Got hosed last Sat. Couldn't find any courses near that were open despite temps in 50's. What I didn't know is about 20 miles south they didn't get as much snow. I called a friend and headed out to grab game day snacks at the Asian market, which is 20 miles south. No snow down there and it was 65 degrees at 3PM. Courses were open but I didn't see an abundance of carts or cars in the lot. Sadly it was too late to change plans.

I got up early yesterday but it was back down to 20's and dry so I headed to one of the courses I saw open on Sat. Was optimistic when I saw the row of carts in front of the clubhouse but it faded fast. Frost delay so I waited, and waited and waited until finally giving up at 11:10. Frost was gone from the green I could see but the staff was buzzing around on carts and said several on the course still had frost and it would be at least another 45 so I bailed. By then there were 50 guys waiting so it would have been a crawl anyway.

I played my first simulator round ever with a close friend of mine.  We played Pebble Beach.  I shot a 94 and beat him by 10 strokes.  He usually beats me on the course.  It was a lot of fun.

The only thing that was weird was some of the short game shots. Chips that would usually go 20 yards were going 40 for some reason.  I was using the chipping with a putting method a la @mvmac .  The simulator really gave these a lot of distance compared to how they are on real courses.

Anyone in the eastern Mass area should check this place out.  It is in Georgetown, MA

The simulator I have been playing seems to have the yards ok for short game shots. We have mostly been using "auto putt" (you do not put) since we found it hard to get the right feeling when putting, but the yardage seemed fine for that to.

Just make sure you...

1) Don't hit the ball through the net

2) Then the ball ricochets off of the wooden shelf

3) And finally hits the space heater, which then is all ablaze.

I love this game.

50* is usually my cut off, but I may have to bundle up and tough it out this weekend.

Will be out for sure Sat and Sun. Temps in the high 50's and sunset isn't until 5:04. Liking the longer days.

32 on Friday, 42 on Saturday and 37 on Sunday. Marginal to be sure.

We still have a pretty solid layer of snow on the manor. The big question is whether that disappears in a timely fashion.

No golf here. Cold, snow, everything closed. Don't have any simulators nearby either. And I've got school to focus on.

Keeping the swing warm by playing tennis, which I started last year. Good fun!

We get revenge late spring-fall when our courses are perfect and theirs are burnt out.

I'd trade frozen for burnt out.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
