It doesn't cut and past very well because it is a slide show.

6 PGA Tour Swing Thoughts

The best players don't get overwhelmed with mechanical thoughts as they stand over the ball. They pick one feel-based thought and go with it. Steal one of these tour thoughts for some pre-swing clarity.

Graeme's is interesting.

A lot of good players will then, sensing the club being "out there," drop it in behind them and swing out more.

I didn't think I really had any swing thoughts but since I do what Rory's swing thought was I guess I do. Wish it produced the same results for me. LOL

P.S. I didn't even know Paula Creamer was on the "PGA Tour". (Just joking).

I like the facial muscles thing. I'll try that out on the course and see how it goes.

I can see swing thoughts in a rehearsal swing to get the body ready for the shot.

But over the ball, aren't you thinking target?

This ties in with another recent GD piece - the budget aids one - the cookie in the mouth tip. I'm guessing chewy is better than hard/crunchy for this purpose.

I'd rather think about my body or something closer than 100-250 yards away. If I think about something more directly related to the target, it might be the starting angle of the ball, but that's still just the intial direction right off the club. After the ball has left the clubface, it's out of my control.

See Target Oriented Golf if interested ... the idea is to escape swing thoughts or thoughts other than the target -- unconscious competence in the physical act of swinging, conscious competence in terms of focus on the target.

I took the course and will review it in a few months to see if it has substance.

I like Hunter's swing thought, I use that if my contact is getting spotty, works well.

Ya, no kidding. Sometimes I can get a little hooky if I'm exaggerating feels too much, pretty sure if I tried Greame's fix on-course I could hook it hard enough to come up behind me.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

I like it, good stuff in there.

But sadly it's easy for a pro that has been doing little but play golf since they were a kid to not think too much, the rest of us need a checklist and I doubt I'll be tossing mine away any time soon.

Yeah, GMac's thought sounds a lot like the old Rickie Fowler takeaway/backswing "feel" that's been discussed from time to time here.

I had the same thought as EJ--I thought it helped to get my downswing more in-to-out.

And Hunter's is clearly from watching the 5SK "Squish the Ball to Strike it Solid" video!

Rudy left out the part that said, "They pick one feel-based thought based on their priority piece and go with it. It is always interesting to hear the pro's swing thoughts.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
