So on 17 green IIRC JB wants to put a new ball into play because he thinks the old one is damaged, asks Ryan Moore if that's ok, Moore says no, JB asks a referee and referee says go ahead.

Not that this happened to me a lot, but this is an old rule, I can honestly say that when asked by a playing competitor or opponent if he wants to put a new ball into play because he think the old one is damaged, I have never said no. Why would you?

What is to gain for JB if he were to replace an undamaged ball? Moore seems like a decent dude but why would he say no?

I understand that it is Moore's job to protect the field, but I can't see here why he would say no, comes off kinda douchey.

What am I missing here?

Could be a glob of mud on the opposite side of the "damage," and it's being used as pretext to get a clean ball? You also get to place the new ball, so maybe you get a better lie? I'm spitballing.

Probably a non story. Remember, Moore isn't an authority so maybe he's just being cautious and saying he's not sure. Imagine how he'd feel if he agreed, then Holmes switched balls, then after the hole an official saw the ball and determined that it wasn't damaged? Note: I didn't actually see it and I'm also spitballing.

I

Because Moore had the courage to say the ball was fine when where was nothing wrong with it. The official was too gutless to say the ball was fine and followed the path of least resistance.

We've all played balls that have been damaged from sand or paths or trees, but you swap them out on the next hole if you cou ld be bothered.

The idea that a scratch could affect a shot is just a joke. It's not 1975 where you could cut a ball open.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I'm not sure I'd use the word courage, but this was the only explanation I could come up with, that Moore just said hey it looks ok to me---

But Shorty, if I was in a match or in a tournament with you and even if the ball looked ok, I'd still let you replace it if you thought it was damaged :-)

I'd probably look great in a wet suit actually!

Plus it'd be fun to add a ton of toe hits to Rory's former 3-iron. I could ruin that thing in one swing!

Golf central pregame - they just said the diver returned it to Rory. They didn't say anything else - whether or not he accepted it or what not.

A scuba diver working for Donald Trump jumped in near the end of Saturday's third round and rescued the club from its watery grave.

Appearing with the club on Golf Central Pre-Game on Sunday, Trump said he is "going to present [the club] to Rory on the practice range, and if he needs it - you know, it is a matched set of clubs - maybe he won't want it, maybe he will, maybe he'll use it today and give it me. But hopefully we can mount it or sell it for charity, one or the other."

Here's Trump returning it to Rory.

It appears Dufners weight loss hasn't helped him much with his game this week.  I am glad he got healthy but I wish he'd kept the hair so I can recognize him.

I've always said about Rory he lives and dies by the putter. His ball-striking is always impeccable, his driver is hit or miss but he finds his way out of trouble, but his putter is the one part of his game that when he's winning, he's making. However, he has a tendency to go Tom Watson and miss the 4-5 footers a lot. He's an aggressive putter meaning he always has 4-5 footers. That's the concern at Augusta. If you remember the last day in 2010, he could not make a short putt to save his life. But when he was on his run last year, not only was he making the long ones, he was making the short ones. That will be his key to getting a green jacket.

JB will really need to mess up today if anyone is going to catch him.

I think the whole 3I thing gave the ratings a 2% boost :-P

Not at all out of the realm considering the amount of water on this course. At this point, however, I wouldn't bet against him.

Looks like Bubba is chasing JB down.

Dustin Johnson must love the par three fourth, because he nearly aced it again.

Surprised there hasn't been a Sherlock Holmes/Watson comment. JB...you're killing me man.

Let's hope does (and he is) because he is one the slowest, most boring players on tour. A real turn off for viewers.

I want him to win simply because I put a bet on him...but otherwise I agree. I dont particularly like his swing at all either.
