You're just on the first cut around the green... the flag is 50 feet away.. the first 10 feet has a downhill drop then the next 40 feet is up hill with very little break right to left

What club would you use....

what type of shot [ where do you land the ball] ...

generally how close to the hole would you expect to be with your average shot like this...

So we're about 16 yds away from the flag....

You don't say how much of a drop, but I might want to play on it a little, not much, but a little. Just enough so the ball doesn't check right away. I would pick my landing zone about 8 feet to the flag and to the right about a foot. I have to roll it 32 feet from there uphill so I'll probably use my 8 iron, and depending upon the speed of the green it should leave me within 5 feet of the hole. I don't want it to land on the uphill portion or where the grade changes.

The other way to play this is with a lob wedge and go for a flop shot, but I lack the skillz for this short of a shot.

Putt. I'd expect I can be anywhere from 3-10', most likely short. Need to work on my long lag putts.

If I could putt the ball I would. Typically that's the case from the first cut. If it were in the rough just off the green, I would take a 7 or 8 iron and get it rolling as soon as possible like a putt. The only time I would try to pitch it is if it was a last resort. Too much unpredictability.

It depends if there's any problem with putting the ball, and how much of the first cut I'd have to putt through.

Putting would most likely put me within 6 feet.

If there's anything that might disrupt the line I'd chip the ball and try landing it 10-12 feet short and a foot or two right of the flag. Then hoping that I could hit it, and that it rolled like I wanted ;) That could leave me with a 10' or more.

the first cut?  you mean the fringe?  thats a putt.  pretty much always unless the outline of the green is such that the line of a putt takes me back off the green (putting across a severe slope)

Unless there's a bunker in green it's a putt for me ;)

Long lag putts like this are tough, but I'd still use the putter. I would expect to get it within 10 ft. Almost certainly a 3-putt at my skill level.

Depends on what you mean by first cut _________.

On the fringe: I would putt it.

In very light rough : Chip with an 8 iron, landing it about 20' short of pin (depends on grade of upslope) ... or , if grass was very fine bladed, I might putt it.

Aim point for either shot: 3 feet left of cup.

How far from cup would I be on average? Hard to say, without actually seeing shot.

Focus, connect and follow through!

pick the club that will land the ball 2 to 3 feet on the green and roll to the hole.  Could be a wedge, could be a 5 iron depending on distance to the hole.  Only you can tell after you practice using this method so you know which club goes how far.   If its 50 feet to the hole and up hill and you know your gap wedge will land 3 feet on the green and roll out 46 or 47 feet.  If its up hill, use one extra club. I chip with every iron in the bag.  I want to land 3 feet on the green and roll to the hole.  Much easier to roll a ball back there than fly one close and make it stop.  Use the same line you would use if it was a putt.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
