DeChambeau benefitted from a rare rules decision that saw rules officials alter a hazard line mid-round. Here's...

You guys see this? I don’t really understand why the paint was across the sprinkler head in the first place. Human error I guess. But I was surprised they erased it and gave BDC relief but Pieters was just SOL.

From what I read, the wind blew the pain first time around, so the red paint was further away form the water than intended, too close to the sprinkler.  Pieters ball on the sprinkler head was touching the red paint, so was in the Penalty Area, ergo no relief.  It was the correct ruling based on the painted line.  Apparently word got back to the Committee, and after a review they determined that it was never their intention to have the line marked the way it was, and so corrected it.  When Bryson's ball ended up there, the decision had already been made, and even though the cans of paint hadn't arrived yet, Bryson was given relief.  Understand that this wouldn't have happened in a stroke play event, but since each match is its own competition, they COULD make the adjustment mid-round.  In the end, Pieters won despite getting a bit screwed, and Bryson was able to take relief as was appropriate given the original intentions of the Committee.

I always forget how much I like watching match play. I do like it. But, they should rename this one to “4 Swings and 6 Commercials “.
Here’s hoping Dennis “Mr Spit” Johnson whups Brooks “Mr Personality” Koepka.

I know it's for TV ratings, keeping the big names alive, but when you lose you should be out.  No second chances.  Gonzaga in March Madness didn't get a second chance...

I like the format, but not a big fan of the course. With the overhead wires, and range netting that can be seen on multiple holes, it’s not very attractive.

It has a few very interesting holes I think, definitely 17 and the par 5 that ends with the bridge in the background

Thanks. It's funny how I see that now but didn't when I posted. I blame it on agedness.

Match play is a different animal. I can’t imagine not having Kisner on the RC team. Scheffler and Kisner….power team right there.

@Vinsk Kisner and Horchel should be on the RC. Both have another gear in match play. In Italy I hope they both are pics or make team.

Both play certain types of courses well. They’re often not like Whistling Straits.

Maybe in Italy though.

Completely agree.  Horschel should have been a captain's pick last year, but the good-ol-boys club kept him out.  I like Kisner, but his lack of (relative) distance negates his strength when the Ryder Cup is played at 7500+ yard courses.

Yes but I don’t believe that the Italian course will be set for distance. Euros advantage is not to bomb it everywhere. He could be a solid piece for us. Steady with the putter. Bethpage I would agree no so much.

Ummm, or he just wasn't a good fit: play-wise, mentality/personality-wise… etc.

The captain's picks last year were:

  • Daniel Berger
  • Harris English
  • Tony Finau
  • Xander Schauffele
  • Scottie Scheffler
  • Jordan Spieth

Who would you have swapped out for Baton Boy?

The U.S. team won in record fashion. The right team was chosen.

Either Harris English, or Daniel Berger.  Horschel has proven his mettle in match play, so there's no argument there.

    • Day 153: putted for a while using the 2 cups drill inside. Working on bead primarily. Contact was really good.
    • Day 8: 12/17/2024 Okay I took my new PPJ swing thought to the range today. I wasn't sure I was quite ready to do so, but I'm glad I did.  When I got it right it was good... really good. When I got it wrong it was a major fail. I hit lots of really ugly ones. But I didn't let that deter me. I stayed committed and focused on the PPJ and I avoided any temptation to go back to what I was doing before just so that I could "look" better at the range. I'm pretty excited about what I saw when I got it right.  I hit the 6 iron mostly (nearly all block work today). I also hit about 6 balls each with the PW, 8I, 5W and Driver. Those had varying degrees of success. I did crack one drive that let me feel and see what the changes will look like once I get fully trained.  Anyway, I'm going to go back to the mirror work for a couple of more days before bringing it back to the range. I do feel like if I can get this right my swing will improve a lot. So I think its worth the effort. I liked the way it looked on GEARs when I get it right, and I like the results I got at the range when I got it right. Now the goal is to work towards getting it right more often.
    • So I think it's that they can't just bend the shaft or hosel to get it to a new lie angle. They adjust that and it changes the weighting, so they have to then adjust all the weights to get it balanced again. I get the impression that it's a bit of an iterative process and they do it all in the US, so they're paying US labor costs to build it and make it work how it's supposed to. Whether you believe in the tech or not, I think that's a true statement.
    • Ah, the old EE in the backswing move. Chest going back and staying down doesn't help.
