Wow.

Didn’t he shoot 60 something in this last year? He made a lot of birdies.

Anyway, my take on today’s round. He hit a lot of good shots. He hit driver a lot, which I like. He holed some decent putts too. He did appear to me to be hitting his putts pretty hard. I’d sooner see him rolling it a foot by rather than 3-4+ feet by. He flubbed a couple of chips but others did too. I think that’s a little rust and the Bermuda being tough. He was also about 2 yards from having an 8 foot eagle putt on 9 and wound up making 6. That after a flubbed chip and a blasted putt from the fringe. Much promising stuff in there for the future. As he gets those things dialed in I think we could see some real fireworks next year. I really want to see just how good these young guys are. None of them have had a fit and strong Tiger breathing down their necks. That’ll really sort the men out from the boys. I can’t wait.

Coverage is all set up to cover all 75 plus shots Tiger takes for round 1 and 2.

Only six more shots in round two and you'll be at those 75 plus shots.

Only… you meant 75+ in each round, not the two rounds combined. :-)

Or is the poor technique due to yips? I saw he hit some bad ones today. He did play well though.

I think people throw out the word "yips" too quickly. Watching him, it looked like the club hit the ground before the ball. I don't have the yips, but I frequently make a similar error.

I was wrong on the 2 rounds. I don't think there is a cut so he will get 4 rounds in. He played well but I didn't put much thought into the course playing easy. Only 2 guys over par and he is closer to last place than winning. Let's be honest here but he should be happy and anyone who is a Tiger fan should be happy with how he played.

Huh?

He's T8. Last is 18th.

Also, he's -3, the lead is -6, and the last two places are +1 and +3. So he's three back of first, and four and six ahead of last and next to last.

So… no.

He seemed to be striking the ball very well. The key that I could see was he was pain free.

There are more guys in front of him than behind him. You know what I mean. There is a reason his betting odds are +2400

He's not closer to first than last. He's three shots from first, six from last. And he beat your 75+ estimate by 6 or more.

Don't be a hater.

I told you he played well. He also got lucky on some shots that could have led to penalties, the course is playing easy and there are more players in front of him than behind him who we know several of them will go real low. He has to be pleased but he is far from back. He looks to still have the yips and playing on this grass isn't going to help. They mowed the grass so it leaves you into the grain pitches a lot.

What are you talking about? Tiger has won tournaments, as many other golfers have, who were 3 shots and more off the lead after day 1. And the yips? Uh, no. Those were difficult chips from against  the grain, tight sticky Bermuda. Come on man, you're being a bit too cynical. He hasn't played competitively in how long? And he's 3 off the lead, and beat golfers who have been playing non-stop . Pretty damn good I'd say.

He was hitting the ball better than I expected. Still looked a little rusty with the short game, but not terrible.

He also caught an unfortunate bounce or two that led to strokes instead of scoring.

Yeah. Maybe they said first opening round in the 60s?

I think it was his first opening round in the 60s since then. Which is like 5 tournaments ago or something for him. But still.

Apropos of nothing, my favorite Tiger stat is that he's won on tour more recently than Phil.

I think that's the favorite stat of any troo Tiger fan....

So it seems like Tigs has some length back, no? I mean he blew it by Thomas several times, significantly.

    • 12/24/2024 So Christmas Eve we hosted the family. But I still found some time before and some time after to get some solid mirror work in. Yay!
    • Day 85 - 2024-12-24 Practiced for 90 minutes (which probably means I hit about 60 golf balls). No launch monitor, but plenty of aids and feedback.
    • So got fitted in a 35" Odyssey Microhinge Double wide 'blade' yesterday at GG. Choice was between it, SQ to SQ, LAB DF3, Rose Axis and Mizuno Craft  (also a double wide). Apparently I'm pretty good a aiming right of the hole consistently regardless of putter type. But it all came down to distance control and the insert feel. We hit puts in the putting area for the fitting but then ended up on the aisle carpet to hit long 40ish feet putts. Which is where the Microhinge did the best for my stroke. The Mizuno was a close second. The DF3 and Axis weren't bad either but I just felt really confident over the Microhinge and slightly soft but firm contact resonated so well. FWIW, I wanted to like the lie-angle balanced putters more than I did and was prepared to spend a bit. I guess putting is the individualistic aspect of our game. Hopefully, I didn't leave anything on the table. Anyone who knows my putting knows I need all the help I can get.
    • The driver swing honestly feels good. Haven't played in a/the course for a bit but did pretty good at the sim place yesterday.  The idea has been to reduce twisting shaft instinctively at impact. For this have weakened left hand grip considerably. Pushed higher up in the hollow of the palm to take out index finger and thumb in pressure application which is a major are major contributors of shaft twisting at impact. On the flip side, right hand grip is way down in the lower part of the middle fingers. Not using index or thumb much at all. It also is designed to prevent getting underneath the shaft too much at impact. More of a float-loady  'paint the ball' feel through the ball. Overall address and neutral grip keeps both lead and trail sides on respective sides of the shaft instead of over or underneath the shaft. It seems it allows/promotes moving the shaft/club unit in unison with wrist/elbow/shoulder joints similar to an elephant swinging it's trunk. It does not feel like I am guiding the club path or trying to control club face at all. Fairly organic. Playing TPC Sawgrass in about a month. Will see how it all holds up. I hear its a good test.. heh.
