I hate that I agree with this. But the guy is like a Ferrari with four flat tires trying to go 200 mph. Bad things can only come from that.

He turns 50 on December 30th. I wonder how long Golf Cart Tiger lasts out there.

Thank you for sharing that. He was quite good wasn't he? I was curious, so took a look. He played 19 PGA Tour stroke play events in 2000. He was 263 under par (they did point that out at the end of the video). If you look at each event he played in and take the best score in each event for a player not called Tiger Woods, that combined field score was -259. So he beat the field - where the field resets every week - over the course of an entire season. That's mind blowing.

Just tell Tiger you'll give him $10M if he lets you beat him on one hole. Hell, give him $25M.

That's a tough one - assuming we exclude the possibility of bribing him to let you win a hole, it's going to be non-trivial. That said, prime Tiger did make bogeys (even doubles and triples - he made both in the 2000 US Open I think), but on the other hand, the holes he's doing that on are holes that I would also struggle on. I'd imagine I could tie him on quite a few holes, but beating him would take making a par on a very difficult hole at the right time or making a birdie when he doesn't.

72 holes on the courses I play, I average probably about 6-7 birdies, 45-50 pars, 15-20 bogeys and 2-3 doubles in tournaments. So on the courses he was playing in his prime, that might be 3 birdies, 35-40 pars, 20-25 bogeys, 7-10 doubles - something like that. He's making 1 eagle, 15-20 birdies, 45-50 pars, 3-4 bogeys and maybe 1 double if I'm lucky. Given that my birdies are almost certainly coming on holes that he birdies and his bogeys are coming on the holes I bogey, so to win I have to match either a par to his bogey, a birdie to his par, or get lucky and not match his double. I'm not sure I like my odds. With the enormous swings in the prize vs the penalty, I would probably take the $1mm.

Having said that, it would depend where we were playing. US Open conditions on a US Open course then I'm at best 50/50 to win one. If it's Bethpage yellow, then my birdies count goes up (his would too, but not by as much), so my odds would be much better. $100mm would be nice but no thanks to a year in jail. Probably still not taking the bet.

Lou Stagner evaluated with in a thread on X the other day. His conclusion with some math to back it up: A 10 handicap would have a 12% chance of beating Tiger on a single hole in a round at his prime under tournament conditions. I find it hard to believe, but Lou seems to know what he is talking about.

I don’t. What if a 10 handicap makes three birdies in a round. Just caught a heater. Not that uncommon. Then Tiger would have to match.

I can't recall ever seeing a 10 HI get more than one birdie in a round, but I know they exist. I would not say that this would be the typical 10 handicapper. Now the comparison was from the championship tees under tournament conditions not the 6,000-yard public course.

He is saying 12% chance, so 12 out of 100 would beat tiger on one hole in an 18 hole round.

That would be 1800 holes played. What if Tiger hits a ball OB? The odds in that moment jump to better that 50/50.

72 holes, not 18 holes.

Edit - the original question was 72 holes, but Stagner apparently said in one round - I find it hard to believe that a 10 handicap would beat Tiger on one hole out of 18, 12% of the time. That's 40% of the time over four rounds. Surprisingly high. I wonder if the 12% is for four rounds - that would sit more closely with my "hmm" factor.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
