Swing Thought for Weight Shift?

Just a suggestion - use a 1-2-3 count as you shift back and forth. 1-2 being BS and 3 being DS. You can in your head or audibly. As you can prolly tell, it's a tempo related metronomic cue tied to a physical movement. Helps rhythm too.

Over my golf life I've had this problem off and on. 
I've used 2 swing thoughts (not at the same time) that seemed to help me. 

1 - You can try visualizing your finish. Then focus your swing thought on "getting to the finish". That one seems to be the one I go back to and always seems to work for me. I just keep my swing thought as "Get to my finish" and it seems to help a myriad of issues, including weight shift. 

2 - There was a period of time about 10 years ago where I was struggling with this and the swing thought that worked best for me was actually to just move my divot. What I mean by that is make your swing thought something like "Divot after the ball" or "Low point after the ball", in that case focus on making the low point of your swing after hitting the ball. I found that was better actually focusing on weight shift. 

3 - I saw Greg Norman give a presentation one time. He said he's swing thought was always to start his swing with his core. That one never quite worked for me, but I get the idea and you may want to give it a try.

Both of the first 2 have helped me over the years at one point or another. So, go ahead and give 'em a try. If one of them works for you, great. If not, let us know what finally does work for you.

Great thanks.  I think im over doing it for sure.  Will work on these next time at range.

I found this video to be really helpful.  I was doing what he says not to do.

My next question:  Is this footwork and weight shift used for all clubs, lob wedge through driver.  Do you shift weight forward with the driver?  Wouldnt that be unwise as you are supposed to hit up on the ball and not down on it?

Speaking of weight shift.... You've got four holes to go. Your back has started hurting. The back pain is making it difficult to clear your hips and get your weight shifting like you were earlier in the round. Any suggestions on how to make it through the round? You might grit your teeth and get a couple good shots in but I'm open for suggestions. In reality, I'm looking at a string of DBs and maybe a triple.

When my SI joint would act up, I would do a kneeling stretch of my quad and psoas muscle to help relieve the pain. It could help me finish a round.

Care to elaborate about the type of back pain?   Is this something you can feel tighten up as you play?   Pain meds after the first 6 holes?  I'm not a doctor or play one on TV, just throwing out ideas and questions.

The simplest thought to have is this:  take the club back by standing on your post foot...and initiate the down swing by standing on your other.

I don’t know if there is a right/wrong way to learn this but my instructor told me to imagine crushing a peanut shell (imaginary or an actual one) under my left foot to start the weight shift for the downswing. It worked for me but not for my husband. 

For the driver, weightshift is a little different. My instructor had me exaggerate the weight being in the back by putting 70% of my weight in the back foot during setup and backswing, then shift weight towards the middle during the downswing. Again it worked for me but not my husband.

The videos that are posted here on the forum are excellent for weight shift.   it is very important that the practice starts slow and specific.  It's torture to practice slow but to get the feel...

This is for me, but I like the idea of feeling like I am pressing down on something under my left foot. My hips shift pretty good, but I have slight mechanic issues with how I do a weight shift. Since weight shift increases pressure under the lead foot it might beneficial to start there.

Watching the 30 day COVID training series @iacas made I like the feeling of my chest descending down and forward.

I would just do stretches.  Bend over and try and touch my feet with my hands and also putt my hands on my butt and push my hips forward.  Also, so a bit of side stretches, too.

My lower back gets tight. Stretches might really help. I used to sit on the benches and kind of curl over and hug my knees, but the course removed the benches due to COVID. I can't wait for 2020 to be over.

This will sound weird, but I’ve been working on this early shift and movement back by seeing a tidal wave in my mind. Little move off the ball, maximum by P2, then just like a wave curls up and back in the forward direction... I crash forward and down to the ball.

The first day trying this my driver SS went from 96 to 107. Still working on it, so the speed isn’t yet consistent.

Thanks.  I have been putting pressure on my left foot just befor I start downswing, and then moving my hips laterally towards target.  Not sure if that lateral shift is supposed to occur?

    • I’m planning on playing tomorrow, and I may or may not decide to play the front tees, just to do something different. That got me thinking: have you ever played the forward tees at your home course? If so, how was it? What were the major differences between them and the tees you normally play? I’ve played the front tees on a few occasions, all in team practices. We played the back nine from the red tees once my freshman year, and I shot 46. This past season, we played holes 1, 2 and 9 where we played two-man teams, worst shot scramble from the reds. That was one of my favorite things we did during practice. We also did a 6-hole competition, playing the aforementioned loop twice. I shot +3, which was only two off the winning score. In terms of differences, it’s about a thousand-yard difference between the whites and reds (6063 white, 5044 red). Although it doesn’t make a huge difference on a lot of the holes, it will take a club or two off my approach, which is good because I’m usually stronger with the shorter irons. No. 4, Par 5. 345 red compared to 478 white. Although I don’t have to hit over the lake with the tee shot, I would still need to worry about trees on the right, OB left, and a bunker about 220 from the red tee. In a way, it may be a tougher hole from the reds than the whites because of how precise the tee shot has to be. In home matches here, we’ll sometimes play this hole from the reds, as a par 4.  No. 9, Par 5. 372 red compared to 442 white. Dogleg left hole, with a bunker at the corner of the dogleg. You can easily carry that bunker from the red tees, while shorter hitters need a good drive to get past it from the whites. No. 13, Par 4. This one is huge. 300 red compared to 421 white. A very tough par 4 from any tee but the reds. Still no pushover at 300 yards, but you can hit a 200-yard tee shot and it won’t hurt you at all. The same length tee shot from the whites will leave you with a difficult downhill lie for your second shot, so you need at least 220 or 230 from back there. No. 16, Par 5. 465 red compared to 523 white. From the white tees, the hole goes gradually downhill after the bunker on the right, which is 240 out. Most of my drives are a little bit short of that trap. From the reds, I can probably land my tee shot on that slope and get a bit of extra roll, leaving me 220, at most, into the green with a well-struck drive. No. 17, Par 4. Another huge difference. 256 red compared to 355 white. Not a tough hole from any tee box, but the reds make this a definite birdie opportunity, since I can get close to or on the putting surface with my tee shot. Because the hole is a dogleg, it’s probably only 240 or so on a straight line. I’ve driven the green before. No. 18, Par 3. Only 94 red compared to 157 white. This epic finishing hole has you hitting over a lake. It’s a mid or long iron from the back two tees, but only a wedge from the front two tees, meaning it’s an easier shot for me. If I play the reds, I think I could shoot low 80s, maybe high 70s if I have my A-game.
    • In an 18 hole round a guy or gal probably averages 6 to 8 gimme-length putts.  Half of those you can just rake in.  The other half, especially when they're an 18 incher, slick green, left to right... they're gonna read those putts, perhaps from both sides of the hole.  And then there are the practice swings.  And if they make it there's the victory dance!  All time consuming.
    • Seems like a lot.  I would have thought it'd be a quarter of that.

    • interesting opinion. I’ve literally been playing nothing but Prov1/Prov1x for 20 years. I agree, not much has come close to it, although I’ve seen some nice balls released by other manufacturers thats have closed the gap. That’s about all I agree with you about however. Feels like a rock? I guess that’s what is so neat about golf equipment and varying opinions. I’m very impressed with the ball, and like I said, I’ve played nothing but Prov1 for 20 years. I scored really well with the ball at TPC Myrtle Beach and Pawleys plantation again today. The ball is solid. It doesn’t spin as much off the tee, and certainly seems to have  more distance, but green side spin was very good and it has nice softness off the Scotty Cameron and rolls true.  Usually very cynical about balls, but this one caught my attention and the Results have been there. I literally rotated a Prov1, Prov1x and AVX last few rounds and amazed.
