Money game. 20 handicapper keeps failing forced carry off teebox. What do you do?

    • After 1 fail, let him take illegal drop across hazard, hitting 3
      2
    • After 2 fails, let him take illegal drop across hazard, hitting 5
      10
    • Keep making him hit, it's a money game after all

12 person tournament of friends. Index's range from 6 to 20+. Playing lots of bets, including a team/group bet of evenly balanced teams (good and bad players each team)

One teebox has a forced 150 yd carry to the fairway/"in play" area. One guy is in a bad groove and keeps coming up short.

We usually invoke a "mercy" rule here, but it's largely undefined. We don't cap strokes at double par (per hole), as we want everyone to finish out each hole.

What would you do?

Money is money. He'll have to keep at it until the hole is conceded one way or another.

That's part of the reason I stay away from money games and places with forced carries.

What kind of game?  That’s one reason to play match play.  Once someone’s out of the hole and hits their ESC, they pick up and move on.

The only reason to keep banging your head against the wall would be in a pure stroke play format.  Even then I’d tell him to move on with the understanding that he just lost all stroke play bets.

FWIW, someone who can’t carry 150 yards should probably either be playing different tees, or not be playing for money at all.

Strokeplay and money on the line, keep making him hit.

On our golf outings we play stableford, exactly to avoid situations like this. Just pick up if you can't get anymore points on that hole.

Primarily we are just a bunch of friends. Half of us played on the same (non golf) team in college, so we just like everyone involved and we all like to be competitive, relying on index's to make adjustments. We do a ton of diff bets but this year just happened to be daily nassau's and 3 day stroke cumulative play. Tbh, we got tired of ryder cup type of formats over the last few years.

On ezier courses he hits ~100... but he sometimes get in a swing "rut", where he just fats a bunch in a row, and we all just feel bad when it happens to cause him stroke and distance per.

Dang you guys are harsh!  Even though it's a money game, the money is just to make it more fun!

Cap strokes at double par. 2 balls in the water is enough to sufficiently humiliate someone. If the game is largely for fun with some $ tossed around to make it more interesting then don't crush someone's soul with making them hit into the water over and over and over.

The suggestion that not being able to carry 150yds should mean a different tee or not playing for $ is also spot on. Maybe modify the rules: "For hole X with 150 forced carry, you may hit from the reds with a ? stroke penalty."

But yeah, if it's just for fun and the $ is to spice it up, don't beat down the worst player in the group.

If you need to bet to make golf fun, maybe a more enjoyable sport would be a better choice.  I wonder if this guy just bets with the crowd to hang out.  He probably hates betting and just wants to play golf with his friends.

MERCY!   If you make him hit more than once, knowing that he's probably not getting over, then he's not having fun, You're not having fun, and the people behind you are not having fun.

he's a 20 handicap, and he's already a stroke down the the group.   just drop on the other side.

This is a question that shouldn't even need to be asked with 20+ handicaps are involved.

In the future my recommendation would be to start using a "maximum score" per hole format.  "10", double par, whatever the group feels is fair.  In this instance I would tell him to take a "10" and move on.

Yea, this or double par looks like the way to go if we stick w/ stroke play formats. The higher handicappers typically just play the team bets, no individual bets, but still net scores. All the big $, as you guys prob guessed, is for the better players.

A stableford format is a form of net stroke play that also limits the “damage” of a single blowup hole as well as providing an opportunity to pick up and move on in that event.   It might be another option to consider...

Thank you!!!

A game between friends is a game between friends, money or not. You're not playing at PGA level; there's nothing that mandates USGA rules. Remember when we were kids playing baseball and we had ghost-runners? I'm pretty sure that MLB doesn't use or allow those. We were having fun and making the most of a situation. 👍

I'm all for precision in holding to the rules when people are really competing, but if they like having the guy there, then let him play (as long as he isn't holding other groups up; that's another issue not brought into the OP).

If it’s not a tournament, the USGA handicap system limits the score you can submit on the hole.

0-9 double bogey

10-19 a seven

20+ is an eight

To not hold up play, our group would move on.

Why? I guess I see a flaw in your logic here. You don't want to cap the allowable strokes, but you are willing to consider letting the guy drop across the hazard in violation of the rules because you are feeling some mercy?

You can't really have it both ways. If the bolded part above is true, then you have to let the guy keeping hitting and hitting until he successfully makes the carry or gives up in a blind fit of rage. Personally, I would just cap the allowable strokes per hole (double par sounds reasonable) and let it be.

I’m sure you know, but to clarify, those Equitable Stroke Control limits pertain to posting of handicap scores only.  They have nothing to do with how many strokes can actually be taken on any given hole, whether tournament or not.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
