And now CBS, too.  http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/17/business/cbs-to-offer-web-subscription-service.html?_r=0

Are the floodgates opening up?

I probably wouldn't pay for CBS.  Really all I want is HBO.  I don't even care about ESPN anymore, which has basically become TMZ now.  Hulu fills in the network shows nicely.

Live sports can be a pain, but one of @nevets88's links to reddit showed me how to fake the NFL into thinking I live abroad so I purchased their online streaming service and can watch all the games.  I live out of market for my hockey team, so my NHL game pass covers that.  Same with baseball.

The only thing I'm missing now are the random college football games.  I'm a ND fan, so I get most of their games over the air on nbc but when two good teams play that I don't follow, I usually miss those.  Gone are the days of flipping back and forth between games on a saturday afternoon.  That, and the baseball playoff games on FOX are the only thing I'm missing these days.  Oh, and that my abc doesn't come in well over the air and I'm not sure what I'm going to do saturday night for ND/FSU.

edit: WatchESPN will have the ND/FSU game, so I"m set there.

Did you check tvfool to see where ABC's and NBC's antennas are? There are also some homemade antennas - aluminum foil and cardboard that are pretty effective.

I only watched the pilot of Boardwalk Empire. I couldn't get into it. I want to try again sometime in the future, but having seen The Wire and The Sopranos and many other similar shows, I'm a little tired of cops and the mob. Is BE in any way different other than the period it's set in? I like Steve Buscemi and the other actors in it are pretty good too.

We'll see. Not sure how good $5 a month for CBS is if you can't watch sports, particularly if more networks start offering stuff like this. Those prices add up. I'm not paying $5 for CBS, $5 for NBC, another $5 for ABC, etc. to still get less content than I want.

It's nice to have the old seasons but I'd just subscribe for one month and binge on NCIS if I liked NCIS. CBS owns Showtime. Perhaps how this does might have some bearing on a streaming package for Showtime.

I am very intrigued with HBO getting away from requiring a cable subscription. It makes me wonder if ESPN will do the same in the future, hopefully.

I think I read in one of the cbs articles that showtime was going to do it as well.

More content will be available via the interwebs. But then ISPs will jack up their prices. I feel like having been and being a cordcutter for now, you timed the lull between when TPTB haven't figured out their pricing model and when they eventually figure out how to stick it to John Q Public and so cordcutters got and are getting a break in terms of lower prices. For now.

I've been trying to find a new show to get into now that a lot of good ones are coming to an end.  I watched the first episode of Peaky Blinders on Netflix last night.  Seems promising.  Have to put up with their accents though.

Did you try turning on the closed captioning? That helps me. I do that for many of the UK shows.

Sci-fi lover here but just can't stomach that show. Remember watching early episodes and they used low-budget puppets and stuff. Seemed so low-rent and hokey, like it was made for pre-teens. Maybe the more recent seasons have better special effects but I can't bring myself to give it a new shot

I only started watching when the series started back up in 2005, from Doctor #9 but I've seen clips from the in the 90s and 80s and it does look hokey, but the writing I'm guessing has always been imaginative. Like Star Trek TOS looked hokey, but the stories were pretty good.

I'll reiterate, the last Doctor Who episode, Flatline, was a great piece of sci fi writing. It's more episodic, a monster of the week show, so you don't really need to know the long term storyline that much.  It was fun and that 50 minutes felt like 5.

BTW, the actor playing the Doctor is one of my favorites. He makes the swearing thing really funny. This, is so NSFW . Lots of cursing.

Just read that they're making a second season of The Top of the Lake. Guess I'll check it out when it reaches Netflix.

I finished Manhattan, a bit soapy, but I'll watch anything about the building of the atom bomb. It's been renewed for a 2nd season. I wonder if they'll finish building the bomb next season. I heard that they have plans to go into the history of what happened after WWII and into the Cold War and the massive buildup.
