I thought this article was interesting, although I think I disagree with the conclusion:

He played great golf for four days. He lost in an epic playoff with Patrick Cantlay. And he got heckled endlessly.

There does seem to be a lot of sympathy in the golf media towards Bryson and what's he going through right now. The heckling might be over the line. But I don't really have much sympathy for Bryson. If it bugs him, he should come out and say that. If he didn't say something stupid or obnoxious every time he opened his mouth, maybe I would feel differently.

I don’t like him either, especially after his vaccine comment, but I think the trolling needs to stop. It is getting really old. It’s childish for the fans to do it. Move on. BD can self destruct regardless of the heckling. He’s very emotional.

And I don’t think he is changing the game as much as the author suggested. He’s still the only one who uses single length clubs on tour, no? He bombs it, but others are nearly as long with more traditional set ups. He scientist persona has worn thin and is a sham IMO.

The problem I have this is that I haven't witnessed Bryson do anything scientific. I admire what he has done with his equipment, body, and swing to be the best golfer he can be. Physics, engineering, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, etc. were all around before Bryson. Single length irons, long drive equipment, speed training, modern strength/conditioning techniques were around before Bryson. Misting the face of a wedge with water and then getting some launch monitor data isn't science. Maybe it's tinkering, or trial and error data gathering, but I think real scientists might have something to say about calling it science.

I wasn't a fan of his before that (e.g., fire ants, arguing about OB with a rules official), but the vaccine comment really put me off on him. I think the trolling has gotten out of hand, and he's obviously emotionally fragile.

Me neither. He seems to put is foot in his mouth over and over again. He needs a better publicist, and maybe some expert media training. If he is going to be the face of his brand, he might want people to like him a bit more.

I don’t have much sympathy for young guy who makes millions playing golf and didn’t need to get an education to do it. It’s a posh life. Period. Heckling? Awww..poor guy. He only made a few hundred thousand for ~16hrs of ‘work’. Must be devastating.

None of that means it's appropriate behavior for a player to publicly encourage and incentivize fans to heckle another player

This x1000. Plus, they (the tour) have sports bettors to think of.  Right now people could place bets on Bryson to MC, then go around harassing him Thursday and Friday. Not saying that this is a current problem, but it is another incentive for heckling.

If people were yelling out "dork!" or "nerd alert!" every time he walked by, and it wasn't said respectfully, would that be okay? If someone gives you a nickname you hate, would you want thousands screaming it at you day to day while you're trying to do your job?

And let's be honest: it's mostly the "Stoolies" types.

I think he's handled it poorly. I think instead of saying "I like it!" initially, he should have said "It's kinda stupid, but I don't care." maybe people would have stopped shouting it. But for that to work he'd have to not actually care much, too.

Agree. If he just said that they sound stupid and it’s inappropriate, they may have stopped. But he kind of egged it on too.

We’re talking about BD, not Brooks. And in this example the idiot spectator ‘heckled’ BD after he was done playing. And let’s not forget BD said he liked it. Yelling ‘Brooksie’ is not derogatory, offensive or vulgar.  BD has done a poor job of handling this. And IMO it’s quite pansy and childish of him.

It's not said positively. It's said to heckle. To get under his skin.

Him saying he "liked" it was his lousy attempt at putting an end to it.
