There was plenty of time left. When the play clock was set for second down, there were 58 seconds left. The Seahawks let the clock run down because they didn't want to leave any time left for NE to score. That was dumb. The priority should have been to score, no matter what.

This.  The situation did not dictate the what Seattle did.

Yep, thought the same thing. Shows how close the NFC teams were this season. I think GB or Dal could have won the SB this year. I don't say that to demean Seattle since really they should have won. But to indicate how good the top NFC teams were this year. No other AFC team would have had a prayer in that game. It was a fun year and oh yes, Dez caught that ball, actually and by rule.

I don't know ... I wouldn't have slept on Baltimore in the Super Bowl, but in general, yeah, I agree that the NFC was quite a bit deeper (at the top) this year.

[quote name="Gunther" url="/t/76052/are-you-ready-for-some-nfl-football-2014-edition/750_30#post_1089298"]AFC not in the hunt this year. Lombardi will rest in Dallas, Green Bay or Seattle come Feb. But, enjoy the playoffs...

It is really amazing, and a sign of how much (and by much, i mean little) legacies reflect underlying reality, that a few neurons misfiring inside Pete Carroll's head could have such a deep and lasting effect on the legacies of so many people.  How different would all the talk have been today if Pete had given the ball to Lynch and he punched it home.  As any sensible person would have.

And for the record the FIAT commercial where the viagra turns a little car into a big car was one of the funnest commercials I've ever seen.

It reminded me of the old joke about the rabbi who did all the circumcisions at his temple and after years of saving the tips took them to a shoemaker who made him a wallet that, when it sees a pretty girl, turns into a suitcase.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Whatever you do, don't download the game.  My brother in law got me hooked.  Its terrible and addicting.   [rule] I can't decide if I liked the robot lion entrance, the fire dress, or the "the more you know" exit best. I agree, don't download the game!

hmmm..

"this is where I go off on what a low life this guy is, bla bla bla"

I guess not many people thought of him as an upstanding citizen anyway, so I'm sure this will fizzle out rather quickly.

I'm sure there are people who support prostitution though, so they aren't going to think anything of this either.

Sapp got fired for getting caught, the NFL Network knows that the "escort" industry skyrockets during Super Bowl week and I'd bet a lot of money Sapp wasn't the only person associated with the NFL or networks that paid for escorts that week.  Without more details it's hard to say who's at fault, a man (especially Sapp's size) should never hit a woman, but who knows what the escorts did to Sapp that led to him hitting them.

I laughed out loud at the statement that officials were "cracking down" on prostitution this year.  I'm sure they cracked down on prostitution like they did on beer consumption.

A good stat to support throwing the ball on 2nd down for Seattle.

Teams who threw the ball were 9% more likely to score a TD at the 1 yard line.

Out of the near 110 times a ball was thrown from the 1 yard line, only ONCE was the ball intercepted, and that was at the Superbowl.

Lynch is actually not that good at scoring from with in 5 yards of the goal line. He is well below the league average in scoring TD's with in 5 yards rushing the ball.

If you could cite your sources, that'd be great, but I trust your information is good. I'd be willing to bet Darrell Bevell knows this, which is why he called the play he called. Plaxico Burress thinks they should have threw a fade ;-)

I read it yesterday in Bill Barnwell's column: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/super-bowl-new-england-patriots-seattle-seahawks/

Quote:
On the other hand, by throwing on second down, you could get two cracks at running the football while providing some semblance of doubt for the Patriots. If Wilson’s pass on second down is incomplete (and he avoids a sack, which seems likely given his ability to scramble), the clock stops with something like 20 seconds to go. That means you can run the ball on third down, use your final timeout, and then run the ball again on fourth down. All three plays come with the possibility of either throwing or running, which prevents the Patriots from selling out against one particular type of play.
You might argue that the logic there doesn’t include the danger of throwing the football and the downside of an interception, and that’s true, but there are negative possibilities in every play call. In fact, this season it was more dangerous to run the football from the 1-yard line than it was to throw it. Before Sunday, NFL teams had thrown the ball 108 times on the opposing team’s 1-yard line this season. Those passes had produced 66 touchdowns (a success rate of 61.1 percent, down to 59.5 percent when you throw in three sacks) and zero interceptions. The 223 running plays had generated 129 touchdowns (a 57.8 percent success rate) and two turnovers on fumbles.

Another thing that could have been on Carrolls/Bevells minds was their last playoff loss, to Atlanta in 2012:

Quote:

That was during the 2012 playoffs, when the Seahawks came back from a 27-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to take a 28-27 lead with 34 seconds to go. In that game, the Seahawks handed the ball to Lynch on first-and-goal from the 2-yard line, and he immediately scored.

Despite the stunning comeback, Atlanta got the ball back with two timeouts, completed a pair of passes, and got a 49-yard field goal from Matt Bryant to win the game.

Also, it's easy to look at this call in a vacuum without recognizing that the same style of aggressive play calling is what defines the Seahawks and what got them to this point in the first place.  They are a little Phil Mickelson-y, you might say.  It's the same aggressive play calling that got them the touchdown at the end of the first half.  Wild guess here, but I'd say 28 or 29 out of 32 coaches kick the field goal with 6 seconds left and then it's entirely possible that they're not in that situation at the end.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Tom Brady gave his newly acquired Super Bowl  Chevy truck to Malcolm Butler. Just another classy move by a classy QB.  It doesn't surprise me the Patriots are a first class team!

    • I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.
    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
