tried it.  It did not work with a Blue Sharpie. Left no mark whatsoever.

Then you either missed that spot on the ball or you let the marker dry too much or something.

So here's some organic (relatively..) marking from the range at work today on a 6i. I think this was after about 15 or so hits.

Took one on the hosel trying to practice hitting a cut.. #theseguysaregood :-D

I got a little lucky and hit these 5 ok. I actually think the second mark didn't show up too well, think it's a few grooves lower than the rest  I thought it would be interesting to put some flightscope numbers to these strikes so I attached a table for these 5 swings, hope that works.  The spot on the club seems a little higher than it should, maybe just how I positioned the the ball. i think I'll try this again and upload to show that these 5 were a lucky anomaly .  Using dr scholls is a little easier but less exact I guess and harder to keep track of multiple hits

Yeah there is only 1 way to not grow old and that is dying young as in auto accident, robbed and killed at an ATM, etc.

This is a great idea.  I am going to augment a bit.  I will try it at the range tomorrow with a blue spot and a red spot.  Will position the blue spot on the inside and the red on the outside, that way I can tell not only how centered the impact, but also whether I am hitting more on the inside-out or outside-in.

That won't tell you about the path - just the face angle. And even a few degrees off center would be bad because a clubface that's even 10° open or closed is pretty far offline.

Let me see if I understand.  Because the ball at impact gets severely deformed both spots will appear on the club (say if I desire 1 degree inside out path), unless the spots are spaced further apart and I hit it 10 degrees inside out?

Kinda, except the inside-out part doesn't matter at all. The path is irrelevant. It's simply the clubface angle. You'll hit the back of the ball with a square clubface regardless of the clubface angle - anywhere within nearly a 180° range inside-out/outside-in.

Here's mine from today:

CLUBFACE.JPG.jpeg

Shots 1 and 3 are the toe-ward ones, shots 2, 4 and 5 are the slightly heel-ish ones.  They were all decent results too; dispersion varied about 20 yards total left to right and, I'm guessing, 10-15 distance wise.  (About 175-190 carry, I'd estimate)

First shot was the most off the heel. Best shots were the second and third swings, last shot was a little thin. My misses tend to be on the toe side.

Mostly slight heel strikes which I don't mind because I hate toe shots ;-)

I was able to do this on the range last night. A little towards the heel. Might have just been yesterday's range session since swing changes are still happening. Nice push draw shots so not anything really to worry about. Brand new range balls so I felt like a vandal putting a sharpie on them hahaIMG_1856.JPG

Been messing around a bit. Using a 4 iron, consistent hits that start 4th score line from the bottom to about 7th. Fairly centered, very slightly towards the heel. Marker dries very quickly (old), and imprints after first 2 or 3 are faint.  Six iron shows a slight more wandering off center.

This is from today; full swings at the end of a session working on the elbow drill.  Four were hit pretty solid, but out towards the toe, with one big miss (that's sort of a double-mark out there).  This is nothing surprising, since toe shots are my big mis-hit since I've been working on a new downswing piece this winter.

PS - The red sharpie looks like I murdered some tiny animal or huge insect.

I think I put too much Sharpie on the ball and let it dry too long as well.

I just saw this thread, and will try it next week, probably with foot powder. I'm betting toward the hosel strike for me.

Also, this may not apply here, but on another web forum I had no problem posting pics once I set my camera to VGA. My camera is nothing special, a Nikon Coolpix L620 that will take 5 megapixel pictures. But, you can reset it to a lot of different levels, including VGA. Thus, you don't have to resize files.

Now all I have to do is hit some balls, take some pics, and figure out how to post them here. I'm guessing I use the "Insert other media" button?
