Dress Codes: Good or Bad for the Game?

Hopefully not, it's just a way to show a little respect for the game. Here's the problem with all the arguments against golf attire. First, golf attire is specifically designed to be comfortable when you play. I see guys in jeans on the course all the time. Nothing is less conducive to freedom of movement and staying cool than denim. Modern golf shirts and pants stretch and are superb at wicking moisture to keep someone cool. Secondly, I always hear the cost argument that golf attire is too expensive which is ridiculous. If you are a bargain hunter (I am) you can find great stuff for cheap. I don't know what types of stores you have in Sweden, but here places like Costco and SAMS club often have golf shirts and pants. Hell I bought a Greg Norman shirt and pair of shorts at Stein Mart last week cost me $38 for the both of them,

It tend to be quite expensive but few golf courses actually require real golf clothes. 

Never seen any dress code in writing on my golf course heck I tend to be the most properly dressed and I dont care. 

I use them for the comfort and practicality but yeah no 38$ bargains

My club publishes a dress code and provides a yearly reminder. At a resort course near my home, golfers dress as if they just finished changing a tire.

I would change the next word in that sentence to "ugly" which is another reason I seldom show up at places that have codes along that line. I did make an exception Saturday for a tournament I wanted to play, put on the ugly clothes, played, and as soon as it was over, changed to something I like the look of.  

 

Obviously other people have different opinions on what looks good which is a reason different requirements are at different places and it works.

I think that is a bit of a stretch. There are so many options today for golf attire that isn’t ugly. No matter what your taste if you can’t find a polo shirt you like then you just really aren’t trying.

Just wondering what the correlation is between those who think golf attire is bad for the game and those who refuse to wear a mask or vice versa.  It would be interesting to see that data.

Personally, I don't care how others dress on a golf course, but I like to dress in golf attire when I play.  This shows respect to those I am playing with and to the business establishment.  And yes, I do wear a mask - even on a golf course.

Seeing your outfit in your profile pic, I would definitely say our definition of ugly is different. While I would hardly argue on the appeal of someone like John Daly's on course dress, I think in general golf attire is quite good looking and even passes sometimes as dressing "up".  Tiger looks great pretty much all the time, same with most of the elite players on tour. I think you would have a difficult time getting many people to agree with you that the general mode of golf dress is ugly. 

I have to ask though, what do you "like the look of". I need an example.

While I'm sure the correlation is not 1:1 I'd wager there is a strong relationship.  It would come under the broad category of "People Not Wanting to Do What They're Told".  Rebels without a cause.  Raise your hand on this forum if you like wearing a mask.  Nobody does but we realize we're protecting others and helping to bring the pandemic under control.

I think everybody agrees that some kind of dress code is needed.  I doubt that anybody would want to see golfers in a thong.  So the question is, how strict should the dress code be?

How you dress on the golf course is a reflection of your attitude.  I always prefer to play with a group that dresses in golf attire.  

Personally, I also like seeing the pros on TV dressed nicely and hope they never go to shorts.

I won’t say it reflects their attitude. You never know the story behind somebody. I try not to judge. Im not sure how to decide on the strictness. Many people on here have said jeans or cut offs are ok in their area. Some have said that’s not ok where they are from. So i guess there would need to be more of a sliding scale. Something to keep the rebels within acceptable boundaries. As for the mask issue I wear a mask simply because I don’t want to possibly endanger somebody else. I wear it in the clubhouse to pay then take it off when we tee off unless I’m golfing with strangers which is about 1% of the time. I’m not one of the fools protesting about having to wear one but there are bad things that also happen to you when you do wear one all day.

You mean like having to smell your own breath?  😁

(There's almost no reason to have to wear a mask all day.  I do as you do, wear one to go inside the pro shop to pay, then remove it when I'm out and maintain a healthy social distance... I prefer 10-20 feet)

I was referring to people who are working amongst the public. They wear their masks for a prolonged time and that isn’t good.  And yes smelling your own breath is one of the reasons for some people. 🤣🤣

Why isn't it good?  I've read that hospital workers, nurses, doctors, first responders wear masks all day (with a few breaks) and they say it is no problem.  It does not cause CO2 intoxication nor oxygen deficiency.

I don't think you are being honest with yourself when you say you personally don't care how others dress on the golf course, because you say dressing in golf attire shows respect for those you are playing with and the business establishment. You say you like it when you respect the golf course establishment, but you don't care that others disrespect it?

I’ve worn masks, safety glasses, hairnets and protective clothing for full days work only taking them off for breaks. You do what you need to do. I do brush my teeth, so gorilla breath hasn’t been a problem. 😜

Sorry to disappoint you.

I've played with people in jeans and t-shirts.  Did not bother me one bit.  Personally, I don't pay attention to what others do.  I just concentrate on myself.

I don't waste my brain cells thinking about what others are doing.
