I chose three, albeit relucantly because the greens are fast and undulating at my home course so I am generally limited to 60,64 and somtimes 56. I prefer to also using 7-9 irons for bump and run, but my place doesn't have many options for that. Also like to do a putter stroke with a hybrid or 6-iron. And will turn the putter 90 degrees and hit the ball with the head of the putter as well.

Everything around the green used to look like a perfect 60* flop shot or putt to me.  Towards the end of last season I realized that approach was costing me shots and started to incorporate more wedges and other clubs around the greens so I answered 5.

5+ clubs.  3W or 3H for long putts from off the green; 7I-UW for chips/bump and runs; 54 degree wedge for most pitches or shots over hazards (and also most greenside bunkers); 58 degree wedge for shortsided pitches/chips and some bunker shots.  Most often I play by the saying, "Putt if you can; chip if you can't putt, pitch if you can't chip".

90% of the time it's either my PW or 56* SW. My buddies laugh at me though, because I'll usually bring all 4 wedges and sometimes ab 8-iron with me. Better to have the clubs and not need them than to not have the right club and either play a shot that I'd rather not, or waste time going back of the right club....

For me it's always a wedge, either a 56 or 60. I never really used a long iron to chip around the green. For me it was more difficult to chip it with a long iron, it makes very little sense I know lol.

It depends a lot on the turf conditions.

If it's a well-trimmed course, I use an 8i or PW for chip shots, and a PW or SW for short pitches (SW if little green to work with).

If it's course that circles the green with shaggy rough, I'll chip with a PW or a GW, and hit short pitches a SW or LW.

And, if I'm 10 feet off the green in a tiny moon-crater, I'll use a putting stroke with a 7W run it up onto the green.

If a course has closely-cut grass around the greens, I'll sometimes putt from off the fairway or fringe. I'm cautious about this, because a clump of weeds or a moon-crater can deflect the ball severely off-line.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I will also use hybrids around the green.  Sometimes the distance control is not there, but most of the time it gets the job done.

Me too.  I use a 5 hybrid to putt (that's right putt) from just off the green.  That's because I was never very good and judging distance trying to use the putter off the green and this change seems of have fixed the problem for me.  Up to about 5-8 yards off the green and no trouble in front of me.  While I don't recall ever using a longer club than the 5 hybrid for the 15-20 yards off the green I have used almost all the shorter ones at times depending upon the situation.

Generally just my 56 or 60 as I prefer to play a lofted shot, but on some occasions I may opt to chip which can be any iron in the bag depending on how much roll I want to play.

HA, I picked 5... My buddies laugh at me "You should unstrap your bag"....  I carry about 4 clubs and my putter to my ball if I miss the green.

I may putt with a hybrid, chip with a 9, bump and run a 6, flop a 56*...   It depends on the lie, the read, the green speed....   I never really know what I'm going to do until I get to the green...   Bad thing is, that when I carry my 4-5 clubs, it's usually the one I left in the bag that would have been the right choice lol...

PS...  In all honesty, I would be better off sticking to two clubs and dialing those in...  Sometimes we can try to get to fancy and it's really not needed lol...

I am working on chipping (meaning pretty close to the green - ball runs more than it carries) with Runyan approach so will use putter through hybrid. I've heard of folks using fairway woods, but with the Runyan grip the butt of the fwy woods and driver end up anchored in my solar plexus.

I like using less loft to send the ball further, because I feel like it is easier to be more precise with the touch to reach a landing spot that is closer to me and factor in the green slopes like a putt. Will send it longer in the air sometimes depending on lie & green shape.

Last year it was the wedges, so far this this year it's been the pitching wedge. Using it like a putter 10 to 15 feet off the green.Other than that I use the clubs in 10-15 yard increments-thats all I got

    • hey guys, sorry about the kind of short notice, but i'm not going to be able to make it to the outing this year....
    • Had to correct the distance - should have read 5,400 not 5,500  yds.
    • Had to report this one - played Minnesott again today with my son.  We played behind the Friday Men's group and had a decently paced round.  My round started off par-par-bogie.  I was feeling good to be +1 through three.  Played the next two par - par and then disaster hits - well I thought it may be the unravelling of +1 through five.  Tee shot on six is a hard pull hook into the ditch separating four and six.  I know the ball is lost and re-tee - hitting three off the tee on this par five.  Long story short - what should have been at worst a bogie became a triple 8.  Now I'm +4 through six holes.  Get a solid par on seven (which I celebrated as a solid recovery hole).  Eight is a birdie and I'm back to three over.  Nine, a par 3 over water, finishes par for a 39 front.   We roll to the back to where I birdie ten (the toughest hole on the back) to be -1 after the first hole on the back, +2 for the round.  Par eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen - that was an in the zone moment.  Have to note that fourteen - the second par 3 on the back - I hit the tee shot just short right of the flag.  Easy pitch with the 56 should put me close for a tap in par.  It does not happen - as I duff the pitch to about 3yds closer.  I reset and this time I nip it nicely only to see it land and slowly roll to the cup and drop in for a chip-in par save ( a first).   We get to sixteen and I am thinking this could be a really good round.  It's also a par 5 and I hit a solid tee shot.  I'm about 220 from the center of the green and figure I can layup with the 3w as there is a nice landing area in front of the green and it would play nicely into the typical distance I hit this club.  I'm sitting about 50 yds from the flag to the right hand side.  I overcook the 56 and see the ball bounce off the back of the turtle green.  I hit an easy 56 again to see the ball roll to the other side of the green.  Long story it became a 3putt double.  Now I am +4 through sixteen.  The last two holes are solid pars - one an up and down, the other a GIR two putt. Finished the back 1 over at 37.  Total score is a 76!  A new personal best.  Best "all around" play through the bag to date.
    • Day 562, May 17, 2024 Spent a LOT of time on GEARS stuff today, so while waiting for imports, exports, and all manner of things, I did some rehearsals in the mirror and camera in my basement.
