I think winning 4 majors is almost impossible in 1 year, tennis it can be done but golf  there is too much parity. If we add the Players championship to another Major this will credit a lot more deserving golfers with more major.s

in men's golf, a "major" isn't selected or created. The PGA Tour could announce "The Players" is now a major and its status in the public's mind would not immediately change.

Making the Players a Major gets brought up regularly and has been considered by the TOUR as reported several times by the media as the Players approaches. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it's not going to change.

As for more "deserving" players winning Majors, I guess that depends on what your definition of "deserving" is...I would argue that if they truly deserved to win a Major then they would...regardless of whether or not the Players was made a Major.

I don't know if you can make the Ryder Cup bigger than it is....it's easily one of the biggest weeks of the TOUR calendar each year.

I voted "no" . Not so much because I like the President's Cup, ( I don't care one way or another)  but because the current 4 majors are enough. No need for a 5th. What happens to all the previous players'  "Slams" if you bring on a 5th major? To me, The Players is just another type of WGC event.

I dont think thats a good idea.  Didnt the LPGA add a 5th Major and everyone was talking how that watered down how important they were? Or was it about Grand Slams.... I cant remember.  Something along those lines I believe.

Its has been 4 majors for years.  I say keep it like it is!

There should only be four majors. If anything, I'd drop the PGA and add The Players but I think it should stay at four.

I agree with @bkuehn1952 that a "major" is mostly public perception.

While I don't view the Players as a major, I do hold it a step up from other tournaments.

A 5th would diminish the efforts of those who played with only four. `We could pretend the Tour is like kids sports and make them all Majors so anyone who wins gets a Major. My obvious answer is no. Besides I like the match play of the Ryder and Presidents cup.

That is true, the last major added was the PGA Championship and that has been over 100 years.I think its time for one more. Too many great players out there.

Match play is great, maybe make  the WGC Match Play a 5th major. Make it 2 weeks with double elimination. This way if a golfer has 1 bad round he can still come back and win.

I didn't think it was as as important ,until i  repeatedly hear it from numerous PGA professionals that this  individual tournament is the by far the most valuable compared to any other event besides the majors.

I would bet over 95% of men golfers could't even name The 4 women's major events and cant even tell you what order they play.. I love watching women's golf as well, but their audience does not come close to the mens.

Most golfers know the order of Mens

1. Masters

2. USA open

3. British open

4. PGA championship.

The WGC Match Play can become a huge event. Matching the best players in the world heads up will help ratings immediately..

I think its time for a 5th. There has never been so many great competitors. Kids have a golf club in their hands at 5. I never played golf until I was in high school and that was for fun because it interfered with Football in the fall, wrestling in the winter and baseball in the spring..

There is so much money in this sport that parents encourage their kids to play, plus kids can get college scholarships as well.

Bottom line ,I think there is at least a 500% increase in players over the last 30 years. I'm not saying over saturate

the important tourneys ,just add 1 more..

Majors are arbitrary milestones, anyway. There used to be more than four majors, and used to be less. Back in the day, the Western Open was a major, as was the US Amateur, British Amateur, etc etc. You can't add a fifth to something that isn't codified beyond the point of "because we say so".

Move the PGA to May. April is the Masters, June is the US Open, July the Open (just like the Brits to say "THE Open, lol), and August the PGA. The Players is in May, so... I can see it as the fifth, but would prefer the PGA moved and leave Aug and Sept for whatever. As soon as football season starts, everything else is irrelevant. That's life.

The May gap between the Masters and the US Open seems long. Just a thought from the unwashed masses I represent.

I recently had the flu and was home watching Golf Channel for several days. I watched replays of The Players, The Byron Nelson, and a couple of others.. It seemed to me all the big names were there.

When I had the Golf Channel, I would watch everything... Men's, Women's, Seniors and even the Euro Tour.  I can never get enough golf.

I have even played Sat and then Sun and wanted to play on Mon again!

Most guys cant crush it like the pros do.... who hits a PW 150?  Watching the ladies can help you to work on course management.  Especially the ones who don't hit it wicked long.

Like all statistics, the number of Majors a player wins is a way to compare careers from different eras.  I'd hate the comparison of Jack or Arnold or Ben to a player in the "new age" who has a chance to win a Major 5 times a year.  There's no doubt that the strength of field has changed, and will continue to do so, but to me that doesn't justify expanding the list of Majors.  Adding a 5th Major, simply because there are more good "deserving" players seems to be heading down the road to awarding "participation prizes" to everyone.  Good players don't "deserve" to be called a Major winner until they actually win a Major.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
