they are a pain to play behind. I, as a single walker, have played behind very slow groups before, and it quickly drained the energy and fun out of my round. It would be play a shot, wait 5-10 minutes, repeat.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
