I don't know if it's just that I'm at that stage in my life where I have lots of excess $$$$$, or if it's that I'm having a true mid-life crisis.  Whatever it is, it's Golf related!

Starting last fall I went on a Golf spending spree that looks to be finally coming to an end - even my wife is starting to ask what's up.

My question to you fellow golfers is:  Am I just rolling in the cash/money now, and don't know what to do with it - or is it that I'm having a true mid-life crisis?

Since late last fall, here's the truthful facts of what I've bought:

1) TaylorMade R15 Driver and 3 Wood

2)  Ping I25 5- Wood

3)  Ping G 30 Irons UW to 4 Iron

4) Scotty Cameron 2014 Masters Notchback 2 Putter.  And another Scotty Cameron Titleist Golo S5

5) Ping Tour Bag & a Super Light Weight "Ogio" Carry Bag

6) Couple of new gloves - a Titleist and a Footjoy Stasof - I feel like I need another back-up

7) 2 new pairs of Adidas Golf shoes, both Adipur - Brown and White.  Another pair of black Oakley Carbon 2

8)  A total of 9 dozen Titleist Pro V 's and pro v -x's

Ask your self this. In 20-30-40 years (depending on your current age) will you be able to retire comfortably, and the excess money you are spending wont be needed when you do decide to quit working.

To my way of thinking, 70-80% of any extra money should be saved and/or invested for any future rainy days.

Have a financial plan.  Pay into your retirement fund first.   Then you can spend whatever is left over without worrying about it.

Why in the world did you buy 9 dozen golf balls?

No kids here, but I've gone (still going) through the midlife crisis and for me was a much more involved thing than just spending money. Are you looking for fulfillment in your life and trying to fill it with an activity and the rush of buying new stuff?

That equipment is an investment in your future.   Look at the crystal ball and you'll see your scores getting better because of the new equipment.   Next year you won't have to spend that much $$.

I think it's great. Buy some more!

Disclaimer: Whenever someone, who's not a close friend or family, asks me if they should spend on something, I always say yes. Here's why:

1. Consumer spending is a critical part of our economy, so I like to do my part in encouraging others to spend.

2. They may be showing off, or I may be jealous. In either case I want them to keep spending so they eventually regret it, which would make me feel better.

3. They probably just want confirmation, and are going to keep spending anyway, why deny them what they want?

So, spend & enjoy!

Mid-life crisis usually involves expensive cars and other desperate attempts to retain your youth, not golf equipment.

At this point I'd say you built yourself a nice golf bag and accessories so there's not much to worry about (unless you went into debt to do so).  If you go on to add more clubs and iron sets then you could be headed towards becoming a club ho.  Report back in a month with a list of you new purchases.

Lots of money on the arrows... won't help if you don't spend it on the Indian shooting those arrows. "Game Improvement Clubs" won't make you any better.

At first I thought I was going to read 5 new drivers with premium shafts, a golf cart for the garage, PXG irons for the whole family, etc.  All you did was a full bag update, nothing superfluous at all (maybe 2 Scotty Camerons is a bit much).  You don't hold a candle to half of golfwrx.

I have always believed it is best to invest in quality products that will hold their value, and serve their purpose as long as possible.......however!

when it comes to golf gear, I believe the "quality" products are not necessarily the most expensive. Come on we are talking metal and plastic components here made to be swung and effectively transfer energy to the ball in a consistent and repeatable manner. I believe club manufactures got that design down pat years ago and now use marketing to continue to increase prices without really delivering a more quality product.

I am excited for you with the new equipment...I do the same with fishing gear, and sometimes it does help mentally to look down and say I have the most bad A** gear available the only excuse I have not to do well now is on me as the operator. Just know you have good equipment and in a few years just because new variations come out doesn't mean yours are obsolete.....ben Hogan did pretty good with blades and wooden heads so we can not blame bad shots on equipment!

Unless you are a club ho, or on your way to becoming one, all the OP says to me is a golfer bought a complete new set for himself.  Admittedly two putters, two gloves and particularly 9 dozen golf balls sounds a bit excessive but not so bad I guess.  @The Slapper, go ahead and sell your existing equipment or keep it as a back up set for travel / visitors etc and it makes sense.  If not, it sounds like purchasing equipment to fix your game when you should be taking lessons instead

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Tour 900 golf ball

Pretty easy to lose several balls a round on a tight course surrounded by bush or water.

IMHO, not "instead" but in addition to what he already did. Getting properly fit is pretty important. I assume he did that getting all new gear that appears to be appropriate for his current handicap.
