I was griping about Van Rooyen playing in joggers. My son says joggers are part of contemporary fashion. To me they are akin to sweatpants and inappropriate for tour events. Am I an over-the-hill curmudgeon?

New version of sweat pants.     Good for lounging around the house.

I thought "joggers" were people running down the road for "exercise". If you're an "over-the-hill curmudgeon", I must be even closer to under-the-hill than I reckoned! 😄

They aren't my thing.

But the young people seem to like the joggers. They don't bother me, so if they want to wear them, more power to them.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Here’s a close-up of Van Rooyen’s pant legs. The bottoms are elastic like sweatpants.

When I was young, we called those ‘Floods’ and it meant you had outgrown your pants.

Yes! His socks look like they’re having a great party…they should invite the pants down!

Pants on tour are stupid. I'm for anything that exemplifies this and brings us closer to allowing shorts

I wear joggers in the winter and cooler weather.   Modern materials and a non sloppy cut, not baggy sweats.   Lot of pants end up too short because I Have long legs.   Where I play, no one cares if you wear more athletic looking clothes as long as you have a collared shirt or don’t look sloppy.   If not joggers, I do leggings under shorts just to cover my legs in the winter.

I guess I’m old school but to me this is inappropriate attire for a tour professional. You’re right about Snead. Even as a pro, when Sam was struggling he would take off his shoes and play barefoot.

I'm fine with joggers, I think they started to get traction like 5 years ago. I've seen a few well regarded popular teaching pros in my social feeds who regularly wear joggers I dunno, three years ago? It's nice not having the material near your ankles flop around.

The pants I have like that were not called joggers and the legs extend a bit further south. Depending on the material they look similar to golf pants IMO, although the cotton models do look like sweats. I wouldn't were them that short since fire ants may bite my ankles and cause me to destroy a tee marker.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
