Well, Patrick Cantlay is most hyped for this week, I believe, and he is not disappointing. -8 through 11 holes right now. Always an interesting event with the AM’s joining in. Other big topic is how will Speith do after last week? Off to a reasonable start.

  • iacas changed the title to 2021 AT&T Pebble Beach

They had something on the Golf Channel last night that Jim Nantz announced from a golf cart from Ken Venturi.   There were three groups of celebrity ams that played.  Alfonso Ribeiro seems to have a good game as does Larry Fitzgerald.   It's easy to get too much of Bill Murray.

I caught a few minutes of a lead-up to the AT&T on the Golf Channel last night.  The gal anchor said Pebble Beach was expensive but she had played it once.  Said she ran out of golf balls and had to buy more at the turn.  There is no turn at Pebble... the 9th and 10th holes are about two miles from the pro shop.  That was a strange statement...

I took Cantlay in my One-n-Done league (nothing brave about taking the top ranked player, I know)

...my heart said Spieth - and I might regret it.

Go Spieth!

Maybe a scuba diver set up a stall on the beach. :-)

I get excited for this tournament every year because I like watching Pebble and its neighbors.  Then they spend too much time showing the celebrities and big wigs stink at golf and interviewing them and I stop watching.

This year should be a nice change of pace. 🙂

Sometimes watching them struggles comforts me. I mean, I don’t wish they play badly, but it somehow makes me feel better about my own shots:

I notice this is true of last week as well as today; the cameras seem to have way more trouble picking up the golf balls than in the past.  Perhaps this is Covid related?  Are they running more cameras remotely or using fewer spotters or what?  Very frequently (basically all 3 in the last group just now on 11) they switch to the camera at the landing spot and it’s just kinda panning and not seeing anything.

Anyways - nice to see Jordan playing well for a scone straight week.

Actually, Pebble does have a "turn", in the original sense of the word in fact.  If my history is correct, the original links courses usually had hole 9 at the farthest point on the course, then you "turned" to come back and play the 2nd 9 holes - kinda like Pebble. Over the years, the "turn" has come to mean the point between hole 9 and 10 regardless of where that point was - even though at most courses that's back at the clubhouse.

To your point though, yeah it would be hard to get balls at hole #10 on Pebble, unless maybe there's a snack and equipment shop there.  I do see some kind of structure there on Google Earth...

Come to think of it, when I played there several years ago there was a small snack stand up in the trees to the left of the 10th tee.  Candy bars, chips and life-saving double gin & tonics.  Perhaps they also sold golf balls.

Makes sense to me.  I’ve always assumed this is why the traditional heading on all scorecards for your front nine score column was “out” and your back score was “in.”

I’m certainly enjoying the lack of wasted camera time on ridiculous celebrities. But I don’t understand why we have to watch non-golfers talk. They keep the play going on the side during commercials, who are paying for the time, yet we have to stop play to watch some guest or announcers chat. They wanna run their ball-washers fine, but keep the cameras on the golf.

Nice broadcast this year, only professional swings, beautiful camera shots, and no focus on celebrities. I don't miss them at all. Too bad many of the top names have skipped this event and are playing elsewhere.

Is there anyone else,  who can't stand watching Berger putt, he drives me crazy with his putting routine.

    • Day 8: 3/30/25 After some poor putting yesterday I worked on some distance control drills today along with putting through 50 mm gates.
    • So I am aware that "the committee is allowed to set its own standards of player conduct in a code of conduct adopted as a local rule" (rule 1.2b) I also understand that there are some aspects that are allowed to be entered, and some that are not allowed.  My question specifically is: In which form does this code of conduct need to be available? Is it enough for someone to say "that's part of our code of conduct", or is it a requirement, that the code of conduct is in written form? Also, is there a need that the local rule points to the code of conduct in any way?   For better understanding: I'm playing competition and the next course that we play has a "no smoking policy". I don't have a problem with it, as I don't smoke anyway, but one of my team-mates does, and someone told him "You'll get disqualified if you smoke on the course".   Now I have looked at their local rules and there is no reference to a "code of conduct". I'm not sure if they even have an official "code of conduct" that states that smoking is not allowed.   I fully agree that he SHOULD respect this request from the club, but I am wondering if the club would really be allowed to DQ this player for this, if it's not properly documented in their local rules/code of conduct?  This is an official national amateur tournament, so not just something organized by a club for its members.
    • A few months back I purchased the following swing aid on Amazon ($130). It is solidly made of steel and heavy and stable in use. I use it both at the range and at home. Swing Plate Dual PRO by Jamie Brittain - Swing Analyzer Aid - Fits Standard 8mm Alignment Rod Sticks - Teaching Swing Plane Perfector - Indoor/Outdoor Golfing Practice. This winter I set a goal for myself to improve my backswing/downswing to be more consistent and on plane. I had a two way miss with my approach shots this past golf season. I have a hitting set-up in my garage, but I needed something to provide feedback while swinging the club. I came across the Swing Plate while browsing YouTube.   I set it up with the correct angles for my 8 iron. I started out with just the back rod in place, which prevents me from getting too far inside on the backswing. Started out slow and as I got comfortable increased my swing speed. Now I also came across a YouTube video on building a better backswing and getting more width in the backswing and added that to my practice. That video is here:    This video is a bit wordy since you are basically a fly on the wall as Ian gets a lesson. It took a few replays to be able to get the substance of the instruction. It was well worth the effort. Over the last two weeks I have been able to get out on the course and gauge how successful my practice has been. Overall, my consistency with approach shots has improved greatly. Incorporating the added width in my swing has also added a few yards to all my clubs.  What has your off-season training been like?
