The Newport Cup is a Ryder Cup style event pitting a team from the western half of the U.S. under the captaincy of @mvmac against a team from the eastern side of the U.S. under the captaincy of @iacas .

Tomorrow starts three days of matches: two days of both fourball (best ball) and foursomes (alternate shot). The last day will be singles matches.

All matches will be scored as a nassau: match play with one point available for the front nine, back nine, and the total match play for a total of 18 points on each of the days. 27.5 points will be needed to win the 2015 Newport Cup.

Blue (East Coast) Team

Beautiful Moon Valley CC is hosting the event, site of Annika Sorenstam's famous 59 during the second round of the 2001 Standard Register PING Championship.

Our sponsors for this event are:

  • PING - makers of some of the finest golf equipment on the planet.
  • Moon Valley CC - Our host course and, as mentioned above, the site of Annika Sorenstam's record-setting 59 round in 2001.
  • TRUE Linkswear - The shoe that's revolutionizing golf, with its minimalist, zero-drop, low-platform, technology and styling.
  • PURE Grips - The best grips in the world, made from PURE rubber, with easy-on, easy-off no-tape installation.
  • KickX - Makers of the KickX Tour Z Golf Ball, one of the longest, softest balls on the market today.

Matches for tomorrow. Morning matches are fourball (best ball).

Afternoon matches are foursome (alternate shot)

First stop today was to PURE Grips.

Then we visited PING Headquarters.

All players got an awesome surprise with new Hoofer bags with their names on the bags.

And team uniforms thanks to LinkSoul apparel ( 3 shirts and 2 pairs of shorts).

Players also received TRUE Linkswear shoes, Mission Belts and a dozen Kick X balls

Opening tee shots.

Had a great time visiting PURE and PING today. That gold putter vault really takes the cake.

The most important thing is for neither team to disgrace their side of the Mississippi River by cherry picking good balls from the range. Go Team East !

First tee flyover. Tee off in 45mins, if my time zone math is right.

Edit: Scorecard added:

Ooh to even think such a thing! :-D

Maybe someone should have arranged for only worn range balls with cracks in them, even the field a little.

I'll update hourly or thereabouts. If I see a big update via Twitter, I may chime in with another scoreboard update.

Is this a correct translation of @ to name?:

Blue (East Coast) Team

Red (West Coast) Team

I'm pretty sure that's right, but could have one or two wrong. Well, I guess it's impossible to only miss one!

    • Day 15 - 2024-10-15 Mirror work. Watched one of my D1 players play today (67, plus -1 on the two holes he played to finish up a second-round 72). Well, you know what to work on… 😄
    • Day 166 (15 Oct 24) - Worked with the 6i into the net today.  Focused on the legs - slight knee bend, keeping pressure on lead foot, getting rotation thru contact.
    • No. The Steelers aren't paying either of them very much. They're not gonna get rid of a SB winning QB in case Justin is injured or something.
    • It could be to exhibit for trade bait.   Some teams may be looking for another QB (Miami) and if Wilson plays well, the compensation could be large.
    • Ball strike is king. You hit with a glancing blow (hook or slice), your smash factor just decreases a ton. Having a face to path angle of like 20 degrees versus something like 3 degrees is huge.  Yea, getting in shape is a good idea all around. Power is moving something heavy really fast. So, increasing how much you can lift, then improving on how fast you can move it will improve your power. In general, I think the two biggest tests for distance is like a chest press and standing vertical high jump. Some people are gifted with fast hands, but having good lower body can amplify what you have. Using the ground the correct way really ramps up the rotation speed, and then that can get the clubhead moving faster. Still, the hands do get down from the top of the backswing really fast.  If you start gaining strength and power gains. Knowing how to use the ground properly is important. You can have all the leg strength, but if you are not activating it correctly it is a waste. That is where good mechanics come into play.
