I was thinking about all of my past rounds this past college season and I kept thinking back to the tournament this spring where my group shot 65-68-70. So that got me thinking what is the lowest score that you have been in a group with and seen? How was it memorable? What was the person's background? Are you the lowest in the group? The guy who shot 65 was memorable because he didn't miss a green all day long and was fun to see. He is now at D2 #1 Chico State. What's yours? Looking forward to hear!

The most memorable round I ever saw was a -5 66. It was also the best round of my life shooting a +1 72. He was a former club champion and his misses were barely off the green or fairway. Just very consistent on the greens and happen to find 5 pins close to the center.

Ive seen some pretty low ones, but i feel like the most impressive round I've seen was a -4 or -5 round this guy i played with shot in sectional US open qualifying a few years ago. I don't remember his name - he may have just been a mini-tour or web.com player. But he had never seen the course before that morning. Really impressive.

I have played in a couple of the pro-am tournaments that the local pro tour, The Dakotas Tour puts on.  I played with a former winner of the tournament and watched him fire off a 65.  Watching him and some of the other pros play is fun.  He shot a 65 which was best of the day and you would have thought by his reactions he was over par.  He wasn't being a baby about anything, but he just knew it could have been a more special round as he lipped out 4-5 birdie putts as well.  Those guys have a different mentality when it comes to scores, but its fun to watch them plot their way around the course when they are playing for a livelihood.

This is the same tour that Tom Hoge came and played an event in his hometown of Fargo, ND last August.  He didn't win it either, took 2nd or 3rd I think.

I haven't even seen someone hit par. I've been +1 and +2 a couple of times on 9 holes. I've played with guys in my league that have done the same. I would love to play with a low single digit or scratch player just to see it first hand.

-1 by me for 18 holes and -3 for me for 9 holes. I do sometimes get to play with players better than myself but haven't had anyone go really low yet.

Now if we are going by Net the lowest would be -11.... for 9 holes. That's what a guy shot against me during league playoffs last year. Not a fan.

Lowest ive ever witnessed is 71 twice by me.Thats saying something considering I play in tournys with very good players. My 71s were not in tourny conditions though.

I've played with guys who shot 67 or 68.

I don't know what he shot, but I was playing in the group ahead of Ed Dougherty one day many years ago. He was knocking the flags down all day long. I can't remember how many he stacked inside 10 feet, but it was more than a handful. I remember someone commenting how poor(sarcasticly) one of his shots were that stopped 20 feet from the hole. Most impressive ball striking I've ever seen in person.

My friend brought his cousin-a scratch golfer-to one of my tougher, longer locals once. First time there and he easily parred it.

Most interesting to me was his quickness off the tee. Just a quick glance at the pin, then a no nonsense swing with hardly  a waggle. Balls just magically faded long to their target.

It probably wasn't the lowest score I've ever personally seen, but the 75 a buddy of mine wrote on his scorecard was pretty memorable.

Granted it was one of the easiest courses in the area, but I had just put up an 81. My lowest score ever. This guy, who I had only once previously beat, easily took five extra tee shots and clearly forgot about another half dozen strokes a long the way. I was sure I had him that time. When he told me "good score buddy", it was a bit hard to smile.

I still play with the guy once in a while, but I treat it as strictly a practice round and pay zero attention to the score.

I've shot a 64, which is the lowest I witnessed.  When I first read the title of this thread, I was going to answer with -31 on 18 holes, but that was in my rory mcilroy video game. :-D

Years ago I had a stretch where I was playing some very good golf and was consistently shooting in the low 70s. I challenged my friend who was the defending club champion and a Div 1 college player at the time to a match straight up for a couple bucks. We went out one evening and I played better than expected and shot 71 (-1).... I lost by 8.

Lowest ive ever witnessed was a 74. The crazy part is the guy never hit anything longer than a 3 iron all day.

We've had a few guys play our club who were Web.com players and would fire 5, 6 and 7 under playing from the tips.

One impressive round was on a Monday, club was closed, golfing with the owner and one of the Web players.

There were no pins set on course (friggin kids have been robbing them) and our friend on the last hole, hits the back of the cup and the ball came to rest behind the hole for a round of 7 under for the day.

But the lowest individual round happened 20 years ago by a friend who carded a 61 with two eagles on par fives that day.

The lowest I can remember in my own group was in a Senior Club Championship a couple of years ago.  First day I shot my personal competitive best, 70, to lead.  Second day, playing with a guy who had shot 77, a good player.  He was 5-under after 7 holes, my lead gone that quick.  He ended up stumbling in to 69, still the best I've seen in my group, we tied for total, and I lost on the third playoff hole.

    • I played in an outing a few years ago. The course was wet, and it was windy. We all did bad enough to reward us with a PCC of +1 (If I am remembering this correctly). So all of our differentials went up 1.  So, if that score is part of my best 8 out of 20. That means I am getting 1/8th of a differential improvement. For you to get a PCC, you need enough people submitting their score for handicap during that day. Let's say you were the only person who was submitting the score for handicap, odds are you are not getting a PCC.  Which is fine, because no handicap system can be that nuanced. I don't think you'd want it to be. Still, my statement is correct. It takes into account weather and abnormal difficult conditions.
    • I’ve been rather surprised how my original question relating to the logic behind “differential vs course handicap” elicited the responses expressed on this thread so far. I suppose it shows that there are many who have given this subject a lot of thought. I personally like the current system for the same reasons stated in the post by saevel25 and it works very well in our league. I just needed to get the reasoning/logic clear in my head so I could explain it succinctly to those who had questions. Regarding the ongoing discussion, the only tweak we make is only the scores made in league competition count. (We don’t use GHIN, we do the calculation ourselves.) The only additional thought I had is perhaps the powers that be can come up with a method, when doing the differential calculation, of giving greater weight to the rounds played more recently than those from 20 rounds ago. I’ve been testing this with an idea I had similar to the way colleges calculate GPA’s based on credits offered by different classes, but honestly, the complexity it adds to the calculation isn’t worth the trouble as any change made has proven to be inconsequential.
