All of my immediate family has their vaccines and we were just texting yesterday with the idea of a family get together soon. We missed the last number of holidays.

I feel your pain, brother.

My parents are both high risk. Like they have pretty much every risk factor there is... except they are non-smokers. So, there's that. 
Anyhow, my parents happened to have spent Christmas 2019 vacationing without the rest of the family. So they haven't seen their grandkids (in person) since November 2019. 

They are going to be amazed when they finally see them again, how freaking big they've both gotten. By way of comparison, the last time they saw my son he wore a size 3 shoe. He now wears a size 7. Kids grow fast. Bummer for Grandparents during a pandemic.

Michigan is still making national news with the huge increases in Covid cases.   Ugh.   The last 7 day average is 5,858, the highest since September of 2020.    A local school is going back to virtual after spring break.   I am guessing that other schools will follow suit.

@Braivo, I know you've scheduled (or even gotten) vaccinated, etc. But does this all make you re-think your position on "face diapers" and personal liberties and "personal choices" and all of that? Even a little?

I wonder how much interstate travel has contributed to this too. Michigan is home to many large universities.

I know this is been said over and over, but getting vaccinated helps prevent the variants. A variant can't happen if its origin has been eliminated. Does this sound like good logic?

Not really. When a virus is widely circulating in a population and causing many infections, the likelihood of the virus mutating increases. The more opportunities a virus has to spread, the more it replicates – and the more opportunities it has to undergo changes.

I'm not sure what you read, because to me, you two said the same thing.

Every vaccinated person reduces the odds of variant strains because they reduce the "world viral load" and thus the opportunities to mutate is reduced.

I meant in the sense the origin is no longer relevant once variants have already been evolved. The new variants become sources that can mutate as well. We’ll have to continue to ‘update’ vaccines to keep pace with mutations just as we do with the flu. I guess I was saying that vaccination isn’t ‘eliminating’ the original strain as the original strain has already mutated to a variant.

Ha! I was trying to stay cool and stay out of the arguments then you go tag me and stir the pot?? 😆

First of all, I have a vax appointment for Tuesday morning. I'm getting the shot. 

Secondly, I have started calling them chin diapers when people put them down around their chins. They either put them on properly or take them off completely. Go one way or another. But yes, I regret my terminology in earlier posts. I was angry because my kids were having some tough times with cancellations, etc. 

Third, I have not idea what is driving the Michigan case numbers. We remain relatively restricted compared to neighboring states like Ohio, yet our numbers are climbing and theirs are declining. Why? I have no idea. Ohio remained open most of the winter and we did not, so perhaps it's a "catch up" of sorts. Ohio had more of a slow burn where their cases were slightly elevated all winter, now Michigan has a full blown forest fire. Why aren't wide open states like Texas seeing the same surge? 

I think the trouble is we attribute the surge in cases to either policy or compliance, when the reasons are likely far more complicated. I traveled this week to visit with a terminally ill friend in North Carolina. Hardly anyone there was wearing masks. Restaurants were packed. Etc. and their case numbers are flat. This comparison of state to state doesn't tell the whole story.

I guess what I was trying to say was that it we eliminate the original C19 virus, there won't be an opportunity for variants. Maybe I am misunderstanding something here?
