  1. 1. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being lightest and 10 being firmest, how tightly do you grip the club on a full swing?

I voted 8 above, though realistically that's a goal and I'm probably only a 7 right now.

The secret to a good grip is to grip the club firmly, yet still have relatively loose wrists and forearms. It's a myth that you can't learn to grip the club in such a manner and that your forearms will tighten when you grip a club more firmly. Different (close, but different!) muscles!

I put 7, but it's not really something that I think about much. I think 7 is a good approximation for me though.

My putter is where grip pressure can really hurt me. I tend to death-grip it a bit, and that gets me into trouble sometimes. But this is about the full swing so, yeah, 7.

I was under the impression, even though I don't do it, that you want a loose grip or do you want to grip it tight but have loose wrists?

Errgh....I've taken the Nicklaus tip (in reverse) of a firmer grip in my right hand (the left for all of you) than I have in my left. I voted 7, though; I wish it was about a 5.5. I hit it further and my mishits have less dispersion when I have a lighter grip.

Tight grip for my everything except my putter where i have a very soft grip.

I have always been told to have a lighter grip on a golf club. but, when I do, I always feel like I am going to lose my club. so, an 8 for me.

Backswing or downswing? I'm pretty sure my grip gets tighter on the downswing, but have no idea how much. What I do know is that if I grip it harder at address, I have a tendency to get overactive wrists and forearms, which leads to pulls and pushes. I have not mastered the high grip pressure, but low arm tension.

It's probably closer to a 5 at address, I have loosened it up a bit the last year since the club kept twisting in my hands during the swing. That may be a result of other things though, but the problem has gone away and I have never pursued the issue of grip pressure since.

Has nobody made a grip pressure device yet? A club with a grip that measure your pressure? Not very useful to a single individual, but if everyone (pros included) gave it a whirl, you could compare the data. I am a believer that the grip pressure should not be as soft as golf instruction commonly have taught us. At least not on a full swing. When chipping, pitching and putting, a too hard grip can ruin the rhythm and flow.

good point zeph, grip pressure on short shots, touchy feely shots should be more soft. but on a full swing, I always grip harder. when i do try to grip looser, the club sometimes turns in my hands at contact.

I voted as an 8.  That is probably more than I should be, but better than I used to be.  I used to be about a 15 and it would cause me all sorts of problems.  I took some lessons and the guy really beat into my head to loosen my death grip.  I have much more control over the club now and am more relaxed through the swing which has helped me a ton.  I feel I could be a little less, but it is working for me for now, so I will stick with it.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

There is one, I know I remember seeing it, I just cant remember what it was called, who made it or anything, Frustrating. Let me see if I bookmarked it on my other machine. I'm not sure if it gave you a numeric value, or if it just beeped when you squeezed too hard. If I can find it, I'll post it.

I voted 4 because I start at four, unfortunately I often tighten it as I swing back.

Well my 7 might be your 10, so i have no clue why this is useful. If i had to put it into something tangeable. If you hold the club vertical and slightly decrease the pressure to were the club starts to fall down, mine would be a few notchs stronger than that. Not sure if that helps, but thats how i like to think about it.

I voted 8....I grip too tight...I have thought of working on it, tried interlock grip which loosens it, but feels too loose...one day!

This needed a 2-part vote. Top hand versus Bottom hand.

For me it's top hand 5, bottom hand 8/9. But I estimate that 60% or so of my total grip is between my bottom hand's thumb and index finger. Maybe not QUITE 60%, but that is where I grip the hardest.

My short game instructor, Pat O'Brien, advocates a firm grip (with putter, wedges) in the fingers, with everything else (rest of hand, wrists, forearms, etc.) relaxed. I've taken that to the full swing. I find it difficult to hit a solid putt, wedge, iron, driver shot - without a firm grip in the fingers.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
