Best Shot of the Week

Par 4 15th at Rock Barn's Jackson Course... I hit a good drive into the right side of the fairway and I had about 170 down the hill to the back-left pin.  I hit a towering 6 iron that never left the stick.  It landed about 10 yards beyond the pin and settled on the back of the green.  My putt from 32 feet away didn't curl all the way down to the right and settled on the lip.

Being the #2 handicap hole, it would have been very nice to have made a birdie there, but I ended my round without a single birdie.

Hit my first drive ever over 300 yds today. 308 to be precise, admittedly slightly downhill but into the wind (or maybe actually breeze). As always I picked an optimistically far point on the fairway, stepped up and somehow smoked it to exactly the point where i was aiming. When I got to the ball I took a moment to reflect on what a different game it would be if I could always hit my tee shots that far!

Won $120 on a closest to the pin today. 212 yards away, hit it to 7 feet, 1 inch. Sunk the birdie putt, too.

#17 Par 3 View from the tee:  178 yds to the pin.

The ball had a little wiggle to the right as it came to rest which seemed odd because the green slopes left in this corner!  We think I might have hit the left side of the hole and lipped-out to the right and just missed an ace!!   it's hard to see that far, so we'll never know for sure!

Oh well... I'll take the easy deuce, but I want another ace!!

There is no such thing as an easy duece for me. I would miss that putt for some reason.

195 yard 7 iron to 12 ft on a par 5 to give myself a chance to save par after jacking the first ball OB.

This is an old pic and a blast from the past.  When I was a member at Stone Canyon, they had the best quality firm/lightening fast greens of any course I have played in years.   I eventually quit the course due to fairway quality, but that's besides the point.

The greens were always fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!

Firm and Fast..................................oh yea!  IMO...the green conditions are obvious in this pic!  Tightly shaved greens.....oober slippery!!  Fast, like putting on a linoleum floor.

Was caught in the middle of a daisy patch on the edge of a bunker on 18 about 40 yds out from an elevated green. Hit that sucker to about 6 feet and made the putt for a 97....first round under 100 since early July. Could have easily seen myself taking 3 more strokes when I first saw that lie.

    • Day 9 (10 May 24) - Played 18 with a good friend and one of his coworkers.  Was not a solid scoring round, but lots of opportunites for course management. Had a blast as we truly "got our money's worth" as my friend jokingly said.  Had some solid shots and finished the round with a solid birdie on 17 (the only really good hole of the day).
    • I always wonder when people say they "tried" a golf swing out. I thought I had a topic on it, but when I searched DuckDuckGo for "trying" a golf swing or method limited to this site… "trying"+a+golf+swing+or+method+site:thesandtrap.com at DuckDuckGo DuckDuckGo. Privacy, Simplified. This very topic was the first search result. 🤣
    • I think you can get away with even a 5I or a hybrid or something. I don't think you need to hit 7I off the tee.
    • Yeah this is good to remember. Handicap is ranking where a high handicap player is most likely to shoot a worse score than a scratch golfer. Though you'd think a super narrow shorter hole would be relatively high handicap (as in close to #1 or #2 because a scratch golfer can hit 4i-SW and have a good look at birdie frequently whereas a high handicap is gonna be in jail or OB a ton? I guess it being short disqualifies it? I have long noticed that as a long hitting mid-handicapper I get an advantage playing in tournaments against players where I get 3-4 strokes because those are usually the par 5s that I can reach or nearly reach in 2.
    • Crunching the numbers, if you play the hole.. 100..1000 times, the best average of the hole you are going to get is with the Driver/Hybrid or playing it as a Par 5 hitting 3 wedges.  Assumptions of your game: Driver 240 yards (100 yards dispersion) Hybrid 200 (80) 6 iron 160 (60) 9 iron 120 (40) P wedge 100 (30)  Other assumptions from the hole: - When you hit it towards the threes 15% of your shots are going to bounce back to the fairway but 40 yards shorter, and 15% are going to remain in the threes but punchable out. The other 70% is going to be lost or OB so you need to Re-Tee (penalty + distance).   You are going to hit less balls OB if you hit 7 iron off the tee but you are still gong to hit balls OB! and you are going to play 100% of your 2nd shots from 150 yards where you can still can hit a couple more OB! The average score for each club (assuming you go for the green in the second shot) is: Driver: 5.4   Hybrid: 5.5 6 Iron: 5.9 9 Iron: 6.0 Given that 5.4 is the best average you can get, is not necessary to go for the green in two. So you can hit 3 shots to reach it, maybe P (100), P(100) and wedge (90) and be around bogey or double but with this strategy you are going to be almost 100% in play all the time to avoid a roller-coaster of scores in that hole. Scratch players can hit 150 off the tee with a 9 iron and keep the ball in play almost 100% of the time so they can play the hole as a par 4 and be around par in average.
