Music on the Course - When Did This Become a Thing?

However, I used to play Angry Birds while waiting to take my shots, and I was starting to get complaints even when the sound was turned off. One gentleman was on the green with me standing less than 40 yards from the pin on a short par 4, and told me to stop playing video games on the course because it was distracting his party. Which in turn made them take even longer to play. . .

I play music quietly out of my phone when playing by myself, it stays in my pocket which muffles it quite a but and gets turned down/off if I come up to groups on a tee box or green. To me it's no different than golf clubs clanking together as people walk, carts driving by, or people having loud conversations.

With today's technology there is no reason why everyone around you has to share with you the music you want to listen to on a golf course.  There could always be some noise such as mowers or an ambulance in the distance, but my personal preference is for a relatively quiet environment for golf.  I find it relaxing and it helps me focus (at much as a 65 year old can!).  I enjoy a screaming college football game or fireworks, but on the golf course, beach, or fly fishing on a trout stream I enjoy the quiet.  If you enjoy the music, please use ear buds.

That being said, I have never run into music on the golf course being played by other golfers.

This thread could just as easily be about conversations on the course or exuberant celebrations over a good shot.  That and road noise, dogs barking, etc. all could be considered more sudden and therefore more distracting than music.  I think the objection is not about the distraction, it's about golf culture, tradition and etiquette.  

As long as it is not louder than these other sounds on a course, I'm not going to let it bother me.

Normally I will listen to music with earphones while I'm practicing, but not usually on the course. It can be very distracting at times.

Oh I have a pretty big playlist.. too big for the phone though. Now, if I put Ian Dury and the Blockheads down and you said THAT was weird I could understand. Hmm.. Rhythm Stick. That might be a good golf song. LOL

Because you need to be able to hear when someone yells fore at you or you want to converse with others in your group.

The last 6-8 weeks I have been working a lot of charity golf tournaments, and I noticed a trend...players placing a Bluetooth-type speaker in their cart and using their phone to jam music.  Pretty loudly sometimes.  It's loud enough that it has to be turned down to have a conversation anywhere near the carts.  When the carts approach the tee box, it sounds like a rolling party.

This is obviously the opposite of how I played growing up, where everyone had to be quite and not move around.  How does everyone here feel about this way of playing?  Do you do it, or have you been with a group who has done this?  Is it ok for a charity scramble, but not more serious golf?  I'd like to get some thoughts on this, because it's becoming more and more common.

It's one thing to look at it from the perspective of the golfer and another the industry.  As a golfer, I like to listen to the surrounds/nature/etc. and enjoy my round.  That being said, I am fine with music because I treat it like any other random noise on the course, something I will block out when I am over the ball.  If it's overbearingly loud, I'd ask them to turn it down, but it's rare that it's that loud.

From the industry, we have to be more open minded regarding golfers, at least those of us outside major cities who may need more players.  Most golf cart companies are adding optional speakers installed in the carts or at least usb ports for plugging them in.  I am fine with players having music so long as it does not disturb other groups.  As an industry, we need to appeal to the younger generations and that means incorporating technology, for the most part.  It could simply be a GPS unit with a sportscenter ticker/pandora music/analog tv channels.  I don't know, I haven't thought too hard on it.  But, we want to appeal to both traditional and non-traditional golfers.

I'm not opposed to playing while music is playing. Many members either wear ear buds or have BT speakers at my club.

Some oppose it while most have no objections. 

Seldom music is playing during competition rounds, but I have noticed more frequently at outings some groups are rocking & rolling with nice equipment that can be loud.
