Well...

It seems like there is a large group in Michigan that think their rights are being violated and won't wear a mask even though it's now law.    Personally, I'm limiting my exposure to others and wearing a mask when I do venture out.

Masks just don't work for me worn in the standard behind the ear fashion. I already have hearing aids and glasses behind my ears, There isn't room for anything else. I will put a mask over my nose and mouth, then hold it in place with a thin, stretchy snood.

I keep a spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol in my car and spray the mask down inside and out then let it dry. This is fairly effective. I also wash my cloth masks regularly.

We had a ton of PPE training in my 40+ years. A clean mask, worn correctly goes a long way to preventing microbes from being disbursed. We had to validate this for our clean & sanitation protocols with all our equipment and processes. Validation includes before and after sanitization, then during the process to show PPE is effective.

One thing I do is make sure the fit around my nose is correct. Then I pinch it down with my glasses. If it doesn’t fog my glasses, the fit is correct at the nose. This was part of our PPE training.

I haven't used isopropyl -- I just run it under the sink and rub hand soap on it (and every few times, throw it in with the laundry).   When I wear it, I also pinch it with my glasses -- I thought I just discovered a way to keep the glasses from fogging, now I find out it's the right way to wear this?  :-)

Edit wait, I meant to ask.  Why the isopropyl?  I am not sure I have any, but I could pick some up if this is what I should be doing.

If you use ethanol, it should be 70/30 by weight with water for max efficacy. Isopropyl alcohol is what rubbing alcohol is and is usually sold at drug stores and is more readily available. It should be 90-95% for max efficacy. I just use it because it’s easy to find.

Also, I use it to clean my grips and bring the tack back. Works great.

Starting Wednesday, Michigan is going back into a semi-lock down for 3 weeks.

During these three weeks, which are between Nov. 18 and Dec. 8, the state will mandate that these operations be closed:

  • in-person learning at high schools, colleges and universities
  • theaters, stadiums and arenas
  • All who are able to work from home will be required to do just that
  • dine-in restaurants and bars
  • organized sports, except professional sports
  • bowling centers, ice skating, indoor water parks
  • bingo halls, casinos, arcades
  • group fitness classes

There will be several areas that will remain open, according to the state. Those include:

  • Hair salons, barber shops & other personal services
  • Gyms and pools for individual exercise
  • Retail stores
  • Indoor gatherings limited to two households & 10 people
  • Small outdoor gatherings limited to 25 people
  • Preschool through 8th grade
  • Childcare
  • Public transit
  • Manufacturing, construction, other work impossible to do remotely

My golf simulator practice will be put on hold.   That may be a good thing after the way I played tonight.

From the land of perpetual cloudiness.   I'm Denny

I believe Outdoor recreation is open, so if we get good weather can go golfing or to the range.

Similar here.

First, I only leave the home once or twice a week.

I have a can of spray disinfectant in my passenger seat.  I always mask when out of the car in public.  When I get back in, I spray both sides of the mask, then hang it from the sunglasses clip on the passenger side visor, along with my back-up mask.

Then I spray the disinfectant on one hand, and rub them together.

It is no more hassle than buckling and unbuckling my seat belt.

Given that we live in two areas inhabited by sizable numbers of irresponsible people, we are very cautious.  We know of many deny-ers who have gotten and spread the virus.  That helicopter ride to the nearest available ICU is probably a PITA.  & ailments have lingered for those we know who got it.

YMMV

I'm doing what you're doing man. I don't want to die by drowning in my own snot and I'd prefer not to catch the virus, show no systems and pass it on to somebody else.

Way back in March, I was listening to our national radio station. They were interviewing a local doctor who was involved with a WHO group who were investigating the then new Covid 19.

He suggested folks get their medical info from : WHO, their National health agency, their Provincial health agency or their employer. No where else.

Every day the chief medical officer for the province speaks at a 3:30 press conference , provides the stats and what we need to do to keep the virus from spreading as quickly.

In my city, we have started seeing 750 cases a day the past two weeks. Folks appear to not care and what they "think" trumps the safety of the general population.

I'm pretty sure these same folks cheat on the course.

So cases are increasing. People are wearing masks mostly. What areas are the sources of transmission? Schools? Most aren’t kids. Restaurants/bars? Workplaces?

Where are people transmitting that they weren’t in August?

This wave started in August but the increase is exponential and started to ramp slowly. It got a boost from Labor day parties, universities opening and parties, then another boost at Halloween.

If you look at the Illinois contact tracing data, the major source of spreading is indoor dining, bars and small gatherings such as birthdays, bachelor parties, and baby showers.

People are hardly "mostly wearing masks" I haven't been in one public space where I didn't have to remind someone.

Still not "wearing it incorrectly."

Then I don't know what to say about the people near where you live because I see about 80%+ of people following those guidelines in addition to "wearing them properly."

80% is not enough be a long shot

There are loop extenders that hook on both loops and behind your head so that the mask doesn't touch your ears

I'll check next time I'm at a drug store, probably tomorrow.  For this.

Wait are you on Pure grips?  I feel like mine (installed 1.5 years ago or so) are still having tack, but maybe it's because they all feel uniform to me.

I use both Pure and GP MCC+4. The alcohol wiping brings the tack back on both.

Similar to our area plus we had Canadian thanksgiving. Our health authorities indicate sources include bars (liquor and food and spit sharing), work places (we really don't know what our work mates really do privately) and informal gatherings (indoor sports leagues, any type of "after" activity, especially where booze and food is shared) which include folks outside your family units. And often involves the sharing of food utensils.

My wife and I are over 65. We are in the group.

We both have diverse groups of friends , many much older than ourselves. They continue to contact each other to try and set up live social interactions. They are just trying to be friendly.

We just don't trust them to be in our home.

My glasses fog up occasionally when wearing a mask. I spill disinfectant occasionally when washing my hands in a store or in my car. I have to wait occasionally in a supermarket isle to let someone pass by.

PITA-You bet.

I'm gonna stick with the PITA and not drown in my own snot.

I wasn't trying to strike up the whole mask debate... AGAIN. I would say the biggest contributor to the current spread is the Halloween and football parties.

Well, IMO the difference is weather. Just like flu season the contagion is easier in cooler weather. Here is VA, the mask wearing has been more rigorous but the spread seems to not be slowing down and actually accelerating like most other states and we have had a relatively mild ride through the pandemic.

I am writing this with my mask on and no-one within 10 feet of my cubicle.

My hope and bet is on vaccine and I am going to research herd immunity further...

A few quick topics…

  • I was trying to clarify "wearing" properly because it's important to give credit where due, I think: people wearing (my definition) masks "correctly" deserve credit, particularly when sometimes people don't wear them correctly or at all. If they're using them incorrectly by touching them too often, etc. then that, to me, is a different thing. For example a kid might always play with the mask and touch it more frequently, but they're still doing much more than people who have it under their noses or on their chins or in their cars when they're in the store.
  • I see most people around me wearing and even using masks correctly. I see the occasional below-the-nose thing, but otherwise, it's pretty good. I get upset (only to the point of noticing them and getting mad for five seconds, internally when I see someone not wearing a mask correctly, and back in June this occurred too often, but these days, it's pretty good. I don't see many people wearing masks incorrectly, or using them incorrectly. I also feel like people have found masks they are comfortable with at this point.
  • If it's now an aerosol like we think, how much does masking up actually help? Is the virus caught up in the fibers of the mask because it's larger than air? What's the virus density - or does it glom on to water vapor and float round like that? How much water vapor and viruses escape the sides, bottom, or top of a mask? I'm not saying that even if it's 60% reduction, that's not worth it, but particularly over the long term, how effective are masks? Do have an actual real number on this?
  • Now that we know (I think) that it's aerosolized, do the clear masks, the "face shields," really do much at all? Should everyone be using cloth masks? Are face shields barely any better than not having a mask on at all?
  • How the vaccine is distributed will be interesting.

Face shields add a layer of protection against larger droplets like from sneezes. We wore them over the N95 or similar masks when dealing with hazardous chemicals that could splash us. They shouldn’t be used alone. They don’t protect against inhalation of particles. They are like safety goggles but protect more than just the eyes. I haven’t read whether the eyes are a route for entry.

Cloth and paper masks are good if worn correctly and are correctly designed.
