Day 18 – Swing Path Gate Drill

Key #4 is “Sweetspot Path” or “Diagonal Sweetspot Path,” and it governs the path the clubhead or sweetspot takes on the downswing and, most importantly, at impact. A good path is not too inward or outward, but is almost never truly “square,” either. Today’s drills will teach you what you have to feel to deliver the clubhead along different paths.

While the vast majority of amateurs swing to the left, making that drill feel “easy” to them, there are golfers who swing too far to the right by various incorrect means. In today’s drills, pay attention to which drills feel easiest and which ones are tough to do, and why.

As with all drills, start doing them slowly and ramp up the speed as you go.

The drills for today:

  • 3:00 – Square (straight) path
  • 2:00 – Leftward path
  • 2:00 – Rightward path
  • 2:00 – Whichever you found most difficult

Video:

Can you use angled alignment sticks (in front and back) in lieu of the tennis balls for this drill?

Yeah, if you can do it properly.

Not recommended if you mean they’re sticking up.

Man, what a week. My co worker was off this week leaving me there alone and it got crazy busy!  We have been so busy since the virus has sent everyone home to work. I'll have to play some catch up on these tomorrow.

Day 18. These weren't full speed swings, and not surprisingly, it was easier for me to hit the fade/cut path than the draw one, although watching it back I might not have given myself enough room on the draw configuration with the left ping pong ball.

I need to figure out a better set up too for hitting in my backyard, if I use the ground too much I tend to slip on the board.

Are we supposed to do this from a square stance ?  I ask as I usually change my stance in order to change my path.  Recent lessons has me trying work on using my hands to hold the face open to fade it ?

Yes, you're not supposed to change anything about your setup or swing except the path, and the little changes needed to do that dynamically.

Day 18

neutral gate

near ball back

Far ball back

As Erik predicted, the first two (neutral and near-side ball back) were not difficult...I suspect because I usually come over-the-top a little. But man, I struggled with far-side ball back.  Watching my last video, I definitely compensate trying to swing out, but I suck.

this was eye-opening and I think this drill will become part of my regular practice sessions in addition to my priority piece. Hopefully, this will my nagging fade. Thank you for this drill

Day 18 drill - had only 1 tennis ball, so I located two of the grandson's plastic baseball and basketball.  They don't hurt if they glance off the shaft or head.  Started with foam practice balls but they carried over the fence, so I went with the wiffle plastic balls which pretty much died by the time they got to the fence....nothing like hitting off real grass (and yes the wife does not mind the bare spots)....

BTW @billchao like the pool noodle idea...may cut some for future use

I don’t think I did this very well, it’s hard to get feedback without hitting something.
I can see this being a very useful drill, so I’m keen to do this on grass.

So many new drills, hopefully I can remember them 😎

Pool noodles make great golf aids.

It would probably be better for your lawn if you didn’t keep hitting out of the same spot BTW.

I agree on the lawn health....With the heavy rain around mid-morning, the ground was extra soft so it tore up pretty quick.  I had planned to use my small (12 X 18) hitting mat but did not think I could get the plastic balls close enough to form an effective gate.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
