My experience with these surgeries is that it often takes two of them to get the job done. If you get one, you usually will have to have another a few years later.

I remember hearing that Tiger took the surgery that would get him back quicker, but perhaps back in the operating room sooner, than the more permanent surgery that had a long rehab process.

Don't know if that is true or not.

I don't think that is true but I don't know what is going on with his back other than disc bulging. Options could be fusion but it really depends on the severity.

Tiger is a living legend. He deserves credits, i will root for him if he makes a comeback. And it's sad to say there is an if in that sentence.

I think it's odd to commit to the Frys event 5 days before the surgery, seems like he had to know the surgery was a significant possibility, if not already scheduled, as of the 11th. Perhaps he was hoping to get a more favorable last second diagnosis, but was the cut-off date for signing up for Fry's really so soon that he had to commit now?

In my experience it would be extremely unusual to arrange a doctor visit, especially with a back specialist - and the one who operated the first time - and then schedule and complete elective surgery in the space of 5 days, barring a medical emergency.  I believe Woods suspected what the issue was and was looking into it well before he made the announcement about committing to the event.

One note on this - while he officially "committed" recently, that was just a formality.  Back in 2012, Tiger (and Rory and a few others IIRC) committted to play in the Frys at least once by 2015, in return for an exemption to play in a $$$ event in Turkey:

Tiger's body is breaking down faster than he can fix it, it's likely the result of a life spent swinging golf clubs at maximum force.  I won't be shocked if 2016 is his last year on the PGA Tour, especially if it is anything like 2015.

Tiger is like an old George Foreman thinking about getting back in the ring with an in his prime Mike Tyson, he doesn't seem to have all the tools he needs to beat the young guns on tour.  At some point he's going to have to evaluate if playing sub par golf is worth the risk of damaging his body more.  We've seen guys hang on too long in other sports and it not only hurt their legacy but they paid the price physically as well.

I'd like to see him get a few more wins, but I think the quest for Jack's record is over.

tiger's mind is breaking down faster than his body.

And it was tiger's mind that made him great.

tiger has turned into a mental midget, and that's the primary reason he sucks now.

Not unusual for a celebrity like Tiger Woods. Most likely they discussed this at the time of his first surgery..." If you start experiencing..sharp jolts, radiating pain, etc...we may have to go back in....

Exceptions are made for big names. Hell, a college football player will have an MRI done minutes after the injury.

MRIs are completely different. They take a few minutes to perform and require only a technician to operate the machine while you lie down, you only undress if necessary. Surgery is a major procedure requiring multiple professionals of different specialties and specialized surroundings and operating room.  Plus, discussing at the "first tome of surgery" is not a formal scheduling of all the people and equipment necessary, which are usually reserved well in advance, again, other than emergency situations. And the doctor operated  in Utah, while Woods lives in Florida, so he didn't just drop by. .

As for preferential treatment for celebrities, while possible, I think this is more assumed than real. My wife just had a couple major ops and even though a close work colleague who chaired the hospital board made calls, which helped get the right doctor, it still took a while to get things completed.

The point of all this is not that Woods did something wrong, just that I think he knew more about his situation than he let on at the time he announced.

I appreciate your input. I'm a physician and I can tell you Tiger knew there was an issue however it would not be unusual for someone with that high a profile to get the minor surgery he had done in an expedited fashion. I'm quite aware of how the surgery procedure goes as I've assisted in many of them.

I thought Tiger could come back and win majors again, but each time he has back surgery, I get less certain. He didn't do well this year, but played golf without too much injuries. This means months without golf, having to get back to health, practice, etc. I don't expect much from him in 2016 after these news. This is not just bad news short term, but he's had many surgeries now and the back issues keeps resurfacing. I think he's still got the skills and ability to be a great golfer, but maybe the body can't keep up.

IMHO, I think Tiger's time has passed.  It was great to see a legend in the making growing up, but alas all things must come to an end.

Tiger will have lifelong back problems. I had 2 back surgeries which forced my retirement from golf about 7 years ago. I still suffer even though I went to the best doctors.

The way Tiger puts pressure on his back, twisting, turning, weights, he's either done or close to done.

I think its time for Tiger to retire and do something else.

Someone who actually knows what Tiger Woods is going through weighs in on Tiger Woods

Well, not 120mph, but I get the picture. I wonder: 120mph CHS = X meters/sec rotation? I'm sure that varies, so whatever range X is in.

The fact that the spin doesn't turn at 120 mph clearly tells me the guy has no fricken clue what he is talking about :-D

Rory's hips have been measured at moving 700 degrees per second. Lets say he has a waist of 30 inches. The point furthest away from the spine has a linear velocity of 183 inches per second or 10 mph. Hardly the 120 mph stated above. Rory does swing faster than Tiger ;)

From a sports science video,

Rory's Hips: 700 degs/sec

Rory's Shoulders: 925 dec/sec

Rory's Arms: 1400 deg/sec

Hard to say how much the clubhead moves because out of all the parts of the swing it moves the least in a true circular motion. Really the angle from the lead arm to the club doesn't change till about the hands reaching waist height. It's an easily calculation to find out the angular speed of the clubhead at impact.

120 mph*1.47 x 360 deg / 2*pi*3.75 = 2695 deg/sec

1.47 is converting mph to feet per second

3.75 is a 45" driver converted to feet

19 years ago to this day, Woods won his first event. Step into the way back machine. Lots of video caps and gifs. And one of him kneeling over from a groin injury. Looks familiar, huh?

    • LIV golf was pretty close to me in 2023, at the same course that hosted the 2023 Senior PGA.  I didn't go to either one.  I do know a few people who went to the LIV event, and they said it was pretty well attended and pretty well run.  If I had free tickets, I might show up, but I'd probably have to drive 10 miles to park to get a shuttle to come back to within 5 miles of my house.
    • As long as "in town" means a drive of less than an hour, I'd probably go.  I've never actually been to a pro golf event, so it would be a novelty. Presumably, they'd be playing on a course that I'm not normally allowed to visit, so there would be an interest in just going to see the place. My tolerance for traffic is pretty minimal, so if massive headaches are predicted it would dampen my enthusiasm.
    • I would definitely buy tickets and go watch a round or two.
