Still struggle hitting less than full swings, something else I need to practice

The 2/3 swing is how I learned to hit the ball well. I noticed early on that whenever I punched out of woods (which was quite often) I made great contact - hands ahead, compressing the ball with downward contact. So, I decided to simply play that swing permanently.

The 2/3 - 3/4 swing is a very important tool IMO, you should def take the time to learn it.

52* wedge, how much of a swing depends on where the flag is. More to it than the yardage to the center.

I would probably open my 52 to a 54 and take a smooth full swing. 80% of the time it works... 20% I have a skully. After the shot i swear I'll use a pitching wedge next time.

48 Pitching wedge if I can run it up, 60 SW if I want to drop it like a bomb.

In my  bag:

Driver, Callaway Diablo Edge Tour 9.5 stiff

3, 5 woods: Callaway Diablo Edge Tour 15,18 degrees Stiff

2 hybrid: Callaway Diable Edge Tour 18 degrees R (out when the 5 wood is in)

3,6 hybrids: Callaway Diablo Edge 21 S and 30 degrees R

4,5 hybrids: Callaway Razr X HL 24 and 27 degrees Stiff

7-AW irons: Callaway Razr HL graphite R shafts

SW 54 Callaway X Series Jaws CC Slate Fujikura Graphite Stiff

Putter: Odessey White Ice 1 Blade Putter.

Ball...looking for any ball that hates water, sand, long grass, and getting lost in the woods.

I can't find any, so forced to use ones that seem to love all the above.

I don't really have one right now.  I prefer to be at 90 or 110.

With my old clubs, 100 was a perfect, smooth sand wedge (56).  With my new set, I have a 54.5 and a 59, neither of which I have totally dialed in.  But for now, 100 seems to be right between the two ... so I will try and hit the 54.5 at 90% or so.

Same here.  I'll lay up to 100 whenever I can.

I'd generally prefer to lay up to smooth P wedge distance, which is why I hit a lot of irons off the tee, but from 100 my go-to is a shot I picked up from Bubba Watson's Golf Digest short game segment: with my 56 degree wedge, I put the ball well back in my stance, open up a bit, take a 3/4 swing, and pretty much try to imagine hitting the top of the ball. I get a nice knockdown shot that skips once and stops dead, and having it in the back of my stance keeps me from chunking it, which is my most common short iron/wedge flaw.

I'm not going left or right of those trees, ok? I'm going over those trees...with a little draw.

A lot of variables are not covered in that scenario but the yardage is just right for my sand wedge, so presuming the green is relatively flat and not much above or below me, that would be the club I'd choose.

I like to try and blade a sand wedge or fat a pitching wedge.

All kidding aside, that's a really good distance for me, about a 3/4 sand wedge one hop and stop.

    • I've been thinking about buying a hitting mat for home indoors use. I currently only got a small patch of some mat I bought years ago and stand on a wooden platform. It'd be nice having a mat to stand on and hit from. After some searching, I see Fiberbuilt often being praised. Not sure if I can get hold of it easily here, and buying internationally can get expensive for a mat that's already quite pricey (~$800). The Wittek Quattro is also usually favorably mentioned, and at half the price (~$400) of the Fiberbuilt. Anyone have experince with this mat? Any other suggestions?
    • It just occurred to me that the last time I was serious about golf, my woods were made of….wood! Also interestingly (to me anyway) as I shopped for “woods”, mostly on eBay, I found that all the clubs in really nice cosmetic/aesthetic shape (good finish, nice club face, good grip) were woman’s clubs. Seems they either take really good care of them or don’t use them much.    And lastly, for now anyway, I went to a range today that has Top Tracer monitors at all the stations - another “new” development that may have been around for quite a while, but this was a first for me. I found it useful although I’m sure I only scratched the surface of its capabilities.
    • Agreed. For me, the feel was introduced to get the arms moving down from the top. It wasn't necessarily a "get it in front of the hip" explanation as the correct position but more for an exaggerated feel to get rid of the earlier issue.
