Far and away, the most telling statement in there is the bold.  You make it sound like we're going to hell in a handbasket, but you're happy to be along for the ride.  As am I.

My dad's traveled the world pretty extensively due to his job. He says there is no place he rather live than here in the US. We still have it way better than any country in the world.

Even if we are going to hell in hand basket. That hand basket is WAY better than any other countries hand basket :-D

In fairness though, the goal of common core IS to try and better teach core concepts to our children.  It may not be as effective yet as they hoped, but it's not for lack of trying.  It's not bad because it has a catchy name.  And I'm willing to bet that they didn't spend that much time or energy just coming up with the name.

Common Core is horrible. All these programs try to do is standardize teaching methods thinking every student can conform and learn like every other student. Each student learns differently, reacts differently. Basically it's just being lazy.

It's like golf right. A good teacher will find what works best for each student so they have the tools to be a better student and to maximize their learning potential. Common Core is like Leadbetter's A-Swing. It just says, "Every one do this so you all suck the same".

Despite not encountering any Trump fans it's clear people on the street are tired of the status quo.

All that really tells me is that they prefer Sanders to Clinton.  Colorado is a liberal state, and has been for quite some time.  A few districts elect Republicans to Congress, but statewide the liberals rule.  Given that, I'm not surprised that you would hear more talk about the Democrat side of the campaign.  You really aren't that far from the People's Republic of Boulder. ;-)

What are you basing this on?  Because if it's the viral photos on facebook of pictures of homework, then I believe your ire is misplaced.  Those things are still due to teachers' failings, not the concepts.  Not to say that the concepts are without flaws, but things are going OK as of now with our school and our teacher.

We were never "independent", we just controlled them with an iron fist. :-D

That kind of thinking is over now, it's all about negotiating fair terms with everyone. This is the main reason why I think Trump is better than any of the career politicians.

This. The man can cut a deal, and if we are going to make any changes some real deals are going to have to be made. Not PR type "deals" but real, behind the scenes type deals. This guy knows how to get it done. He has said on numerous occasions that he would start negotiating the next budget the day after the previous one passes.

Two things.

First, a lot of folks are simply afraid to support Trump publicly. I have seen this many times. Some people have such a nasty, visceral reaction to him that publicly supporting him and really open you up to some ridicule. This is unfortunate, but true, I have seen it many times.

I am starting to publicly support him and just this morning I as told to "f*** off" by a coworker, no joke.

Secondly, this is still primary season, once the general election hits and people are faced with Hillary v. Trump he will become even more appealing, I live in MI, a typically liberal state, and Trump leads in all of the polls. He is going to appeal to a lot of Dems who are repulsed by Hillary.

Again not sure you are correct here. He still has the worst unfavorable rating of any candidate. Of the top contenders for the GOP he's polling the worst versus Clinton.

You are wrong about the polls,

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/mi/michigan_trump_vs_clinton-5533.html

Clinton is averaging +5.2 versus Trump in Michigan polls. The only poll he leads, by +1, which is negligible is the very conservative Fox news station in Michigan.

I was in Denver last night staying at a posh hotel so I didn't have to drive home after the Black Sabbath concert. Work night so hotel bar crowd was a mix of diners waiting for a table and happy hour downtowners, lots of suits.

I am not getting that impression. Before Trump started with his antics I knew several people that were considering him. Now not one of those people have anything good to say about him.

My guess is he will start to fade. Though I'd love it if he made it to the end and won. Doesn't matter who it is the POTUS is always meet the new boss same as the old boss once they land in office. They aren't the be all, end all supreme ruler. But I'd love it if people like Rush Limbaugh and Fox news had someone to bitch about that ran on a red ticket.

I find that hard to believe. Trump would be like any president and issue an executive order. If he doesnt he is either plain lying or has not idea of the inner working of the presidency.
if he failed to issue an EO he would be the 1st POTUS since  William Henry Harrison , to do so. The 2nd POTUS in history not to issue an executive order.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_order

I dont know where this idea that a EO is bad. Reagan issued  381 , which is more than Bush, Clinton or Obama!

If if I remember correctly didn't St Reagan's Star Wars program cost 130 billion dollars, which is still way more than Bernie's free public College.

Trump will issue an executive order the first time Congress tells him "no", which sounds like often.

These polls are from 10/31! A lot has changed since then. I'm not sure there are new ones showing head to head, I saw one once, I'll look for it.

People have been saying that for six months! Still hasn't happened, he continues to gain momentum. Keep the faith! Unless the GOP consolidates on a diff candidate soon Trump is going to run away with the nomination.

This is all OT by the way,
but I graduated my university in 2008.  I had friends, when I was a freshman, that couldn't solve simple equations and fractions.  They had to take Math 99.  I couldn't believe it when I saw that.  Kids are getting into college with a 5th grade math education...  Is this a problem with teachers, the students, or concepts?  All the above is more likely the answer.  My dad, now retired, taught high school AP Chemistry but also taught general chemistry.  Teaching one class nuclear chemistry and the next trying to get kids to write a simple chemical reaction and solve the multiplication problem.  What he found was that, for the general chemistry kids, he needed to find a way for the parents to be more involved in their child's learning, but also that using word problems was far more effective at teaching than using only numbers.  Math classes in high school, except for higher levels of math like calculus, only really gave us numbered problems, not a lot of word problems.  This starts in elementary school, by forcing kids to do math in their head with no calculator.  Once that calculator comes out, learning basic math gets a lot slower.  My parents grew up, as most of you probably, with slide rules, no calculators. From a teaching view, I think they had it better off than today.  Today, kids are given calculators from day 1, so they never learn the concept until someone forces them to do a problem without a calculator.  The concept is there, sure, but not taught properly.

Fair enough, it was a lazy rebuttal. The point was that Reagan was involved in some pretty shitty stuff and anyone who is going to suggest Hillary should go to jail while lauding the great achievements of Ronnie, is being pretty selective in their reasoning.

Education wise, we haven't kept pace with other countries and have lost ground to others. If projections are correct the next generation will be the first to have it tougher than their parents.  The children are entitled, expecting to be handed things rather than work for them, the generation of participation trophies.

While there certainly are some young'uns who feel an inordinate amount of entitlement, it has a lot more to do with republican (and Conservative in Canada) policies that have decimated the middle class in order to provide bigger feeding troughs to the elite. Economic disparity isn't caused by bratty kids. Trickle down economics don't work for anyone but the guys at the top.

In any case, I'm out. I recognize that this is a US issue and I shall leave you all to it. Back to golf.

Agree that we're OT, and it's mainly my fault :8), but I don't have any problem with anything you say here.  It actually sounds like its PRO common core?  Common Core is brand new so all of the kids you are talking about wouldn't have been exposed to it, and it's absolutely attempting to get kids to understand word problems and thinking and reasoning better than the old way, which showed them memorization and "tricks."  (By "tricks" I mean

Also, they don't have calculators in first or second grade.  They're learning simple addition and subtraction without a calculator.

Anyways, I don't have much fear of Trump (or Hillary or Cruz.  OK, I do fear Cruz a bit:-P) because of our system of checks and balances.  We all bluster when the other party is in office about how horrible everything is and how great its going to be again when our party is back in office, but in reality, nothing much is really all THAT different each time.  We all have pretty good lives that generally continue to get better and we have to search for things to really complain about.  I don't see that changing much anytime soon.
