Pulled his drive way left, drop out of hazard, that’s two. 250 left from heavy rough with the ball way above his feet and an really uneven stance? That’s a hybrid for Bryson! OB, reload, OB, reload. Nearly OB, a yard from another hazard. That’s SEVEN!! Lob wedge and two putts for a tidy ten. Argued with two rules officials over a straightforward call on the OB as well. 😡🤬😢

I enjoyed that, Bryson is great TV....

Also he gets a nice graphic on the scorecard

A few random comments:

The crew they put out to cover the early morning featured group was terrible.  They were unable to find where shots ended up several times.  There was a shot where Sergio came up short and it was a question of whether he went in the water, but without showing where he ended up they moved to something else and it was 5 minutes before they were back to him playing his next shot and we saw he had stayed dry.  And Christina Kim sounded as giddy as a HS girl and just wouldn't shut up.

I wonder if there will be a pattern of Tiger struggling with early tee times, since it takes a long time for him to get stretched out and get his body ready to play.

The 2 missed short putts early seemed to take the starch out of Tiger's game, although he fought gamely to the end.

I really like Tony Finau but I worry that his new fixation on ball speed is going to take him off track in the long term.

I've always thought there was some "feel" commonality between putting and pool.  With Phil's occasional pause at the back of his putting stroke I was reminded that top pool instructors teach a pause, after drawing the cue back, before stroking.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

It's pretty common knowledge that the longer you are off of the tee, the more of a chance you have of making a better score. Would you say that he was "on track" before? He's 30 and has one PGA win and one web.com win. I think that he needs something to break through and be a top tier player. He is really close, but after watching him choke away so many, I'm convinced he's not there yet. Obviously he's amazing and is within the top 20 on wgr, but he is one of the least winningest players within the top 20.

As a fairly adept pool player, and an above average putter (especially for my handicap range), I would completely agree with this. Visualization of the shot in pool is very important, where the cue ball position post shot matters loads, and there is plenty of physics to calculate. This applies to all of golf, but particularly putting, where making it is always on the table, whereas on any shot outside of 20 yards, you are just trying to get yourself to an area.

Speed, read, and bead, apply to pool as well and you also add strike location (this could be part of read). Proper pace, aim, and stroke are all required to be an effective pool player.

FWIW, I think the commentators on nbcsportsgold got it wrong, too.  (Different from the golf channel broadcast at the same time.)  If I heard them correctly, one of them said that just like a penalty area, any part of the ball over the line makes it in the penalty area or OB.  But for OB, any part of the ball being in bounds makes the ball in bounds. 18.2a(2).

I think BCD was trying to get a ruling that each small metal piece of the fence formed the line, rather than the posts. The ruling was the posts, if I understood it right. So even though part of his ball was course-side of the fence at the place his ball was, it was outside of the line formed by the posts.A985BF57-0760-425C-8B79-1535DF1F4C89.thumb.jpeg.d3c1972bf9727845b677a0dd3d111ada.jpeg

No doubt, but he is in the top 30 in driving distance but pretty woeful in other areas of the game, like scrambling, medium short to short putting, sand game, driving accuracy - all of which seem like more fruitful areas of focus than ball speed.

This is a great explanation, and I think a correct one. You can't blame Bryson for trying to get a ruling that favors him, but the ruling is the ruling and he should take it and not moan.

Fair points. I hope he plays well today and tomorrow, and doesn't crack like he normally does.

Yeah it’s in the definitions. Those little ones don’t even reach the ground.

And I’m not sure the ball is inside that.

Curious here, and replying to you since I'm sure you will know: Does the thickness of the stake dictate OB? That is to say center-line of stake or inside (to course) edge?

The edge on the course side is the line. So no, thickness doesn’t matter.

That's backwards from the way I think (not to say it's wrong). When I see posts, I would think center to center. So rarely is it on that fine line, but it is great to know that it is edge to edge instead. Thank you.

    • No…? When we edit the title of topics, a little note appears.
    • Rush or delay your own pace and you are probably going to suffer in the long run. PGA pro are well oiled machines that work on an specific pace, it's not surprise that if you move them out of their normal routine things are going to go sideways. I normally don't rush shots, but I sometimes delay the trigger if I'm not feeling it. The result is a lack of athleticism, I kind of get a little stiff and I could loose some yards and accuracy.
    • It seems like the title to this thread may have been edited. Super hilarious BTW.
    • Argentina: I read about the 3 or 4 clubs challenge in several countries. Here in Argentina, once a year, on several clubs, "Torneo de Brujas" (The witches tournament) is played. It consist on the same concept, only 4 clubs are allowed but the difference is that only woman can play it. What amaze me is that the winning scores are almost the same as if they were playing with all 14 clubs. Seems like sorcery to me..
