Look here, I really like Jordan Speith, I really hope he wins it. But the announcers won't stop saying he's 20 years old. YES WE GET IT, HE's 20 YEARS OLD!

Yes, but how old is he?

Perhaps there are some good scores to be had today ... Gary Woodland is -4 through 6 holes and all the way up to a tie for 10th. Gonna be a fun afternoon!

Whoever sold Brad Faxon that suit has a great sense of humor.

Comes with a free bowl of soup. :-P

Oh, just wait. Nantz is going to cream himself so much today over the Speith/Scott pairing that I might have to mute the television. And if they both do well today, Nantz and TGC are just going to be unbearable.

I do like the rapid-fire chats, but we're just supposed to use this thread. ----------------------- Also, first round ratings down 28% this year: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/golf-devil-ball-golf/the-tiger-effect--espn-s-ratings-down-almost-30-percent-for-masters-opening-round-190435098.html

Someone was talking about it earlier ( @Golfingdad ?), but they just displayed this graphic on the Amen Corner feed: (Pardon my shaky hands. One of many reasons I never became a surgeon.) So 11 is the toughest, 12 is the second toughest, 13 is second easiest.

Wow Woodland -3 through 9 and still has the two easy par 5s to go that he should obliterate with his length. This was the kind of round I expected from Rory...but he is going the other direction.

Part of par is not only the horizontal distance, but also how long it plays (and generally, which integer they expect the scores to be closest to). 11 is significantly downhill and doesn't have water fronting the entire green. I think the green is larger, too, or at least deeper. You can also tell how accurate par is by the second shot played by pros -- how often have you seen someone lay up on 11 from the fairway? What of 13? The pros aren't looking at par when they make this decision, but how many strokes it will take them to get the ball in the hole. The closest I've seen to a layup on 11 is the occasional draw player aiming right of the green so a missed green results in a chip instead of a drop. Not saying it's right or wrong -- just trying to explain why you can have two holes so close in yardage and yet they're a different par.

They don't lay up, per se, but players constantly bail out to the flat landing area short and right of the green. That second shot is scary, the angle the players are coming from makes the water very much in play.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
