Yeah, I would have liked to have seen a better field myself. On the other hand, what do the best players in the world have to fear?

I don't think it's fear, it's close to The Masters, the course isn't well liked by the pros and the purse isn't as big as a lot of the other tournaments, that's likely why the field isn't great.

Agree, the purse is the deciding factor.

I would say it's not the purse, imo.  The purse is 6.2m with 1.1m to the winner.  That's not the highest but it's not low.  Plus there's still 500 fedex points.

The date is certainly a factor - but they've moved it around and it hasn't really changed the field that much.  When they had it before the masters, Rory showed up.

In my opinion - it's the venue that's the largest factor.

Anyway - though . .I'm sorry for getting us too distracted from the topic of the thread.  I would definitely tell him - not your fault, stupid course.  Even if that's not 100% correct . .it's close enough and that's the thought I think will best prepare him for his next event.  Now, if he doesn't perform in that one, either - then I probably wouldn't say the same thing.

Ricky Barnes is -11 and there are 11 guys are at -7 or better so I'm not sure you can blame the course for his not making the cut.  He could have just had a bad week or be mentally exhausted from the last few weeks but it's not like he was up against the best of the Tour this week either.

I don't think he needs to panic or that his failure to make the cut is some indicator that he's not good enough to make it on the Tour but I don't see how you can blame the course when others are playing well on it.

Again, the course plays tougher than most he will play. Telling a Pro that it is a stupid course because it plays tough, is a cop out.

I think the players don't like it because of how they made it hard versus being a challenging layout. There are a lot of great challenging layout courses. Risk versus reward, elevation changes, dog legs, etc., make a course challenging and interesting. This one is more just "make it narrow, long and have easy places to lose your ball and have unusual greens." I think the Texas Open is worthy of something special and this course could use improvements in that regard.

It's too long, it's too narrow, the woods lining the fairways are too dense to play recovery shots out of, and the greens are not receptive to approach shots. Sounds too tough to me

Sounds like the courses I play. The woods are automatic unplayable. Nothing like many of the courses on tv where the grass under the trees is cut to the same height as the regular rough.

So I guess the good news is Bryson is beating US Open Champion Webb Simpson on his home course?

Bryson seems to play better when he's at the center of attention.  I guess it's tough to go out there and grind week after week.

Yeah . .I wouldn't call Quail Hollow a stupid course . .2nd missed cut in a row.  I was hoping to watch him this weekend.  Didn't watch Thursday or yesterday.

So Bryson's next events will be the Nelson and Colonial.  Being an SMU guy, I would expect him to make the cut and finish well in both events.  He basically needs 3 more top-10s or 2 top-5s to get temporary membership.  I think he'll use his 3rd exemption at the Nelson, meaning he'll have 4 sponsor's exemptions remaining plus any events he plays his way into.

If he can finish well at Nelson and Colonial (a top-10 and top-25), then we can expect to see him at Memorial, St. Jude, Congressional, and Greenbrier before he burns through his sponsor's exemptions.  I think he'll earn enough points at that point to get temporary membership IF he can take advantage of DFW.

His case is even stronger if he qualifies for and makes the cut at Oakmont.  Anyone know what his plans are for local qualifying?

The Columbus sectional after the Memorial, I'm assuming. That's how he qualified last year.

Looks like Bryson is starting to learn the grind of being a PGA Pro.

DeChambeau still adjusting to life on Tour

After bursting onto the professional scene last month, Bryson DeChambeau quickly realized that every week won't be quite as easy as his T-4 debut at the RBC Heritage.

DeChambeau missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open the following week, and he also missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month. As he readies for another start this week at the AT&T Byron Nelson, the NCAA and U.S. Amateur champ admits he's still getting used to the play-for-pay scene.

"The last couple events, it's golf," DeChambeau told reporters Tuesday. "I'm still young, still learning, still figuring out how to get this thing going and, you know, not everybody plays their best every single week."

DeChambeau benefited from a self-described "internship" of sponsor invites to professional events earlier this year, and he made the cut at the Masters in his final amateur start. But since contending at Harbour Town, DeChambeau has failed to break par in any of his four subsequent competitive rounds, and he still has work to do with his five remaining sponsor invites in order to earn his PGA Tour card for next season.

The 22-year-old hopes that success will be the product of a more relaxed approach this week in Dallas.

"It's still tough for me because I'm an emotional guy, and I try to take the emotions out of it," he said. "I said that in past times a couple times before. I'm not perfect. Nobody's perfect. I think once I understand that and say, 'Hey, look, it's OK to mess up a little bit, it's OK to fail,' and be OK with that then you're fine about it, you don't worry about things as much like I have been in the past, these past couple weeks."

Every time I watch/read an interview of his, I always think "you should have stopped talking 3 sentences ago."

I don't know the guy at all, but I think a helping of humble pie might go a long way and serve him better in the long run than if he were to earn a Tour card right away.

Send him to the Web.com Tour.
