I didn't ask because I thought I'd know it. I asked so I could look it up.

Here's the play:

Flying B #9.png

Voila! Fifty yard wide landing area and no tree in your way.

Or just hit something shorter off the tee and hit over the tree.

Plenty of people who aren't tour pros play Pebble Beach... It's not like they plant a cypress tree in the fairway just for U.S. Opens or something.

Pete Dye Golf Course in WV was built on the site of old coal mines. At one point, between holes, you take a ride through an old mine tunnel.

That course...is probably one of the worst golf courses I’ve ever played.

FWIW, here is how I played #9:

Β

πŸ™‚Β Just blow it by the tree in that 10-yard window...easy breezy.

Fun fact: the only time I’ve ever been stung by a bee on a golf course was at Flying B. In the parking lot, of all places.

You guys don’t get it. @BuckeyebowmanΒ can stripe it down the middle directly in line with a 7 yard wide tree....but to the side with 10-20 yard wide spot? Impossible!πŸ€”

I played Greystone Golf Course today.Β  Β They claim their final 3 holes are the some of the most challenging.

Founded in 1992, Greystone Golf Club & Banquet Center is home to the β€œBest Finish in Michigan Golf”. By reclaiming a gravel quarry, course architect Jerry Mathews was able to achieve one of his finest masterpieces.Β  The Quarry holes, (#16, #17, #18), wrap around our 35 acre lake and provide a glorious setting for golf. Tour pure conditioning, rolling hills and spectacular views are waiting for all who choose to play Greystone.Β

The Links Golf Club in Newmarket, England, is built within the confines of an old horse racing track.Β  You have to cross the track to get from the club house to the course and there are a couple of times when you have to cross the track to tee off back into the confines.Β  It is so well constructed that you easily forget the track is there.

The Old Course at Musselburgh Scotland is also built inΒ in and around a horse track.Β  They still run races there, although golf isn't played during race weeks.Β  For those who don't know, Musselburgh shared the Open Championship with St Andrews and Prestwick for a few years.Β  The competition involved 36 holes:Β  Twice around the 18 at St Andrews, 3 times around the 12 holes at Prestwick, or 4 times around the 9 holes at Musselburgh.

I played Pebble once. I did just what you said here. I played a 4-iron off the tee and then went over the tree. Missed the green, chipped on, 2-putt bogey.Β

I regret it.Β

I should have tried to fit the driver to the left of the tree. I'm not saying that's the "right" play. I'm saying I may never play Pebble again. Or by time I do I may be so old I won't have the length any more to reach the tree. I should have taken my chances. Who cares about score. Golf is all about making memories.Β

There's a course in Woodstock, Illinois called Craig Woods. It's a full sized (well, it's par 36 anyway)Β nine hole course directly across the street from another course called Crystal Woods. 25 years ago I used to play this course with my dad and/or some buddies. Back then we played it to "warm up" before playing Crystal Woods. If memory serves it was like 8 or 10 bucks to play it back then.Β

Anyway, the point is as far as I can recall its the only course I've ever seen that has 2 greens for one hole. Hole number 3 is an island green par 3. If you don't want to play the island green you can choose to play the "other" green. It's the only place I've ever seen where people in the same foursome could be playing two different greens on the same hole.Β

And there’s a burger place in the fairway bunker. That is most certainly unique 😜

My home course in Coorg is built on a paddy field.Β  Land crabs are a feature and we get a lot of crab holes on the fairway and in the rough.Β  We are lucky that they don't dig through onto the green.Β  Also, the two 9's are completely divided by a road.

A course in Mysore is built in an existing horse race track.Β  Most of the holes are within the track area.Β  A couple are outside it with one hitting over the track.Β  Races still happen there and practice still goes on, so on certain days and at certain times, horses take precedence over golfers.

By the way, When do you have to declare which green you are playing?
Imagine this scenario: You hit your tee shot into the fairway outΒ passed the Burger and BBQ restaurant. Then while aiming at the par 4 green, you hit it fat and only get about half way to the green. You still have a chance at making a GIR if you then turn and hit it over the water onto the par 5 green.Β

I've played the course about a half dozen times.Β  Β We always play the par 4.Β  Β The course use to be called Fore Lakes and the name is very descriptive.Β  Β  I've never stopped at the burger joint (actually a Google mistake).Β  I believe the bar and grill inside is called Bunker's.Β Β
