Hmmm....when you are implying that your significantly more successful countryman is, himself, "useless," there's a fair chance his six majors versus his critic's zero majors might start to spring to the forefront of people's minds.

Faldo belongs to a certain type of English sportsman - not especially well liked by his peers and contemporaries, it seems - and opinionated. I've always thought of Nick Faldo as being to golf as Geoff Boycott was to cricket; but then both men were the English superstars of their day, highly successful, know their sport inside out, and post-playing careers have insightful comments to make.

I quite like watching Ian Poulter play golf, but encouraging his ghost-writer to go after Faldo in the closing pages of his autobiography was fatuous. And the resultant twitter-wars are buffoonish and silly.

It wasn't Bishop's job to take up the cause for Faldo, Faldo is a big boy and can defend himself.  The fact that Bishop even inserted himself into their squabble indicates he has lost perspective on his "role" as President of the PGA.

The lesson for Ted Bishop? Never get into a pissing match with a master of media whoring.

Couldn't agree more.

Bishop's comments were more just lame than they were anything else. This guy is an idiot and lacks any of the skills needed to lead the PGA.

I'm trying to think whether Peter Dawson would survive if he'd have suggested that Phil Mickelson was a "choking excuse maker who's own career wasn't as good as Tom Watson's and perhaps this is repsonsible for him behaving like a silly jealous girl". Tricky one. He might get away with it, provided he apologised, purely because he'd been instrumental in the recent vote to admit women into the R&A.; If he hadn't been, and it got caught on a 'no news day' I suspect he'd be made to resign within 3-4 days

Why do you keep equating Bishop and Peter Dawson?  They hold completely different positions.  Obviously Bishop is not someone of a temperment to hold a high position in an organization for a long time.  He is PGA President for a limited period and then returns to his (richly deserved, as it turns out) obscurity.  The US analog to Peter Dawson is Mike Davis of the USGA.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Social media abuse in this case. If I ran an organization, I would strongly encourage my executives to abstain from social media.

After sending an insensitive tweet directed at Ian Poulter a day earlier, Ted Bishop was ousted as president of the PGA of America.  The board of directors voted to remove Bishop from office, the PGA of America announced in a press release Friday evening. The board deemed his remarks inconsistent with the group's policies.

He had one month left on his two-year term.  Bishop tweeted at Poulter in response to the golfer's statement about Nick Faldo in his new book.  Bishop's Tweet: "Faldo's record stands by itself. Six majors and all-time RC points. Yours vs. His? Lil girl."  He also posted this on Facebook, in response to Poulter's comments about Faldo: "Really? Sounds like a little school girl squealing during recess. C'MON MAN!"

"The PGA of America understands the enormous responsibility it has to lead this great game and to enrich lives in our society through golf," PGA Chief Executive Officer Pete Bevacqua said in the release. "We must demand of ourselves that we make golf both welcoming and inclusive to all who want to experience it, and everyone at the PGA of America must lead by example."

Bishop said in an email Thursday night to The Associated Press, "Obviously I could have selected some different ways to express my thoughts on Poulter's remarks. Golf had always been a sport where respect was shown to its icons. That seems to have gone by the wayside."

He has worked as general manager and PGA director of golf at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin, Ind., since 1991. He has served the PGA of America in several capacities as board member, vice president and past chair of the Code of Ethics Task Force.

Vice president Derek Sprague has been appointed interim president until the election of national officers takes place Nov. 22 when Bishop's term was to expire.

At the Ryder Cup last month in Scotland, Bishop made news when he got "USA" shaved into the side of his head, showing the team spirit Rickie Fowler inspired.

He only had one month left on his two year term so maybe he wanted to out now for some reason.

PGA president Bishop removed from office

Following controversial comments made on social media one day earlier, PGA of America president Ted Bishop was removed from office by the organization Friday evening, the PGA announced in a news release. GolfChannel.com first reported the news of Bishop's removal.

Sources told GolfChannel.com that Bishop was given the option to announce his resignation and chose not to accept that option.

Though his tenure was scheduled to end Nov. 22, with vice president Derek Sprague to serve as interim president. Paul Levy, the organization's current secretary, will assume dual responsibilites as both vice president and secretary until next month's election.

The PGA of America said its Board of Directors voted to remove Bishop, the 38th PGA President, from office for insensitive gender-based statements posted yesterday on social media. The Board deemed the remarks to be inconsistent with the policies of the PGA.

“The PGA of America understands the enormous responsibility it has to lead this great game and to enrich lives in our society through golf,” said PGA Chief Executive Officer Pete Bevacqua. “We must demand of ourselves that we make golf both welcoming and inclusive to all who want to experience it, and everyone at the PGA of America must lead by example.”

That's interesting, he was given an opportunity to save face and resign but chose not to.  I can't imagine other than to initiate a law suit why he'd not bow out gracefully and on his own terms given he only had a month left of his 2 year term.

Probably didn't think he did anything wrong.

I don't know @jamo he's supposed to be a smart guy.  Even if he personally didn't think it was wrong he had to know that in this day and age it was going to be viewed as wrong.  I guess we'll see over the next few days if he rides off quietly into the sunset or he tries to make his case in the news.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
