Please don't rush it, don't want anymore of him not finishing tournaments, that's a real drag. He can't control what his body does, but it just seems he rushes (or is under incredible pressure to) his return too soon, but that's just a perception, I'm no fly on the wall.

Yeah, the progress seems to have taken off...

I get he wants to return and if he is healthy, great!  But maybe he should play more than a few practice rounds before coming back to the tour.

that was an incredible article on the last 10 years of Tiger. I had no idea he had such a fixation with the military.

Not many did, he really keeps everything in his life super covert, but now that we know it's easy to see what caused his demise.

I guess we can finally put to rest all that talk about his "yips", he didn't have any yips, he had a body that doesn't work anymore and a mind far from the game, probably still does, I think this article really lowers our expectations of another run, even if he becomes interested in golf again can his body recover at this age? highly doubt it, and besides, he's probably playing video games thinking about a 18 mile run in combat boots right now instead of golf. Nobody would really know either way.

That was indeed a very good read.  It makes you almost feel bad for the guy.  Its a perfect example of the saying that money can't buy happiness.  He has everything and almost nothing.

Agreed. It was well written with some new anecdotes, but the overall themes surrounding Tiger Woods remain unchanged by the article.

I liked the article.  Funny how time changes perspective.  When HH's book came out four years ago, the forum was up in arms over the breach of Tiger's privacy, unsupported allegations, and conclusions based on amateur psychoanalysis.  The conclusion now, on essentially all of the same stories (although with better source development WRT the Navy Seal stuff) is "good read--I feel for Tiger."

The Navy Seal stuff is interesting, and tying it all to Earl's passing gives it a context that at least makes superficial sense.  I don't recall HH putting that much emphasis on how Earl's death affected Tiger.  Seems like HH should have known about that--maybe I'll go back and re-read a few chapters.

WARNING:  WILD SPECULATION FOLLOWS.

The timing of Tiger's comeback (full practice sessions, now maybe playing at Quail Hollow) seems tied to the article about him dealing with the prospect of being done with competitive golf.  It seems almost as if...

--Tiger is coming back to spite MJ.  "Who is he to say I'm not going to be great again?"  If that's the case, you have to wonder if it's too soon.

--Or maybe MJ made those comments about his friend because he knew Tiger was physically ready, and he needed something to push him off of the couch.  Knowing Tiger couldn't take being called out as tired and hopeless over his golf future (or something like that)...

Obviously that's me reaching for a salacious story based on absolutely nothing.

I think Tiger should wait until next year, even if he is physically capable of playing now.  He's not that old:  he can be very competitive from ages 41-47.  He should practice, play rounds, practice, wait, deny himself, and everything else until next spring.  By that time he'll be itching to compete so bad that he just might win 10 in a row.  (Plus he'll give his back a full year when he doesn't have to push through if/when something hurts.)

I would love to see Tiger back in action this year, but truly believe he should take the time to let his back and various other injured body parts heal properly.  If that means next year, so be it.  If he does that, I truly believe he could compete on the tour and possibly win one or two more majors.  After all, Vijay Singh is still reasonably competitive at around the age of 50 or so.  And he may be even more of a range rat than Tiger

Stevie's book talked about the Seals, so the article was not too much a surprise to me.

He's gonna have to improve his putting from what it was most recently if he wants to contend.

Yeah, given where he was barely able to walk in December, it still feels verry soon. Not being able to walk due to pain is a major body warning signal. Got to be extra careful.

I'm not his doctor, but my gut agrees with this...if I was in his position.

This is not the same thing. The author matters. An outside reporter HH is not.

I think there are similarities.....the author doesn't matter, but the sources do....HH was his own source and breached some privacy etiquette....but there were sources in this story that did the exact same thing...I was fairly surprised how forthcoming Jordan was for one example...but the bottom line is that Tiger is a public figure and he has to deal with it...

The author matters a tremendous amount. Tiger didn't trust and pay the SEALs who shared their experiences, and he definitely didn't trust and pay a reporter.

Exactly, Hank was on PGA Tour radio claiming vindication that the article reported similar information he wrote in his book about Tigers involvement with the SEALS.  Hank doesn't seem to understand that he violated a trust and confidence that the author of the ESPN article didn't.  Hank of course took the opportunity to expand on his time with Tiger during this period and hawk his book some more.  Hank is a real bottom feeder.

Justice was served though after he spoke about Tiger a caller told him he should be grateful for the opportunity he had to coach Tiger because otherwise no one would have known who Hank Haney was.  Haney of course argued he was a Top 10 instructor before Tiger and that he was doing quite well, but the called emphasized that he'd never heard of Hank until he became Tigers coach.

    • I really think it's just to keep people from doing silly stuff like saying "Oh, yeah, that spike mark will be my ball marker." or "That slightly greener blade of grass." Then when they go to replace their ball they have literally no idea which spike mark or blade of grass.

    • Not trying to be difficult, but did the USGA/R&A provide a rationale in 2016 for why the object needs to be artificial?  I would assume it is to make sure your mark is absolutely identifiable to you so you re-mark your ball in the correct location, and not accidently in a location where a similar natural object is sitting?  If that is the case, I would think that taking a natural object and humanly modifying it (drawing on it with marker, ripping it in half, etc) would be enough to make the object identifiable and turn the natural object into an artificial one.
