As they should because it's newsworthy.

As others have said, sponsor exemptions are often used to generate publicity for the event, and this one is no different.  I wonder of Brittany will do better than Tony Romo did in the Dominican Republic earlier this year.  77-82 adios.

Ya know what...I like that. I’m going with that. 77-82. And there it is.

I am on the, Why Not?, side of this. Seems good for everyone and nobody, including me, expects Brittany to make the cut.  So there really isn't a down side to this for anyone, well maybe the local player that doesn't get the exemption.  Having just finished discussions of unlikely outcomes of sporting events, what if she does make the cut?  That will be news worthy even and good for the game.  Especially the LPGA.

I mean, I hope she goes out there and has fun. I'm not really interested in watching it though. I rarely watch much golf these days and watching someone with no chance of being in contention is even less of a draw for me. Publicity stunts rarely grab my attention.

Exactly.

I bet she'll do better than Romo.

With the time difference the Barbasol will not have a lot of live competition with the British Open and this move adds a bit of interest for live coverage of the Barbasol.  Not a bad move and hey, we are talking about it.

This seems unnecessary in my opinion. The Lpga has some great players. I see no need for this, it does not prove anything.

By the definition of Merit - the quality of being particularly good or worthy, especially so as to deserve praise or reward; as a professional golfer Brittany earned her spot in this event, therefore it is newsworthy.

How did she “earn” her spot? She’s a promotional opportunity. Nothing more here, in this context (PGA Tour).

And in terms of her being invited to play in this event she has done precisely zero of the above. I don't care if she plays or not. The sponsors can invite whoever they like. Just don't pretend she's there because she's an awesome golfer. It's probably a good marketing decision on their part - but they're too dumb to get a South Korean player to play  - with an audience that's actually interested. But then again, the South Koreans would see that they're on a hiding to nothing. What do they achieve by scoring 78, 77 in a men's tournament?

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲

    • Why wouldn't it have? It's not like you were playing it as a 145yd par 5 and made a 2 or something.  Or not like it was playing 50yds to a temporary green or something either.
