Very short one today. That's @NatalieB's clubface.

So here's what I'd like people to do.

  1. Mark five balls.
  2. Hit them with your 6-iron. Don't wipe them off between hits.
  3. Upload a small image* here to this topic.

Let's see 'em!

* You may have to crop or resize the image - uploads directly from your phone are going to be very large.

P.S. Be honest. There's no shame in contact that's not on the sweet spot. Mine will probably be toward the toe… :-P

On mats. Dirt/grass would wipe the mark(s) away.

This will probably have to wait for a bit as I'm not hardcore enough to go out in 18 degree weather, but I am pretty interested in doing this.

What if you hit a lot out of the center, but didn't hit with a predictable pattern? Would you glean that path is an issue, or are things not so simple?

I imagine most golfers don't hit the center very often, and if they do, they probably swing too steep.

If you're still hitting off the ground (even with a little tee), you're still going to get mud and dirt and grass on the face. If you're teeing it up so high you're not getting any turf, that's not how you hit your 6-iron.

Probably. But this is just to see where you strike the ball on the clubface. Nothing more.

I got a little lucky and hit these 5 ok. I actually think the second mark didn't show up too well, think it's a few grooves lower than the rest  I thought it would be interesting to put some flightscope numbers to these strikes so I attached a table for these 5 swings, hope that works.  The spot on the club seems a little higher than it should, maybe just how I positioned the the ball. i think I'll try this again and upload to show that these 5 were a lucky anomaly .  Using dr scholls is a little easier but less exact I guess and harder to keep track of multiple hits

Cool!  You have a flightscope?

Did you skull the 4th one?  Curious because it looks like you were coming up a couple of degrees at impact.

I used a dry erase marker this time and seemed to transfer better than a sharpie for me.

I saw that too on the aoa. You know it felt ok when I hit it so not sure what changed. Maybe it was low on the face and just didn't show up. I'm still working on my swing quite a bit so must have just put a little different move on it.

Maybe I can put a shoe insole on the grass and that will keep the swing clean but still able to get a normal descending blow on the ball. Ill play around with it.

The only thing worse than growing old is NOT growing old.  There's only one way to avoid aging, and its not one I'd choose.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
