Conning myself about how bad I really am...Play a course (The Oaks in Pass Christian, MS) and shoot a 105, lose 5 or 6 balls.  Course pretty tight with lots of trees/briars along the fairways.

I then play a round at Pinewood in Slidell, LA and shoot a 94.  Difference is that Pinewood is pretty open...you can miss a fairway, end up in an adjoining fairway and still have a shot at the hole you are playing.  So, if I believe that I improved 11 strokes, I am conning myself....

In reality bout 40% my drives go fairly straight and fairly long, most of the other 60% stay in play by either 1) pure luck or 2) they're too short to reach trouble. In my mind the split is about 80/20.

Then I think, "if only I could drive it straight I'd score well." In reality, I went to a local par 3 with my daughter where the longest hole was 100 yds, I still played bogey golf.

I'm pretty sure 129, 5'9 is on the "underweight" side of the BMI scale. Someone can look it up but I'm not going to lol.

Ha! It's actually at the low end of a healthy weight. I can't begin to think why a predominantly American forum would consider a healthy weight to be too low. Just kidding. I AM too skinny. A healthy weight for my height would be closer to 140. Back to the topic, I think my 7 carries close to 135, but I'd love to hit my driver further. Would I be conning myself if I hoped to get it to 260 consistently without adding bulk to my physique?

Probably, adding weight or muscle will only help you so much. Going to see more improvement working on mechanics than bulking.

I'm conning myself when I say "I'll just play my own game, and not care if I get beat by my playing partners."

Or, "I'll just enjoy the day, no matter how bad I play"

Or, " Yep, that's the 'feel' I was looking for. If I just do that for the rest of the round, I'll be sweet."

And, final and largest con :- "I know I'm improving because of all the effort I'm putting in!!"

I thought of this thread the other day playing a short but tough course, tight fairways and very fast greens.

One guy in our usual group thought we should play the tips, because the whites were too short and we're getting "good enough" to consider moving back.

It was a con, the other guy in our group and myself thought it was nuts, we're not good enough, not even close.

But we played a couple of holes and did OK at best, so he conceded it was a bad idea and we moved up.

The thing is he has length, but it's spotty, he can get hot and rattle off some birdies, but it's spotty, and that's where the con creeps in- small successes give players delusions, more so in golf than many other things it seems, not sure why but golf is a self-conning hobby for many.

It depends doesn't it how much you want to improve. I love golf at this time of my life because it's relaxing and slower paced than my busy exhausting life. I will take pictures of the wildlife sometimes when I'm on my own. Also it's a skill and as my skill level rises so does the enjoyment of the game. I would always have a fair idea of when I had 3 putted a green or missed and iron or hit a ball OB. Because I hit shots I would consider serviceable I overestimated my ability rather than conned myself. Now I have an app to track stats on the way round. Wow what an eye opener. The numbers don't lie. It's cold hard facts but it has me thinking seriously about shot selection and specific shots that will impact my score. I agree with you a lot of guys I have played with just won't do it. As I have found out I'm a quiet relaxed person on golf rounds but it doesn't stop some having a go at my serious competitive approach as it appears. Really it's an excuse so they can keep conning themselves or live in denial about their own golf. I say enjoy it but I really respect players who excel and find that inspiring rather than threatening so I don't want to con myself

"I think I got it!"   - that's the most oft repeated con for me.

"I think I can improve further" - 2nd most recurring con.

It has been a 6+ year of roller coaster ride - many "I got it" and "I am getting better"s followed by "I thought I got it" and "ok, this is only a step back."

I was thinking about this, and I think one thing everyone on this site seems to subscribe is to feel bad about every shot you make and think that you are the worst possible golfer out there. This way you're at the bottom all the time and never experience that roller coaster ride and can just focus on your swing improvements.

Golf is actually quite humbling, even without a peanut gallery sneering at you. So, it's quite possible that the above self deprecation works for many people.

A good shot could always have been better, a regulation par could have always been a birdie, no matter how well you do on the course you could have done better. Up to a point of course. :smartass:

I fall victim to this at times. It mostly happens when I have a good round and assume that the good round is due to successfully changing my swing instead of simply having a good timing day. It's usually a slap in the face the next time I go out and play.

This is one of the reasons I don't pay much attention to individual scores. I like to see the overall range trending downwards, but the odd low round isn't really a good indication of how I'm improving.

I was thinking about this, and I think one thing everyone on this site seems to subscribe is to feel bad about every shot you make and think that you are the worst possible golfer out there.

I don't agree with that and I'm not really sure from where you got this impression.

Who here has conned themselves into thinking that that "New Driver" is going to help them? Or that new iron set/premium ball/etc.

Whenever I go to stores, there's always someone that is convincing themselves or their friends to buy this latest club or whatever because it will be sure to improve their game. Advertising is an amazing thing.

    • "Positional" shots? How do we do that? I am using the V3 and edit on my laptop.
    • No, I'm not talking about "six footers uphill, slightly right to left." I'm going to indulge myself and talk about my favorite putts that I've ever hit. In no particular order… #9 at Whispering Woods The hole was cut middle left, and I was back right with about 40 feet to the hole, and six to eight feet of break. @DrizZzY (he'll be a semi-common theme here) was about 25' from the hole and he said "Do you need me to mark that" as his ball was really close to my line. I saw the line really, really clearly and, like the cocky jerk I am, said something like "no, leave it. I think I have to just miss your ball to make this." I saw my ball as having to pass within a few millimeters of his ball… and going in the middle. Well, I hit the putt, and as it passed his ball missing it by maybe 1.5cm… I said "ahhhhh, pulled it a little…" and… the ball fell in the left-center of the hole. I smirked at Sculley and he just said "you're such an ass." 🤣 I know I said in no particular order, and that might be true for the rest… but this one is clearly tops on my list. I saw the line so clearly, it was a touchy, delicate putt… and I knew I'd pulled it just that little bit, and my speed was perfect. His ball was fifteen feet from mine, and the putt broke 8'! Might be the greatest putt, given the call I made, I'll ever hit. #13 at Lawsonia Links I cared about a few rounds in Wisconsin on our 2021 trip (thanks again @cipher), and the 13th had gotten me a bit. I was in a bunker, and someone not NOT named @DeadMan had told me I could just chip a 7I out and still be fine… well, the 7I left me 250 in, so my 3W finished just left of the green… and about 10' below the green. I hit a decent pitch to 25' or so… this putt broke only about 2-3', but burying that one was satisfying as it kept my "no sixes in Wisconsin" streak alive. It was after this putt that someone said something like "You remember how you said you felt about Tiger at the 1997 Masters? That's how we feel right about now." It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. 😄 #14 at Whispering Woods Two putts are tied here. On one, Sculley and I hit tee shots to a back hole near the front of the green. I was a foot off the front, he was a few feet on. As we were getting back into the cart, I said "putting contest from here." He replied "Well, I lost." I made the 75-footer. The other time, the pin was front-left. I was mostly middle right, barely on the green, putting across it from about 65 feet. The putt broke a good ten feet. Sculley was short left of the hole, and for the last 20 feet of the putt, I looked at @DrizZzY and the face he made — disgust, annoyance, resignation — as the putt tracked directly toward and eventually into the hole was one of the funniest and most satisfying expressions I've ever seen on the golf course. I watched him, not my ball, for the last 15-20 feet of its roll. Sorry Sculley! #9 at Tan Tara Golf Course It was my 77th stroke in my second round of the PAT. It was a ten-footer, broke a few inches, and was destined for the bottom of the cup the instant I hit it, all to pass the PAT on the number in my first attempt. (Tan Tara is now Pendleton Creek.) #17 and 18 at The Old Course, St. Andrews On the 18th, I hit it to about four feet from about 40 yards out, up and over the Valley of Sin, from the fairway. I didn't even really consider chipping or pitching it, because who does that? Not there, not me. On #17, I had about a 15 or 18 footer, after playing a 6I from 180 that flew (on purpose) only about 90 yards, and took about 15 steps to run over humps and hollows before coming to a stop on the right portion of the hole. My caddie said "I see only one or two birdies a year on the Road Hole, so, well done." Lifetime scoring average on 17 at the Old: 3. I'll take that. Far Hole (#?), Putting Course at Streamsong Black @kpaulhus and I were screwing around. Calling out holes, and tee locations. I walked over to the fringe of the nearby green on the Black course… We putted from the fringe in case we scuffed the ground a bit. Well, I chose a putt from the fringe to the far side of the 18-hole putting course. In Google Earth, I measured the putt just now at nearly 400 feet. As in… 130 yards. I hit the stick. My ball stopped less than two feet from the hole. The other diners let out a loud shout when I smacked it, and looked way over at me and yelled out "it hit the stick!" Kyle lost that hole. And most of the other ones. 😉  Some stats: Count: 8 Shortest: 10 feet. Longest: 130 yards. Average length: ~93 feet. But, y'know… Those are my favorite putts. What are yours?
    • I have one still sitting in a box my son gave me for Christmas.  For a while, I used an app on my watch, but it drained the phone battery . We have Markers at 180 ,135 and 90M , and generally I am close enough to one of them to get a fairly rough indication of how far.  Also, for a while now ,I walk into town and back at weekends, approximately 5 mile round-trip . I’ll start a walk on my watch, and on the way home when the watch ticks over to .10/.90 etc I’ll pick a street light ,lamp post , sign , and guess how far, normally anything up to about 100 m, I have now got very good at estimating distances, especially up to 50 or 60M.
